For me, at least, and I believe that more people are like this than are not, it's more of an ambivalence to one and a love for the other.
I grew up with Marvel. I've been reading their books, developing my attachments to their characters, since 1991 - when I was eight years old. Marvel's characters just hold a special place in my heart, they always will.
Likewise, I just don't have that attachment to DC. I don't hate them, but I don't really care either.
Now that does mean certain things. No amount of creative ridiculousness will upset me about DC. Massive resurrections of characters who have been dead for years? Don't care. Restructuring the continuity to fit a model from the Silver Age? Don't care.
But oooh, when Marvel gets ridiculous, I get mad. Because these are characters I love they're playing willy-nilly with. House of M, Decimation, One More Brand New Moment In Time...
That gets me good and upset, but it's never out of hatred. It's because I love these characters so much that I can't stand to see them screwed around with.
I couldn't even get myself around X-Force, not because I hate the characters, but because I love them, specifically Wolfsbane, and it bothered the hell out of me to see them retread old ground with her and abuse her further in almost the exact same way she had been abused before, going just shy of shaving her bald and branding "490" into her forehead.

Conversely, I've never understood people who find reality entertaining.
I'm gonna go shakey hand motion on that.
I dig what I have, but, when I'm looking for an outlet for creativity, ideas, and expression, I'm not looking for something that I have currently or is easy to perceive. I'm looking for ideas and abstracts.

Speaking of resurrections:
Phoenix has always always always bothered me. I Mean Dios Mios Sure its in her name but come on!! Who gives a flying poo about Jean anyway
If you wish to make an apple pie from scratch, you must first invent the universe.-Carl Sagan
True enough. The exact day is the one on which you complete the triumverate of:
1) Marriage
2) Home ownership
3) Parenthood
and you realize that a divorce will likely cost you more than everything you will ever make again. This is the day upon which life ceases.
Well, crapola. This means I have been dead three times in the past 7 years. Why did you all wait this long to tell me???

The retreading of Phoenix again and again shows to me a complete lack of ideas in regards to Jean Grey. They don't know how to make her an interesting character without the Phoenix Force, so they just go back to reinterpreting the Phoenix story.
I've always been of the opinion that if they really want Jean to be Phoenix, she should join the cosmic pantheon with the likes of Silver Surfer and Nova and whatnot.
