That add is for the Marvel Vs Trading Card Game Video Game for the PC, PSP, and Nintendo DS. Which is made by Konami.
Kind of proves the point that people don't actually pay attention to the ads huh? Kind of raises the question as to whether advertising should even be done...
A simple starter deck, Spiderman Vs. Batman. (A booster set released at the same time with the same theme, maybe.) BOMB plot twists along the lines of Wrath of God and Coat of Arms. Major cleavage in the art. Massive advertising coordinated with the movies, and massive exposure displays in Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, and 7-Eleven.
That's my rhyme. Take it to the street, beeyotch.
Careful! I suggested a "Wrath of God" type card once and almost got lynched... the only thing that saved me was the fact that thug logged on with screenname #696,969 and distracted the pitchforks and torches...
Yes to all of the above! If DC and Marvel "don't care" about the game (as has been suggested), then they shouldn't have a problem with a Label vs. Label expansion.
Talk about fireworks! I'm down to see Batman rule the gaming world!
They'll never televise VS, as it is wholly uninteresting to watch a game if you aren't a player. I am a player -- I read match summaries, but I wouldn't expect anyone outside of the game to enjoy that, ever.
Furthermore, we use such a ridiculous degree of nerd-speak (even something like Chimp Faces means a lot to me but nothing to non-players) that no amount of explanation will make up the difference.
I know a lot of people will say "Well, I wouldn't pick up a game just because I saw a card in a comic book." However, applying a universal maxim just because you personally wouldn't follow the intention is a bit of a fallacy. When companies promote a separate product in a related product or service, the intention is not to get EVERY buyer to transition. Rather, the hope is that there might be a proportion of the people who have related interests that might transition.
Consider that the active comics buyers market is around 2-3 million people. If we could reach even 1 out of 100 of that group, that's 20,000 to 30,000 people. More importantly, it would actually let people out there know about the game. Aside from other TCG'ers, I don't think that I've ever met anyone who has ever heard of Vs. System. I'm not trying to argue that the game needs to be as actively promoted as Magic or WoW. But when there is absolutely no brand recognition of a product, then you are SEVERELY limiting your potential consumer base.
Exactly.
There is a big group of comic book readers out there who can be tapped due to the IP... yet we let preconceptions get in the way.
Do we assume that since they read comics, there is no need to pander to them since they obviously must already know about VS and if they aren't playing now, they probably don't want to? I tend to think that the opposite is true. They don't play because they really don't know about it.
Careful! I suggested a "Wrath of God" type card once and almost got lynched.
Well, this thread is not about competitive balance. In fact, without the big money drive... we haven't heard the cries of "borken" and "Ban it!" around here for quite a while.
I would love to play with a starter set that had huge broken effects like Wrath, or Overrun, or Counterspell. They would mess with things in the PCs, but they would make the game much more fun. It might even get more people into the game, and make it more attractive on a casual level.
A four-cost twist that exhausts all target opponent's characters? Yes please.

Agreed. Forgot this wasn't the Bamf! thread for a minute...
While a "WoG" effect would be nice, an "Armageddon" effect would be top notch! Game reset, FTW!
Sounds like a great effect for Squirrel Girl as well.
This game needs a few random token generators...
Personally, I don't want to see tokens. One-cost army dudes are good enough. Of course Hermit-like free recruits would need to be offset by Wrath-like KO abilities, but it does seem like it might attract more new players.
Actually, I was doing it for erick. He specifically requested my ideas and this twisted mind really does think that busted big board-wide abilities would make the game more enjoyable for new players. As the game is, it is a bit too deliberate and perfectly balanced for mindless fun. Those cards would be the kind of thing that I personally think would bring in more players without scrapping the existing mechanics, and that is the reason I was talking aboot them. Sorry EC, I didn't mean to offend anyone.

I believe Stu is on to something here. The game needs to have a little more mindless fun added to it. A WoG effect might be a little too much, but it's definitley in the right direction.
One of the things that has always bothered me about Vs is that games where you have 4-6 people in an every man for himself match up tend to be pretty boring. Slipping in some cards that would be fun in this scenario would be a great way to keep peoples interest. If people are having fun, they'll keep playing.
