Vs was designed using Superheroes to appeal to a relatively untapped market. Relatively is, of course, subjective, since Heroclix and OverPower and that other X-men Movie themed game bounced around. Superhero gaming makes up less than 5% of the gaming industry.
If the subject matter wasn't important then Vs COULD be about My Little Ponies and Barbies. But VS IS about the capes and such. That means that it is at least in part targeted towards comic book fans. Comic Book fans don't dress up as much as the other fandoms do. But comic book fans are suseptible to marketing just like anybody else even if they tend to get a little heavy on the over opinionated side
Vs is exciting and fast paced (most of the time; stall hurts the game's ability to be market as fast paced) and features the most popular names in comics.
Vs is too hard to get good at the competitive level for the average player. But it is a ton of fun sitting around and playing with friends that are all playing their favorite teams or characters and not just the newest broken combo.
But people don;t get to play VS at home like that as much as they could because the game isn't marketed to it's best target audience, not in a way that makes them WANT to buy product. Whyich ties back around to the Starter deck issue. The ability to buy a Legends deck pre-con that would let a super casual player play with his favorite characters and not have to buy 10 boxes to build a deck could go a long way toward making the world LOVE vs like most of us do.
UDE could have made the game about athletes and probably gotten a fairly decent number of players if they'd still had the Million Dollar PC behind it. Shaq and Kobe on Enemy of My Enemy? Autographed Kevin Garnett 4 drops in random packs? Just because it became based on comic book characters, doesn't mean that it had to be based on comic book characters to work.

If Psylocke and Rogue were helping to demo VS at San Diego, I bet the number of games demoed would at least double from past years.
I would take this bet 100 times out of 100, for any kind of stakes.
Yes, if Psylocke and Rouge did demo the games, more people would show up, but the issue is whether or not they would be quality demos that would get people interested in the game for longer than 20 minutes.
1. UDE or UpperDeck did put out a sports card game (just before I got mine together bastards, a little more time a few more resources oh well). I understand it did not do that well but it had no $1million pro circuit. Better executed this looked like a gold mine.
2. If you believe it will attract people to the demo, to the booth, to the game, then you believe it would be a success. Sales is about numbers, most folks hang up on cold callers, but the ones that don't pay millions of peoples saleries, one thing they teach these guys is its all in the numbers, if you ring enough lines, or bang on enough doors you will make sales. Admittedly vs is different from a vacuum cleaner but the fact remains. Marketting is about branding, name recognition, and exposure. As we discussed about starters if you don't see a product you won't buy it no matter how good it is.
You arrive at Gencon for your first or umpteenth time. While exploring the vendors floor you see a small group of people chattering loudly and excitedly and see lots of cameras flashing. The crowd seems a little daunting, but your curiosity begs you to come closer and investigate. Upon closer inspection, you see 2-3 incredible comic book icons talking to onlookers and posing for pictures and giving out FREE starters to people that take the demo for this card game. Free combined with great looking costumes and the promise of nothing more than a 5 minute investment of your time means you stopping and checking it out for a few moments. The hourly drawings for additional prizes also hold your attention. And then you see the players sitting around and playing this game, some playing in a multi-player game, others playing head to head and others still playing with what appears to be brand new packs, building their own decks out of whatever the cards in their handful of packs are. You have now seen that this game offers many different fun ways to be played, and you didn't even realize that you had stopped looking at Psylockes ### every time she turned around to face someone else. You actually were interested in learning a little more about this game.
Substitute that EXACT kind of scenario for Comicon and consider the possibilities.
Marketing to the people that will be interested is the key. Not marketing at all is a mistake that will lead to ruin.
Gee isn't that kinda what is happening to VS, the no marketing thing. (Well, not none, but very little).... Why don't they cross advertise VS on Yugioh's website or WOW's like they do for them on VS?

because they cant anger their partners at Konami and Blizzard.
thats the big reason Worlds is at origins and not Gen Con, because of blizzard.
I think that, rather than wondering about what extras VS can offer to get players into the game, UDE should just fix up what we have in place right now. When the basics are already going well, VS can afford to dream of hot chicks doing demos. But not while VS is still having problems with distribution.
