Nightmare was laughing as they fought for their lives, then suddenly it melted away and there was only darkness.

Stephen fumbled to turn on the lamp, his hands slippery with sweat. He lay gasping for a moment on his bed, gathering his wits. It had all been a dream then. Of course when it was Nightmare, dreams were more solid than reality. Stephen went to the balcony for some night air, and received a shock. Writing was burning on his small lawn.

YOU ARE TO BE JUDGED. Next to the writing was an odd shape, with a fiery X mark in it.

“So this is definitely the spot it indicated?” asked patsy for the hundredth time.

“Yes, quite sure,” replied Stephen Strange. The flaming shape matched Spain perfectly when I checked it in the Atlas, this precise region of Spain to be exact. Since the locale is mostly hills and scrub land, I deduce that whatever we are here to find is there.” Stephen pointed out to the ruins of an old tower, standing in the middle of nowhere.

“The tower is not empty. Whoever is in their masks their thoughts well.”

“I sense them too Heather. Be ready.”

As they approached they saw a man and a woman sitting on a rock, eating a picnic and laughing. The man was dressed in moldy finery that appeared hundreds of years out of fashion, and a strange headpiece. The woman was dressed in a revealing dress.

“Ah at last you arrive. Esteban and I were growing quite bored with waiting,” laughed the woman, to the man’s amusement.

“What is the meaning of dragging me out here?” demanded Doctor Strange.

The woman waved away his question like it was of no concern. “The where is unimportant. I merely chose this spot so that I could awaken poor Esteban here. I planned to destroy you myself, but since you insisted on moving in an ugly gang nowadays I figured that it was only fair. Speaking of fair, be a dear and even the playing field would you Esteban?”

The man smiled and performed a flowery bow. Then he cast liquid from a vial upon an old, gnarled tree that grew by the ruins. There was a groaning noise, like an old man waking, and the tree pulled itself up out of the ground. Moving forward on its roots, it swung its branches menacingly.

“Wait,” shouted Stephen, “I’ve never even met you. What is the test I am meant to take?”

“Why the test to show you’re unworthy of the title Sorcerer Supreme of course,” laughed the woman. “The test where losing means that you die!”

I was ready for a fight! Why did you do that?

That woman was Umar, the sister of Dormammu, a very powerful foe of mine. We would be slaughtered in a skirmish. We need a chance to prepare.

Strange is right, our brick fighter is still recruperating from the might of the Absorbing man and Loki*, we don't want to rush into things so recklessly. I shall try to channel into their minds, perhaps we can suggest the fight out of them.

Hey, I came for a fight, this is one of the first fights I've been in since those heralds invaded Steven's home.**

Worry not, Hellcat, Esteban Diablo knows many mind tricks, and Umar is almost as powerful as her brother. I doubt that giant tree monster is capable of thought other than to attack us. Mind assaults will prove to be futile, these villains wish a fight, and a battle they will have-and lose.

Lady Umar glanced at her 'assistant' and said "lets begin the testing" and she uttered an incantation that took her behind one of the temple outbuildings she peeked around and saw the defenders arraying themselves to the side of the primary building....she took stock....Dr Strange, a worthy adversary in the arcane arts....Moondragon, a mind witch trained by the Titans.....and Hellcat, a human trained by the Cat-People. a powerful force indeed.

she glanced back to see the large tree, a willow by the look of it, making its way through the water effortlessly, until it stood silent beside her.

Diablo twirled his moustache and began moving his spindly legs...walking over to stand a few feet from The Lady Umar...and looked over at the entourage faceing them...and tossed a small bag with some dust in it that rose in the air around the would be sorcerer....Strange coughed and gagged...

that should slow down his spell slinging thought the alchemist...

Strange, are you all right?

I am . . . fine . . . merely annoyed. However, I cannot cast any eldritch blasts as long as he is able to sling that dust!

Let me at him! I can handle that wimp!
