Last year Gargantua and FlyingIcarus paired up 22 of Marvel and DC's best teams to determine the best 300 point team in the game. Now, after Mutant Mayhem and Legacy releases we're decided to try it again---for 500 points teams. And with round 1 under our belt, we now have Fantastic Forces, Icons and the beginnings of Armor Wars to choose from as well

Rules are simple:

***All eligible figures in a team must have the team logo on the base (ex. no Flash for JSA)
***Only the highest or lowest point figure can use the ta (depending on the ta). This is so the game is less about the ta, more about the team.
***We've chosen not to use feat or battlefield condition cards
***Total points of each team must range between 490-505

During Round 1, twelve teams were eliminated, and twelve moved on: Avengers, Defenders, Fantastic Four, JLA, Kingdom Come, Legion of Superheroes, Minons of Doom, Spider-Man Allies, Superman Enemies, Ultimate X-Men, Ultimates and X-Men. The six winners, and the two losing teams with the highest KO points will move on to the Quarterfinals.

Game 1: Avengers vs Ultimate X-Men

After a LOT of internal debate and flip-flopping (Geez there are a lot of Avengers) I've made my choices. Of course the urge to play some brand-spankin'-new figures was hard to fight, so both the new Iron Man and the new Cap made the final cut. Should be interesting to see what they can do.

"The X-Men have gone rogue?" Captain America asked, unable to believe it.

"Ah, can't say I ever completely trusted them. Always something fishy about 'em." Hawkeye said.

"It wouldn't be the fact that they're mutants," Northstar prompted him, the threat implicit in his voice.

"Hey, hey, chill out, Northstar," Hawkeye defended himself. "That's got nothing to do with it. But they've always kinda kept to themselves, and then there's way the bad guys keep showing up on their roster."

"And bad guys never reform, right?" Songbird needled him.

"You'd better quit before you dig yourself in so deep you can't climb back out again, Hawk," Iron Man suggested. "I remember having to fight a certain villain with a bow and arrow modus operandi some time back."

"Well, yeah, but I mean..." Hawkeye stumbled.

"Never mind," Captain America interrupted, turning the conversation back to business. "T'Challa, what else can you tell us."

"There's something odd about them," the Black Panther said. "They seem to be some slightly skewed, alternate X-Men."

"Well, skewed or not, the Avengers stand ready to take them down, right guys?" the Black Knight asked.

"If that's what it takes, then yes," Captain America said grimly. "Avengers Assemble!"

Northstar and Songbird?. Not really Avengers in my book....I definitely got to get them back on my side next time.

My team of Ultimate X-Men (it's cool to get so many of them off the list so I can not use them in my regular X-Men game...maybe).

"They seem somehow...familiar," Marvel Girl says after gleaning information on the Avengers telepathically.

"Indeed," Professor Xavier confirms, "Some of them are similar to the Ultimates. Another Captain America. Iron Man...".

"Great copycats. They don't smell like much ta me," groans Wolverine.

"Their minds are most intriguing. They are not the same men they seem to be ...also they see us as similar to some they know as well."

"What could be the cause of such a thing?" ponders Colossus.

"It doesn't matter," says Cyclops grabbing his visor, "They're coming in for us. Guess our course is clear, X-Men."

Initiative is 3. No wasted effort there.

I know it's not really a purist team, but for these games, anyone with the TA is valid, and if we're trying to see which one's best, it behooves me to choose the best figures with the TA.

We left off with OAP2 last round so picking it up from there, we should be using Heroix 1 this game. With initiative, it's your choice of the extra HO or first choice for side.

And if we're going to start game 2, I'll take your #5. They'll be goin gup against the Ultimates. (Would have preferred to spread out the Avengers and Ultimates games a bit, but what can you do? Wouldn't it be funny if I got your X-Men team?)

Kinda wanted them against Kingdom Come cause I had an idea. I'll post a link to the new game and figure my characters, not totally sure of my direction but I want to NOT duplicate the Ultimate X-Men. Shame is I'd like to see Avengers, Ultimates AND X-Men make the cut.

Despite his complaining Wolverine is first to start the race.

Xavier smiles proudly at their youthful enthusiasm.

"Their version of Xavier is on the bridge," Iron Man said, landing from a quick reconnaissance flight. "The others are approaching from the left side."

"Shouldn't we take out baldy while he's all alone?" Hawkeye asked.

"I don't like it," the Black Knight said. "It sounds suspicious. Why would they put their leader all alone and vulnerable up there?"

"Because if he's anything like this world's Xavier, he's not vulnerable at all," Captain America explained. "He's an extremely powerful telepath. We should advance, yes, but not do anything foolhardy."

"In the meantime, I may have a way of dealing with his mental powers," the Black Panther said. "If one of you can get me up there."

"Mount up," the Black Knight offered.

"All right Avengers," Captain America said, "let's move out!"

Professox X will try to incapacitate Black Knight (not totally hidden behind T'cHalla). Needs 5 with hindering, rolls 7.2 tokens to Knight, 1 click.

"Amazing..."notes Charles Xavier to himself, "I sensed both Black Knight and Panther within 30 yards of me. The Panther has eluded my telepathic probes...he seems to have simply disappeared. No matter... the Black Knight is another matter altogether."

Suddenly Dane Whitman feels a mental tug. "Stay away, T'Challa...it must be the fake Professor in my head." The Knight hits himself without warning, his blade piercing his leg.

T'Challa slips by and releases the mind dampening device he has in his hand. The Professor is quickly made to withdraw before much damage is done.

I take a turn to clear before the massacre begins.
