“Welcome to Legion World!” As Tenzil Kem spread his arms wide, Jazmin Cullen took in the splendor of her dreams coming true. The towering building, plastered prominently on so many holofeeds across the galaxy, was even bigger in-person. All around the base of the building, kids her age had stood around, just glad to be together and close enough to touch the headquarters of the Legion. It was like their Mecca, their pilgrimage to the homeland, where they wouldn’t be ignored, wouldn’t be discriminated against, wouldn’t be marginalized or brainwashed or taken for granted just because of their age. They were free, here. Free of the prosecution of their parents, the cruelty of the Science Police, the harsh restrictions the worlds’ governments put on underagers – they could just be themselves, whoever they wanted that to be.

Of course, they were no more free here than they were at home, technically. The laws of the United Planets still applied to the ground the Legion World Tower sat on. But for whatever reason, it didn’t seem to matter. When you were here, you were free. For Kid Quantum, it was so much more. She had discovered her powers quite by accident; a family meeting to discuss her ‘strange ideas’ had gone terribly wrong. They wanted her to start taking normalizer meds, and she didn’t, but she didn’t have a choice. The med-dispenser felt so heavy in her hand, like the weight of her future and her freedom of thought were all wrapped in her decision at that moment. Should she do as she was told, she would lose herself completely. But that was the only thing she could do. She had no choice.

It was sometime around then that the dispenser’s mass multiplied by a factor of 50 and plunged through the floor. It broke through 60 floors and then kept going dozens of feet into the ground. She was so stunned she could hardly move. Then things changed. She looked for the Legion, but they found her first. She was welcomed in and rechristened, her old name given up freely and her true name taken. Jazmin Cullen became Kid Quantum, and she was a Legionnaire. She was home.

The inside of Legion World was even more amazing than the outside. The Legion had kept all outsiders from getting any glimpses of the inside. Tenzil led her on a tour of the vast facility, from the massive entry foyer, with the bustling technicians and personnel, to the observation deck at the top floor of the tower. She looked out the viewpanes and saw the grand vistas before her, and her heart soared.

“I can’t believe I’m here,” she sighed, contented.

“Yeah, I hear that a lot,” Tenzil chuckled. “You’ll get used to it. Quantum stasis field, right?”

“Yeah, I guess that’s what they call it.”

“Izzat just time/space or mass, too?”

“I can alter mass a little, but it’s easier to make things lighter than heavy.”

“Not bad. I’m still swinging in the minors, myself – for some reason they don’t think the ability to eat and digest any and all forms of matter counts as a viable ‘field power.’ I mean, how easy do they think it is to bite into steel, chew it and swallow it?”

“What would they call you?” Kid Quantum asked with a light laugh. “Matter-Eater Lad?”

“And why not? Oh, hey! Check this out.” Tenzil waved her over to his side of the observatory and she looked out to where he pointed. “Looks like you’re gonna get a show.”

Out in the distance, she could see a Science Police fleet closing in on Legion World’s outer perimeter. Suddenly, the ships shuddered and dropped slowly to the ground, their thrusters crushed like so much alumifoil. Tenzil tapped a translucent keypad that appeared in front of him and the viewpane switched to ‘zoom’ mode. She squeeled with delight when she saw a close-up of the battle, then blushed madly when she realized how stupidly girly she was acting. Tenzil smirked a bit, but just laughed sweetly.

“It’s okay, Kid Q – I still get giddy sometimes, too.”

At the scene of the battle, SP troopers lowered in - some on jump-jets, some on foot from the downed ships – and started moving forward. That was when Cosmic Boy, Live Wire, Saturn Girl and Wildfire appeared. Cosmic Boy had put the ships down with his magnetic powers, and Saturn Girl was suppressing the crowd’s hysteria and fear so that they would calmly clear out space.

“Alright, guys,” Live Wire said. He could even fly with a cocky swagger. “We know you SP geezers like to come in every month or so to try and rough us up, but could we just once put it off a while? I mean, I’m getting tired of whipping you so easy. It’s seriously embarrassing for you.”

“Shut it, kid,” the lead SP Officer said. “We’ve heard reports of terrorist activities involving your members, and the Science Police are here to shut you down!”

“If you insist on going through with this sad act of puffed-up grandstanding, you will be beaten,” Cosmic Boy said. “Turn around now, or look like fools, but we will not let you near these people.”

“Can’t do that, boy,” the Officer said, raising his gun.

“Looks like we have a problem, then...”

"Yes we do, " said Live Wire as lightning crackled between his fists.

"Garth! You're not helping any!" said Saturn Girl.

"Let's cut the talking already and just start blasting at them! They're the ones attacking us!" yelled Wildfire.

Wildfire was about to fly towards when he stopped suddenly.

"What the ??"

"Hold on there Drake", says Cosmic Boy as he magnetically held back Wildfire. "We have to move as a team. Let's move out people! Garth try to head over and get into a good position."

"No problem, boss man," said Live Wire as he flew off from the group.

If i had been or were more familiar with their new incarnation, i might've chosen them as my team. I'll be watching their exploits with great interest!

Thanks Mike. I could always use a cheering section. Actually I'm not all that familiar with the new Legion either. So this team's a little mix I guess of what I know of the new and a little of the old one before Zero Hour.
