Welcome to HeroClix A to Z figure reviews for the DC - Giants!
Since this special collectors’ set has started arriving in peoples’ mailboxes, it’s time to pull out the reviews.
These will go up all week, with double reviews Thursday and Friday to finish out the 7 of them.
Giganta
In this article I’ll review the figure’s stats, powers, and point cost and discuss its overall playability.
Some figures are good for tournament play, some just for fun games at home, and some not at all. Where does this one fall?
These reviews are done for Open Format, unrestricted games of pretty much any point size. Whatever works best for the figure in question. Basically the sky’s the limit!

DC Giants review: Giganta
(#005) 108 – Injustice League – 0 /
Now that’s a lotta woman!
Like many other Giants, Giganta starts off as a standard brick with Charge & Super Strength, plus Invulnerability.
Her stats are solid to start; 10 movement for a nice 5 square charge, and her AV is also pretty good at 10, although her damage starts at 3 and goes up to 4 on her second click. However, you shouldn’t be in too much of a hurry to push her onto that click because she’ll lose her 1 click of Invulnerability, defense value drops to 16, and she does only have 2 clicks of Charge.
Past her first few clicks though, Giganta goes from typical ‘brick’ to support piece thanks to 3 clicks of Perplex followed by 3 of Outwit. Her damage drops to 2 for nearly the rest of her dial, and she loses Super Strength pretty fast as well, so past the top of her dial she pretty much switches from offense to support. This is not a bad thing, since she has 6 clicks of support powers, and as a Giant she also has unobstructed line of sight, so she can Perplex her teammates and Outwit her enemies easily.
Giganta’s other point of note is her defense. She may not be heavy on offense, but she’s got the defense covered – her defensive stat holds steady at 16 for nearly her entire dial, and even bumps back up to 17 on click #6 when she gets Willpower.
Willpower is also a decent power for her, since her defense number is solid, Willpower allows her to act continuously without pushing and giving up clicks late in the dial when she’s close to KO. On the flip side, it means she has no damage reducers, so if an opponent can hit her 17 defense, they’ll really hurt her. But presumably a 17 defense later in the game will be difficult to hit.
The biggest thing to look out for on Giganta’s dial though is her last two clicks with Earthbound! What this means for the giantess is that she’s no longer a giant! While Earthbound tends to be a liability on many figures, here it presents a number of advantages. For starters, if she’s not a giant any more then opponents won’t automatically have an unobstructed line of sight to finish her off! It also means that she can be carried and TKed! So rescue her with a flier and get her out of harm’s way!
Much like Battle Fury, Earthbound is constantly overlooked and forgotten (how many times have you or an opponent carried or made a ranged attack with a fig that had Battle Fury, and not realized it until 3 turns later!?) This will be important defensively as mentioned above so she’s not a giant target, but also offensively so you don’t use Outwit unobstructed when she is in fact just small.
Relevant Battlefield and Feat cards:
BFC’s –
As with several other Giants, Darkness/Deep Shadows and Poor Teamwork may work against your opponent without hurting her. Avoid White Noise obviously, since she has so many support powers of her own.
Feat Cards –
First and foremost, The Society feat is a must! Her Injustice League team ability is worthless in its original form, but The Society alternate TA card gives her a 50/50 chance of not being Outwitted! Definitely a huge plus for a Giant fig.
Because Giganta has the prerequisite for Brilliant Tactician, many will immediately start looking at ways to make that card work for her.
Just looking at her alone, it seems like it could be a good idea. She has 3 clicks of Perplex, enough that she’s sure to get to use it. Her Giant stature gives her LOS to most of the field so she’ll be able to easily see her whole team.
Looking at the bigger picture though, the Injustice League just isn’t a great team to build around. There are very few members, and fewer still power pieces. (Even the set that introduced the Alt TA card didn’t include any IL members!) So while you could make Brilliant Tactician technically work, it won’t pan out so well in actual execution.
Protected is also a good card for her. If you can, save it for when she gets on her Willpower clicks and you can play it without consequence (and keep her from getting KOed when she’s on her more vulnerable clicks.)
Themes –
As well known as she is, Giganta actually hasn’t gotten around much. She’s been aligned a bit with The Society in Infinite Crisis, but not enough to say who her regular partners in crime might be.
The more popular option will undoubtedly be to re-create the Legion of Doom (!) from the Super Friends cartoon. Now that Giganta has been made, the last we’re missing is Toy-man.
A theme team around the Legion of Doom could very well work. Sinestro is a strong figure, Joker and Lex Luthor have good versions out there, and Grundy, Bizarro, Riddler, and Black Manta have all been made as well.
A Legion of Doom team was the first thing I ran when I got my Giants set. I had the following set up in front of me:
Giganta, Capt. Cold, Scarecrow, Luthor, Grodd, Black Manta & Riddler.
It really made me smile and the team was alot of fun to play with the new team ability. I won the game too and Black Manta even got to Incapacitate Mary Marvel. Good times.
You can't shake the devil's hand and say you're only kidding.
In the event where you DO try to run an all-Society team and use Brilliant Tactician, you should also probably use ICwO (or In Contact with Calculator) to give her Perplex to start.
Personally, I think she's one of the better Giants for her cost. She's going to face some competition from Colossal Boy, but she's a decent brick with good team support abilities.

Just quickly noting that Joker wasn't a member of the Legion of Doom.
I have to give Kaitouace points for hitting the nail on the head.

So here I go adding to Kaitouace's sig again, but he hit the nail on the head. FOOM is very playable.
I will probably try to use her, simply to see if I can try a "get away" while she isn't a giant...I've no love for the "Legion of Doom" so I'll be a bit more min-maxish with her.
You could also look at a Justice League Unlimited team, since we are talking cartoon themes, although the JLU Giganta really seems to just be a brick, not a brilliant scientist.

can't she use brilliant tactician on wildcards copying her team ability? or is that backwards and wildcard pieces can use brilliant tactician byswitching team abilities?

Boy am I glad they finally made her, and they did a great job. She and Atom Smasher are the best of the set, though I like Giganta better. Being raised on the old Superfriends cartoon how could I do otherwise?

Oracle is not Perplex. You can only adjust your own stats, not your teammates.
Still, barely dressed giant women are cool.

My favorite of the set. Reasonable cost. Good defense and Alt TA to reduce the "target" problem that all giants face. Movethrough fixes part of the adjacency rules drawback. A couple of solid brick clicks followed by a great support dial for the last six clicks.

Last saturday, I played Giganta, Bizarro, Brainiac w/ NB, Cpt Cold, Battlesuit Lex, and Sinestro LE. Brainiac helps in making the team competitive, very fun to play. Potentially even more fun to lose, because then you have the LoD members start yelling at each other.
