If Heroclix Was Made In The 1990's................
During a decade known for its grittiness, copycat characters and where the mutant explosion really began, what characters do you think would have been made by now if Heroclix was produced in the 1990's????
Due to the relative success/feedback of my previous "What If Heroclix Was Made In The 1980's thread" I thought I'd apply the same question to the following decade and see what people had to say.
The 90's were a wild and important time for comics with an ever evolving market that went through A LOT of changes. Three major trends during the 90's stick out in my mind such as:
1) Its hard hitting, more mature/gritty beat as Marvel sent Piunisher "Over The Edge" on a Suicide Run eventually leading into the Midnight Sons family of titles while D.C. introduced Vertigo, the Mature Readers only line.
2) Both Marvel & D.C. thought that they could cash in on the success of their top money making characters by producing "copycat" versions of them all with the idea that fans would buy both, doubling their profit. Marvel started this trend. Captain America got the U.S.Agent, Iron Man got War Machine, Thor got Thunderstrike, & Spider-Man got Scarlet Spider. D.C. followed suit giving us Az-Bats, Artemis, Kyle Rayner and 4 different Supermen. For a while it seemed that everyone had a second rate version of themselves running around.
3) Mutant Mania hit its peak in the 90's with at one point the X-family of titles having 12 different monthly comicbooks alone being produced: X-Men, Uncanny X-Men, X-Factor, Excalibur, X-Force, Generation X, Wolverine, Cable, X-Man, Deadpool, Maverick, & QuickSilver.
If I had to chose one Hero & one Villian from both Marvel and D.C. that was really popular during the 1990's and surely would have had a Heroclix version by now if the game was produced during that decade I would have to choose:
Marvel
1. Jubilee (Sidekick extrordinare, she was to Wolverine what Robin was to Batman. In fact, I challenge anyone to come up with a more widely knowned/marketed/merchandised character that has not been made into Heroclix. Even people that don't read comics know who she is....)
2. Onslaught (1996 was the year of the onslaught, although maybe with this November's 10 year anniversary Heroes Reborn vs Onslaught mini series we may see him yet.....)
D.C.
1. Animal Man (had his own long running title, was a JLE member and one of my personal favorites....)
2. Anarky (or any O'neil/Breyfogle villian for that matter.........)
Please post your own nominees for favorite 1990's characters that would have been made into Heroclix already had the game been pruduced back then.
My personal favorite 90's Marvel character is DARKHAWK! Along with the reast of the New Warriors would have been made. Don't forget the Guarians of the Galaxy! Man I want those figs! On the DC side I think that the 4 Superman replacements would have been finished. (we have Superboy and Steel) and a Sentinel sized Onslaught would be cool.
I think the biggest change would be in indyclix......some people back in those dark times didn't realise that Liefield was rubbish and image was churning our pumped up dark superheroes with claws and guns by the bucketful.
I suspect Indyclix would have got more than one expansion, and there may even have been an "Imageclix" set. Some of the characters, like savage dragon may still manage to get made.
The 90s were also the time when Malibu launched the Ultraverse, Dark Horse had a go at it's own universe, and valiant comics somehow came to be worth a small fortune for a while. I suspect we would have got valiant comics characters in indyclix, characters like Magnus robot fighter and Solar were pretty big for a while, turok is still big enough to spawn a lot of computer games.
....now what i would have wanted is ultraverse characters in clix.....I enjoyed that universe until Marvel bought it and ignored it....I suspect I wouldn't have got them though.
...the liefield effect would have almost guaranteed we'd have got all of x-force by now, and i'm sure we'd have got Azbats as a MAJOR story of the time.
...we'd likely have less holes in our selection of available mutants (Jubilee, Sunspot, Pete Wisdom, Strong Guy, Richter, Feral, Shatterstar, and Stryfe all come to mind as much more likely to exist already)
...there'd most definitely have been a "Onslaught/Heroes Reborn" themed set, as well as AoA and Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade. On the DC side of things, I could see a Zero Hour themed set...
......we'd have clix versions of all four of the "Reign of the Supermen" Superman stand-ins, rather than just the two that stuck around. There'd also likely have been a Guy Gardener and a Lobo released by now...
(And now to be a little less serious)
...we'd have such things as "variant figures" and special "foil/chrome paint" figs randomly inserted in boosters.
...half of the mutant figs and every fig in the HR-themed set would have his/her/its ankles snap in the middle of use.
...Spider-Man and Wolverine would be in every Marvel set. Oh...wait...

Omega Red, Darkhawk, Sleepwalker, Maverick, Maggot, Celia Reyes, Definitely Jubilee and most of the rest of GenX and X-Force, Strong Guy, and probably a CapWolf variant of some sort.
Things you would find:
- Lots of trench coats of various colors,
- Viking Spawn
- pouches that presumably hold ammunition and equipment (but in reality are carrying snacks)
- Chromium and variant edition figures (oh wait, we got that with Surfer)
- Ninja Spawn
- Sonar-etched forehead wrinkles
- Pickle-thighs (courtesy of Liefeld)
- Lumberjack Spawn
- All figures would be pogs
- Batman in a wheelchair
- Undeclared Major roommate Spawn on the 8 year plan
- Superman with a mullet
- A DC Bloodlines set (shudder)
- Sobbing-in-a-corner-with-bottle-of-Jack Spawn
- Pitt, Wetworks, and Battle Chasers (but only promotional figures would be released and those wouldn't have dials while the sets were delayed indefinitely, most likely due to the advent of Playstation)
-A VALIANT line of Indyclix, though more abundant and even less useful then Indyclix, polluting bargain bins everywhere (hand-gun ammunition is included, they can't make you killyourself for buying them, but they can give you the option)
- Pickle-thighs Liefield's Revenge Spawn
- Home Shopping Network exclusives
- 6 versions of Spider-man in every set (including DC and Indyclix sets)
- Jon-bennet Ramsey Murderer Spawn
- Batman, with nipples, in a wheelchair
- Warriors of Plasm.... beotches
Though on a positive note, I could possibly get my Dog Welder clix and Hitman collector set, and possibly a Maxx collector set
