I heard DC was a little late the last couple of weeks so I'll start the reviews and everyone can pile on with the stuff I didn't get.
Annihilation #2 - Rated 8 - Things look really, really grim for the home team. Phyla and Moondragon get ambushed by Thanos and he beats down Ms. Mar-Vell and kidnaps Moondragon (sans her ear which he sends to Drax mafia-style). Galactus is strapped in a harness in a lab along with Norrin. Ravenous leads a death squad in an ambush of the recovering and regrouping forces lead by Nova. The issue ends with Ronan, Stardust, Red Shift, Nova, Gamora, SS GF, and Starlord staring down an army of annihilus' minions. Super-Skrull's body enters the fray as Paradoxia or whoever his girlfriend was hauls him there. A few weak points:
1 - The art looks badly rushed in spots. Not 52 bad but bad nonetheless.
2 - They claim that they have been given some great teleportation technology by Thanos and it's used as a bit of a plot crutch throughout the issue.
Captain America #21 - Rated 9 - Wow more sweetness from Brubaker. The Sleeper is running rampant through London threatening to destroy the Kronas corp building. Cap and Bucky team up to stop the thing. Of course Bucky bolts once the dust settles. Lutkin and the Red Skulls awesome internal dialog continues and it soon becomes clear that the Skulls plans far out reach Lutkin's plans. Spitfire and Union Jack abuse Master Man some more ... and when the dust settles we see the Winter Soldier (minus an arm) on the phone with who else ... Nick Fury.
Ultimate X-Men #74 - Rated 4 - What a lame ending to the Magician arc. He basically makes them all believe they beat him, and has a self revelation that he is too sexy for his powers and for contact and decides to go to Antarctica. WTF?!?!?!?!?!!!?!??? A complete pile and a perfect point for me to ditch this dying book.
Wolverine: Origins #6 - Rated 6 - The art is just not Wolverine. The plot is kind of a little all-star parade through Wolverines rogues gallery and seems forced. Next up is ... Omega Red. Who doesn't appear until the last panel ... Wolverine smells carbadinium on the boat he ends up on, then decides to track down Maverick, hijacks a trucker for a ride to NY, ends up in some mutant hide out where he finds Maverick and ... ugh ... Jubilee ...then Omega Red jumps through the wall like the frickin' Kool-Aid guy.
Thunderbolts #106 - Rated NULL - Because I forget to grab it.
The Civil Wars files thing looked like filler trash.
Anyone get Hulk ? Ms. Marvel ? New X-Men ? New Excalibur (is anyone reading that thing ?)
New Xmen 30......Forge downloads Nimrod into a new sentienel body. This Sentienel is supposed to protect mutants from Sentienels. New Xmen attack the Sentienel and release Nimrod's programming in the process.
New Excalibur 11......I love this book.....The team goes back in time to help Camelot. There is a great scene where Wisdom pulls rank and the team just laughs at him. After saving Merlin they go back to Camelot for a feast. We learn the Juggy hates that he isn't as powerful as he used to be. And Nocturne has a crush on him.
Awesome! I'm looking forward to picking up Cap tomorrow. I'm also picking up Hulk and Thunderbolts, and will put those up if no one else does in the interim
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"
Man o' man! The teleporting Mysterio (from Smith's Spidey/Black Cat series) has the haunted house set up in the school and the former Mysterio II shows up to take care of this "impostor" for the police. Then a demonic looking Mysterio shows up and talks to the teleporter Mysterio. The last page reveal is worth the price of admission. It's what you'd expect from a Mysterio-centric art. A big "is it real or what?" moment. Besides that, the dialogue is top notch and the art from Nauck is good for my tastes. Probably the best title out there for Spidey right now.
Annihilation #2: Rated 9 What Ned Leeds said! I'm not to terribly big on art so I let most slide as long as it's passable to me. The story was top notch and moved everything along. Loved it! Can't wait to have this story resolved and the spinoffs hit already!
Hulk was pretty great. Lots of violence and some history into the Red Emperor's Shadow Guard. Not much gets resolved though.
Annihilation continues to impress. Can't wait for #3!
"Come on Hulk! Where's the old boasting? The battle cries? Why aren't you bellowing about how you're 'the strongest one there is'? Could it be because... you know it's not true?"
"No. Because it's just too obvious."
-Juggernaut to Hulk
Thunderbolts continues to just rule all. I can't believe I'm saying this, but I was actually moved by Zemo's speech before they went on the attack. Yes, Baron Helmut ####### Zemo finally has me convinced that he is a hero. That's Thunderbolts, man.
Watch: Nicienza will turn it around on me next month. This is Marvel's best book for the last 10 years.
Excalibur #11 - Rated 8 - A fun little tale so far. REminds me of classic X-Men. The team goes back to the days of King Arthur and try to prepare Camelot etc for an oncoming dragon attack. Why are all the good X-tales not core X-titles? Well aside from Astonishing.
Ms. Marvel #7 - Rated 7 - Carol convinces Arana so sign up and kind of takes her uner her wing. She is then sent to retrive Aracne who is abbout to flee to Canada. The attempt fails and Aracne escapes but her friend is arrested. Uh oh! Really kind of an average book. Civil War needs to get out of other books cause I want adventure!
Ultimate X-Men #74 - Rated 7 - So the tame fights Magician. Wolvie apparntly kills him and things just kind of fix themselves as if he never existed. We then later find out that he staged the whole fight so the X-Men would think he was dead so he can go live away from everyone in peace cause he can't control his powers... k. Kind of a weak ending in my opinion but a fun read none the less.
Wolverine Origins #6 - Rated 5 - Blargh on the art! And I only picked this up cause of Jubes. I've been waiting for Logan to chat with his former sidekick after she lost her powers. Though I don't like that she's turned all political or something. I like old Jubes. But I guess everyone has to grow up sometimes.

Damn it ... I can't believe I forgot to grab this. Now I must go back to the CBS today before it sells out. And my god damn foot is broken ... all for Helmut ... Wonder if we'll ever see a new Zemo Heroclix, with the moonstones

I would give this a 7 and here's why: I'm loving this story, but not so much the new art team. Some of it is good (such as the "reveal" at the end) but a lot of it is just awkward (look at Mysterio when he's leaving the police and first entering the school or Spider-Man during the sequence with the principal). The muscles and joints don't quite line up right and just create a grating to my eyes that pulls me away from the story.
However, glad they are keeping 'Ringo on the cover duties at least for the time being, just wish he could have stayed on the book full-time.
New X-Men 30- The whole interrogation scene made this book worth it in and of itself
Student- "They could have been kidnapped into space or another dimension."
Gov Agent- "we're not playing around here kid."
Student- " Have you ever heard of Mojo? They could have been turned to babies!"
Great dialog! Which once again just goes to prove my old theory, X-Babies should be made into Heroclix!
Also nice splash pages throughout this issue.
Self-Appointed Leader of the X-Babies Action Pack Society!
So, the Warbound splits up, with all but Hulk heading North to the plains to seek sanctuary from the Emporer. Hulk wants to leave the group, cut out before he looses it. He knows the beast is welling up, and he's going to snap at some point. Instead he heads down with an army to stom the gray skinned chick and her army.
Apparently she possess the 'old power' which gives her all manner of super human abilities (invulnerability, super strength, etc). She reveals how she came into the Emporer's service when an 'alien' plague descended and consumed her village (think the Flood from Halo, the merge with a victim, and turn them). The Emporer let it happened, and killed them all just to get to her. So she's come to try and kill the Hulk before the Emporer destroys millions in his quest to kill Hulk.
They duke it out, and finally pump everything into a simultaneous blow which causes after shocks felt round the whole planet. Both survive, of course, but it's to late. The Emporer drows a 'missle' loaded with the deadly spores and in a flash, both armies are consumed and turned into the 'Spikes' (the name for the plague infested people). With thousands arrayed against them, Hulk just smiles and basically says 'Bring it on.'
On Captain America, Brubaker gets a 10/10. It was so nice to see this arc with some Invaders popping up, and how the Skull will turn anything and everything into an advantage. Cap is kicking ### and taking names, I love it.
