There’s no real ranking system. Some are good clix, others not so much. Mainly I’m just shooting for the most ‘monsterific.’ So just go with it.
#10 – Tie; Fury – Not sure what kind of monster she is, exactly. Man-bat – Tie with Fury. Someone set them up on a date. Imagine what their kids would look like.
They are tenth on the list only because of the sheer number of similar characters. They could be their own sub-genre of monster.
Honorable mention: Sauron – he’s a third wheel to Man-bat and Fury.
#9 Hecate – Naked Snake chick (on a plane?)
Snake-chick monsters have always been popular lore, from Medusa to Hecate, and uh, can’t really think of any others. She’s a little high on the list because even though she combines two things that gamers are scared of; chicks and snakes, she’s still kinda sexy in a creepy green skinned way.
#8 Killer Croc – Crikey!
Honorable mention: Lizard – Save 15% on your car insurance!
Urban legends of giant crocodiles in the sewer is the stuff that scares young kids in big cities everywhere. Anthropomorphic sewer dwelling crocodiles are even worse.
Killer Croc is also one of the few ‘super powered’ villains in Batman’s rogues gallery.
He’s a little high on the list because the writer’s lately can’t seem to make up their mind whether he’s even a monster, or just a guy with really bad psoriasis and an attitude.
#7 Scarlet Witch – Brian Michael Bendis made me do what?
(Or… “She turned me into a Newt!” “A Newt?” “I got better.”)
Even though Scarlet Witch doesn’t have the stereotypical pointy hat, forgoes black for red, and is actually a mutant.. she still makes the list because for all intents and purposes, she is a witch (burn ‘er!)
Also, It wouldn’t really be Halloween without some scantily clad witch.
#6 Wendigo – Donner, party of two!
Honorable mention: Sasquatch – No proof this figure really exists.
Wendigo is a monster of lore that beats out Sasquatch because even though big foot is a popular mystery, Wendigo is actually supernaturally created when lost and desperate hunters look at their buddies and see, Bugs Bunny-like, a giant lamb chop (or chicken leg, or t-bone steak) and chow down.
Wendigos are amazingly difficult to kill, and have a ravenous appetite for human flesh. Truly a scary monster.
That is, if you’re out in the Canadian woods. But really, we’d rather be safe and warm somewhere playing clix (or WoW.)
#6 Solomon Grundy – Zombies are people too.
Solomon Grundy, born on a Monday,
Christened on a stark and stormy Tuesday,
Married on a gray and grisly Wednesday,
Took ill on a mild and mellow Thursday,
Grew worse on a bright and breezy Friday,
Died on a gay and glorious Saturday,
Buried on a baking, blistering Sunday.
That was the end of Solomon Grundy
#5 Ghost Rider – Remember, today is when you’re supposed to replace the batteries in your smoke detectors.
Fire, skeletons, demonic possession, haunted motorcycles.. what’s not to like about this?
Toss in a pact with the devil (that backfired!), a lineage that goes back to the wild west (and maybe further), and an upcoming movie with Nic Cage (ok, maybe ignore that last part)… and you’ve got a pretty cool concept.
It helps too, that his sculpt is just dang cool looking, and his freakin’ head is on fire!
#4 The Demon – Roses are red, violets are blue…
Honorable mention: Blue Devil – Not as good as ‘Devil in a Blue Dress.’
The Demon is a straight up hellspawn, right from the depths. No fancy name, no trick or treat, he is what he is, a Demon. That alone gets him on the upper side of the top ten. What holds him back though, is hellspawn or not, talking in iambic pentameter is not scary, unless you’re an 8th grader delivering your first soliloquy from A Midsummer Night’s Dream to a full auditorium.
#2 Ghost Widow – Double evil name, like the spooky version of ‘Bacon Wrapped.’
She’s a Ghost and a Widow! Spooky! She’s an evil creature from the City of Villains video game come to life (ok, come to clix) thanks to a cross over promotion. She’s the staple in a 2 course meal of wildcard cheese and whine! A ‘mystic’ (you know you call it ‘mystics’ even though its really Arachnos), a healer, a poison fig, and dang hard to hit as well! Scary on or off the clix map.
#1 Hellboy – Dammit, I am not ‘Beast’! (Though I guess I'm not the 'beauty' either. )
Hellboy, he’s from Hell, but he’s really a nice guy! He likes kittens! But he’s also hardcore… not only does he carry a RBG, but he breaks off his own dang horns! That’s gotta hurt!
But he’s popular too; with a feature film (& and upcoming sequel), a cartoon, several comics, an upcoming Hero/HorrorClix collectors set and even a cartoon movie. How can Hellboy be anything but the #1 HeroClix Monster?
Other Honorable Mentions: Green Goblin – One version is a real monster, but the other is a guy in a rubber mask. How do you differentiate them? You don’t. So he’s out.
Black Cat – Not really a monster, but you can’t have Halloween without the obligatory black cat, so she gets an HM.
Swamp Thing, Man-Thing, The Thing, Wild Thing – Tie. It’s ungentlemanly to compare Things.
Vampire Lackey – Honorable mention. Doesn’t make the list because she’s just a lackey.
The rest:
Scarecrow & Mr. Bones – More like decorations than actual monsters.
Ghost – Disqualified for false advertising. Not really a ghost.
Nightcrawler – Don’t stare just because he looks different.
No love for Jack O'Lantern, even though he's dressed for a Halloween bash? No love for the Moloid, even though he looks like Gollum?
On the subject of witches, Enchantress is one and does have a pointy hat.
That's all.

In memory of Ricardo Gonzalo Pedro Montalbán Merino
Vampire Batman should've been at least honorable mention.
Give us the Flying Dutchman's Ghost.
