I started a thread like this a year or two ago, and it got pulled because (I think) several posters ended up making fun of the Italian army. But people were having fun with it before then, so I think I'll try it again.
It's 1944. You've been captured by the Gestapo and taken to their headquarters in a castle atop the Bavarian mountains (like in Where Eagles Dare). You sit in a corner of a dank, dirty cell, knowing that in the morning, you will be taken to the interrogation room and subjected to cruel tortures to force you to spill the date/location of the D-Day invasion.
Who do you prefer your rescuer to be? Choose one from the following list and explain why.
1) Golden Age Batman
2) The Shadow
3) Sgt. Fury and the Howling Commandos
4) The Losers
5) Indiana Jones
6) Sgt. Rock and Easy Company
7) The Unknown Soldier
Personally I would prefer Wonder Woman or Phantom Lady...
That being said, of the characters you listed, Sgt. Rock and Easy Co. all the way. All of the ones you mentioned are pretty great - though Indy still has to earn his dues - but I'd say Sgt. Rock is one of my all-time favourites (actually, I like most of DC's WWII comics so the Losers wouldn't be too terrible either and like many folks I'm a big Batman fan so he'd be alright as well and the Shadow's also pretty snazzy...Dr. Mid-Nite or the Sandman would've been my first choices but they're not on the list. ).
"Nobody important? That's amazing. You know, in 900 years of traveling time and space I've never met someone who wasn't important."

No, you were right the first time. The Italian army *is* horrible. Historically speaking, anyway. As far as NATO allies go today, well, they're a step up on Greece, but they're nowhere near as good as the Czechs or the Dutch. Read an account of the Battles of the Isonzo in WWI if you want a laughable (well, but for the thousands of casualties) glimpse at two third-tier armies fighting on the same ground for two years - and neither one of them showing any real improvement...
Remember, while you two discuss the merits of the Italian Army during World War I, you're both still rotting in a Gestapo dungeon. Who the heck do you want to come rescue you?
"two third-tier armies fighting on the same ground for two years - and neither one of them showing any real improvement..."
That kinda sums up the western end of WWI as a whole
Oh, no. The Western Front was a bunch of very, very good armies slaughtering each other on a wholesale level. They just happened to be led by generals who were using Napoleonic tactics, while their men fought with modern weapons. They should have paid a bit more attention to the American Civil War if they wanted to know how that would turn out. Isonzo was unique because (depending on who's counting) there were between 12 and 20 battles there. So they might not have been very good, but they were persistent. Points for that, I guess.
Oh, and I'd want to go with Sgt. Rock. I'm pretty sure they've got a ghost tank and I'm thinking that would come in handy.
True, there was a lot of death, but hardly any ground was gained.
I was more refering to the "neither one of them showing real improvement" than the "third-tier" part.
So thanks, but no thanks Losers, I'd rather be saved by the original Suicide Squad.

The Losers usually completed their missions successfully--though they did all get killed on their very last mission. So they did pretty good through most of their career.
