Tharok's metallic fingers tapped the round table as he sat in the darkened command center of the Fatal Five hideaway.

It's all come down to this, the half-man, half-machine brooded to himself. The Emerald Empress' galavanting missions to the 21st Century in hopes of claiming Superboy ... or whelps who remind her of Superboy ... have sent this team spiraling. Every one has gone our separate ways, and even Glorith couldn't wrestle leadership away from the Empress.

A loud ripping sound of the sliding door erupted through Tharok's contemplation. His robotic eye shines a light toward the door as an bulky man carrying a large ax peeled away the steel.

"Persuader?" Tharok said. "Where have you been?"

"Scoping out our chance to restore the Five!" he shouted. "All we need is a conquest, and I've got the perfect chance. There's a new gang causing havoc on Talok IV, being led by some hopped-up Durlan and a bloodthristy Tamaranean. We take 'em down hard, and the Five is back in business."

Tharok nodded.

"Sounds fine, but understand we're short handed," he replied. "The Emerald Eye is healing, thus even if we wanted the Empress around, she's a no-go. All we've got around here is those two 20th Century relicts on ice, and---"

Persuader swung his axe, slicing through a locked compartment on the wall.

"We have The Machine!" Persuader said.

Through the exposed safe, Tharok saw the golden box.

"The Miracle Machine," Tharok sighed. "You believe it's come to that, Persuader?"

"Yes!" he shouted. " We worked hard to swipe the machine from Legion Headquarters, and now is the time to use it against these new foes! We'll have the power to create Earthquakes, turn the battlefield into a Wasteland or inflict the landscape with Madness! The time is now!"

Persuader reached for the Miracle Machine, but pulled his hand back instantly. A shock of pain rattled his hand and lit up the area where the machine sat.

"What?"

"Come now, Persuader," Tharok said. "Did you really think we'd allow the Machine to be taken with a simple swipe of your Atomic Axe?"

"But--"

"You've made two propositions," Tharok said. "I like the first. The second will have to wait another day. Besides, that force field is mystical in nature. Thaw out Frost and Freeze. Let's perform a miracle of our own eh?"

That green sentient being peered out of the building as an ice wall from Killer Frost went up.

"Got me. I just told you guys what I saw on the newsbot. Green alien-looking thing one minute, craggy rock creature the next. Sounds like a Durlan to me. What, you've never seen a green Durlan?"

"There's no such thing!"

"But..." Mr. Freeze interjected. "You've said these Durlans are shape-shifters, so how do you know you've never see a green--"

"The mission is sprocked!" Tharok threw up his arms. "Don't you get it?"

Displaying his robotic arm, a hidden compartment ejected, filled with various darts and cartridges.

"Durlan Yorggian Fever Virus," Tharok said, pointing to a vial. "Durlan Antennae Inhibitor. Durlan Death Ray. Durlan Cancellite Spray. .... You see the problem?"

Persuader nodded his head.

"So this is why Chameleon Chief joined the Legion of Super Villains instead," he said. "Well, keep trying to hit the guy with that stuff anyhow. Those nanites you send ahead seemed to have slowed him down so far."
