HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
This is a tough movie to rate.
I think that the topic would have been depicted better in a documentary rather than a commercial movie. There is too much pathos, the emotions of the viewer are manipulated through the use of cinematic techniques where a presentation of facts would have been enough.
7/10
Personally, I felt this film was a true cinematic Masterpiece, one truly deserving of Spielbergs first and only Oscar, and one of the best dramatic movies I have ever seen. The subject matter is horrendous, though I would imagine quite accurate of what actually happened during that time. The B&W look was an interesting choice, which made it feel dated to the point that it was actually from this time period. The acting was superb, the directing top notch, the music haunting, and even though the material within was as dark and disturbing as one could possibly imagine, the film as a hole was about hope and the efforts of one man who at first didnt care much at all for his fellow human beings and his transition to one putting his life on the line to safe thousands (cursing himself at the end for not saving more). Subject matter aside, this is an epic film, one which everyone should watch, and one which I think it one of Spielbergs all time best.
Schindlers List - 9.50 / 10

There have been a ton of documentary's on this subject already, there is no problem with a director making a movie about it, particularly when they do it with this much style. When making a movie your goal is to use cinematic techniques to manipulate the audience, that is what a movie is. You can't give a movie a bad review for not being a documentary, it doesn't even make sense. That is like looking at a Van Gogh and saying it is okay but it would have been better if it wasn't so starry and perhaps if it was set in the day, you know to lighten things up.
This fillm is a masterpiece that challenges viewers that wouldn't have otherwise challenged themselves with the subject matter. Chances are that average nebraska mom wouldn't go out and watch a documentary about the holocaust but she would go to a film by Steven Spielberg starring Liam Neeson. It is brilliantly shot and mixes cinematic elements with depictions of true horrors brilliantly. Technically it is in a league of its own, the soundtrack is haunting and the performances are moving.
Though this is the fictionalized story of true events and perhaps can be criticized for its "Hollywoodization", it remains that the horrors did occur and that those who did what they could to help their fellow humans were true heroes. I am not Jewish, nor was my family directly affected by WW2. All the same, this film created a sense of empathy that remains with me to this day.
BTW, if anyone has the chance to visit the National Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, I highly recommend that you do so. Spielberg donated all kinds of money to it, and by the time that you walk out of the place, the events depicted are even more real and poignant than you could imagine.

Well, someone already has gone "Spinal Tap" on this one and turned it up to 11, but yeah, this wasn't a film.
This was a milestone.
This was history in the making of a historical story. (And it was as close to historically accurate as one can get, in my own opinion.)
No film Spielberg will ever do will accomplish what this film did, even as important and as powerful as "Saving Private Ryan" doesn't even approach "Schindler's List" as far as importance.
No greater film has ever been made.
Forget the money, remember the importance of the story. Everyone lauded over "the tragedy" that was Titanic. James Cameron made a cultural film, blah, blah, blah. At the end of the day, I didn't feel the need to be more sensitive to cruise sinkings, as I was when it came to the subject of the Holocaust.
"Schindler's List" was all that, and more. Films like "List," "Patton," "Passion of the Christ," "Saving Private Ryan," "Platoon," "Roots," "The Accused," and "Gandhi" are beyond being "movies" or films. They are touchstones of a society's moral and ethical view on the world. They show history and moments that defined it; or they are films that grab you by the shirt, slap you across the face, and bring you to another level of consiousness. They make you aware.
Few films have made me cry. THIS film, I had to after leaving, sit in the car alone and just sob. I was moved that much by it. (Also one of the reasons I get very terse and angry when folks throw around the "Nazi" term to describe someone strict. To use "Nazi" to describe someone who is harsh not only insults that person, but it belittles the trials and sheer evil that the concentration camp surivors and victims faced.)
My father served in Germany as a Major in the US Army, some 15 years after WWII. While there, he nor my Mom ever visited the concentration camps, even though my Mom wanted to see them. His belief, which I can fully understand after seeing "List."
"If I see it, what they did, with my own eyes; I can't give my life to defend them."
