HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
How NOT to make a movie about a licensed product, especially one that was currently "BIG" a'la MOTU (well at the time). Take everything about the license, turn it on its head to the point the only recognizable parts from it are a handful of the characters who remotely look like what they're representing, a whole bunch of new previously unknown characters replacing well known characters and teleport them all to Earth for no good reason. While reboots like this can and have worked, He-Man didn't need one at the time and the movie suffered because of it.
This movie is so horrible its enjoyable just for that fact. I actually believe my favorite time watching it was in spanish on the spanish channel because I was drunk and found it hilarious for some reason.
At the end of the credits you see Skeletor pop his head up out of the "lava" and say "I'll be back..."
No. No you wont and thank god for that.

Eh, I don’t know about anyone else (well, cept IAM118’s hatred of it, of course ), but I kinda enjoyed this one. I mean sure it was a departure from the cartoon, which I watched heavily as a kid, but overall it stayed fairly true to the source material, and just made it a bit more adult overall. He-Man wasn’t the strongest man in the universe, but he was the leader and champion of the people of Eternia, who fought against the tyrannical ruling of the evil Skeletor (who I thought was played to perfection by Frank Langella). Evil Lyn was cool, Beastman was primal, Man At Arms and Teela were decent enough, and even Dolph as He-Man was OK overall. (didn’t care for the Orko clone of the little science genius alien though, but I guess you had to have something for the young kids) The affects were fine for the time, the story OK, and Bill Conti’s score was well done as always. Personally for a cartoon to live action movie of its day, I thought it was pretty good, and Lord knows Ive seen worse movies in my time. Was it a Great film, no of course not, but it wasn’t Horrible either, and as a fan of the cartoon growing up, I did like what they did with it here in the end.
Masters Of The Universe - 7 / 10

This really is THE example of writers and producers who know nothing about what makes something cool, trying to change it for the masses and failing miserably. This movie is awful from beggining to end, even as a kid I hated it, and kids generally like anything on TV that isn't school related.
For me this movie was the Michael Bay's Transformers of the 80's.
I was so underwhelmed when I first saw this movie. Being a child of the 80's, I of course grew up watching He-Man. This film looked liked the writers sat down and watched probably 3 episodes then said "ok, we know what it is, now let's try making it cooler." The whole coming to earth thing was stupid, what's wrong with setting it in Eternia? That way, we would have gotten more of the characters in it (I'm looking right dead at Trapjaw, Ram-Man and Man-E-Faces). Dolph was serviceable as He-Man, Skeletor was great but did too little, didn't really care for Evil-Lyn, Beastmaster was rather spot on, hated those other Skeletor reject lackeys and the Man-at-arms/Teela duo came off as pretty much dead weight. I know license to film adaptions need a few minor tweaks for overall fan appeal but don't throw the whole source material on its ear.(That may have been a bit harsh)
3.5/10 is my score. The movie as a whole is just not good. And by good I mean, doesn't do anything for me. Usually, films with mediocre plot, story and acting can be saved in my eyes if there is terrific humor and fantastic action sequences, both of which are absent in this film. I've tried to give this a chance but can't do it. With the success of LOTR and Chronicles of Narnia in the fantasy genre, I hope He-Man gets another shot at the big screen.
Ill take Frank Langellas Skeletor over the barely seen Hugo Weaving Megatron, any day of the week.
Meh, thats just because Transformers had a sickness and the cure is... MORE STARSCREAM! (even if he looks like a gorilla)
Then again, its a Micheal Bay movie so he won't waste character development time to give us a proper Starscream and instead just make a jetformer and plop the name on him.

Quoted for truth. Not great, but for those of us who did not watch the show, it's serviceable....
Yes, but you're a surrealist! I'm a normal guy!
