It did seem like a bit much for a DC comic. I thought it was a good shoking twist though so it served its purpose. It wasn't just gore for the sake of gore in my opinion.

Yes, the scene was incredibly gory. It was a huge shock to me as a reader... not just that it happened, but the ferocity of it and the amount we were shown.
However, this was a necessary bit of storytelling. We needed to see Teth-Adam go over the edge, see him snap, and we needed to buy into it. This worked. Even to someone as jaded as Teth-Adam, this was a cruel and horrific death and betrayal. We bought it.
Honestly, it was one of the high points of the series for me, one of the most moving moments we saw.
