Ok, maybe he's not evil but read that and tell me he isn't the reason Spidey is sucking so bad. A ton of people have been insisting that his agenda was the reason for this.
And from the horse's mouth........
JQ deserves a to the :knockedou (even if he does his job out of love)
Which may have hurt Cap fans a bit, but has made tons more people actually care about Steve Rogers. I mean, Captain America has an impact on the Marvel Universe like he hasn't had in 30 years. Controvertial and tragic as it may be, Cap's death has been a successful move thus far with little negative repercussions.

I'd be thanking Brubaker for that. The guy can spin a yarn most of the time.

I'd rather have him alive and 'not cared about' other than his fans (being one of em...sol=Sentinel of Liberty), but I get what they were trying to do.
What I can't abide is all of these young editorial punks' complete and utter disregard for the history of comics. One of Marvel's greatest strengths used to be its cohesion, the fact that everything tied nicely together. You once felt like you could visit the Marvel Universe and interact with the characters, which is what made them so likeable in the first place: their relateability.
Now it seems that the solid foundation the company has been built upon is more and more resembling swiss cheese, with plot holes and inconsistancies as big as my balled fist. Writers seems to be having pissing contests, seeing who can deficate most on the previous writers' work. It's so disrespectful to the great folk who put it all together to do what they're doing now.
Why has Matt Fraction turned the Punisher into a joke told in shop class? Punisher: War Journal is one of the worst, gimmicky comics it has been my displeasure to read. Who the heck kills STILT-MAN, for crying out loud?
Why would Warren Ellis re-write Iron Man's origin to take place during the freakin' GULF WAR?!? If you're going to do that kind of tripe, at least have the decency to do it in the Ultimate Universe, where consistancy didn't exist from day one.
Why has Brian Bendis turned the Marvel Universe's most beloved characters into stuttering goons? New Avengers is (and always has been) soooo bad. The art is horrible, and the newest issue's "dialogue" made me want to gouge my eyes out.
Spider-Man: "You mean...you mean we all could be...could be skrulls?"
Dr. Strange: "It...it seems...it seems like we...can we trust...?"
Wolverine: "Nobody here smells like...like a skrull."
Luke Cage: "That's just the kinda thing I'd expect a mother-lickin' skrull to say! Booyah!"
Ronin (Why, Hawkeye? WHY?): "Hey, you can't use booyah. Booyah's my word."
Echo: "Clint, although...I'm supposedly deaf...and I was looking at the back of your head when you said that...I can tell that you just made a snarky remark, and so I'll just say something generic here so that everyone remembers I'm still around. What have you got to say to that, Spider-Man, whose mask is on? I'd really like to hear it. See it, I mean. But I can do neither."
Iron Fist: "Yeah, what that chick said....except for the deaf part. And...and I was looking Clint's butt."
Spider-Man: "B...boobies. Ha ha ha...fart joke."
Dr. Strange: "Let's...let's just take some time...some time to sit around in my Sanctum. We must dwell on this...no need to let any of the other heroes know about it...you know, like my friends the Illuminaaaaaah...nevermind."
Luke Cage: "Dang, Dr. Strangelove, now you soundin' like a skrull!"
Jessica Jones: "Take me to your leader. We come from France. Klaatu barada nikto."
At least there's still Dan Slott. He'll fix Spider-Man, mark my freakin' words. Err...as long as Joey Q. doesn't make him start killing his villains or some nonsense.

I truly hope so. So far his work on Avengers Initiative, and more importantly Spider-Man, has been much better than all the wacky stuff JMS and Joe have cooked up for him. Initiative is basically the only marvel comic I buy anymore.
I have to commend your assessment on the young editorial punkage and lousy New Avengers art as well.
Why would Warren Ellis re-write Iron Man's origin to take place during the freakin' GULF WAR?!?
Because he has been told to do so by editorial. Why doe editorial think that the old Vietnam origin needs an update? Because it's 2007 and Tony Stark is obviously barely old enough to even have been alive at that time.

To me, that's just a big cop-out, editorially speaking. In the past, Marvel has had the good sense to be vauge about details. When dealing with Iron Man's origin, you can easily tell it without linking it to the Vietnam war, or the Gulf war, or whatever stupid war exists in our lives. The "616" Universe and...ha ha...our universe (I wonder what number we are? ) need not necessarily have the same timeline. Time has obviously always worked differently in the Marvel Universe, or else Kitty Pride would be 40 years old (and still smokin'...what, I'm not an "ageist", okay?!).
It's these radical changes to past continuity that break up the suspension of disbelief. That's my biggest problem with DC: they keep rewriting history so that the stories of the past have less, little, or no bearing whatsoever. Admittedly, at the end of the day, they're all just stories, but stories are much more enjoyable if they're consistant, if you feel like the characters and events matter.

Yes, time does work differently in th MU, and her is how it works: the MU is on a sliding time scale.
All new Marvel comics take place now. Most characters have been around for about ten years. Thus, their origin stories move further along the time line as time goes on. Captain America for instance completely missed the cold war.
There's a few exceptions, like Nick Fury who get eternal youth (well, eternal middleage) throug clean living and chemisrtry, and the Punisher who, in the MAX series at least, is in his late fifties.
By the way, things work exactly the same over at DC. Batman has been Batman for 10-12 years. He wasn't around during the 1970s.

I wouldn't say it's a radical change. It's merely a change of scenery. A costum change for th extras beate up by the old Iron Man 1.0.
Incidently, they've learned from the past. Ellis' Iron Man origin is et in the Middle-East, but not during a specific conflict, or in a specific country. Of course, lesser writers may have filled in the blanks in books I haven't read.

I fail to see how DC does this to a greater degree than Marvel. And when DC does it, it usually goes with a cataclysmical event that rewrites bitw and pieces of history in-story. Not by an arbitrary out-of-story retcon.
Admittedly, this is a slight difference, but it's still the difference between Iron Man not having a Korean origin for no apparent in)story reason, and Wonder Woman now being a founding member of the JLA because some alternate Earths all got smooshed together.

I'm going to quote and bold the important part of that post of his:

You know, if you're an editor, and one of your "big" talents is ready to distance himself because of a decision that you've made, maybe that's a sign that it's a HORRIBLE ####ING IDEA!

In the time it takes you to read this, I'm hitting on your sister. If she doesn't take the bait, I've got your mom on hold.

It's a shame JMS didn't have the gumption to stand up to Joe Q over this, maybe the situation could have been avoided all together.
That really gave me some respect for JMS. I still don't particularly like him on Spider-Man, but I'm glad that he isn't directly responsible for two of the worst ideas to hit Spider-Man ever (Goblin babies and OMD).
I've noticed that ever since Queseda has tried to "fix" Spider-Man, he's gotten progressively worse. This is after Howard Mackie tried to "fix" him as well and basically gave us something that was only good relative to how bad the Clone Saga was. I'd really really really like it if people stopped trying to "fix" Spider-Man and instead try to remember what mad him a great character to begin with. At this point, "fix" upon "fix" just seems to make things worse and worse, and I'm really hoping Brand New Day can live up to its promises. At the very least, I hope it won't make things any worse.
