By SHIELD001 (Originally by C-dog) Theme #16: Scientist
By process of elimination, the electron must taste like Grapeade.
Welcome to another edition of Competitive Keyword Theme Team Building, with SHIELD001. This week, we are going to deal with a Keyword that represents a group of people you won’t listen to until it’s too late, Scientist.
I don't want to play a game of chess where dumb luck or money decides whether or not I get to use a rook... Collectibility is a necessary evil of Heroclix, not a boon.
Theme Team Rules
A quick recap here. Keyword Theme Teams have all the characters on the force sharing a single common Keyword among the Keywords listed on their character cards. The force must consist of at least 3 or more characters with the same Keyword, and at least one character for each 100 points.
Theme Teams give you several perks:
1) You may have one use of Probability Control per game per every 3 Keyword characters you play (you must give a token to the figure using PC when doing so, and he can’t be part of the action).
2) You add +X (X = the number of Keyword people on your team) to your dice roll to choose map/go first.
3) You may ignore one Battle Field Condition during the game.
Enough talking -
Since this article is about competitive Keyword Theme Teams I will only be doing 300 point teams for the most part. Revenge of the Nerds
I got a lot of teams this week, so I only made 2 myself...
(M+M)Hulk + Inside Information + Monster Hunter 150
(Avengers) Wasp 49
(SIN)R Fixer 52
(SN)R Ant-Man + Alpha Flight 48
Double Outwit should insure that the Hulk's damage is not hampered and that your opponent might not get to use some of those nasty Special Powers that have been going around. Inside Info and Monster Hunter do more than just qualify this team for floor, they also give the Hulk some potential attack increases, assuming the Keywords match up. Considering this team is for Floor that might be more likely than you think . Fixer can carry the Hulk around and take some pot shots. Thanks to Psy-blast his damage will get through and allow you to Outwit something else. Wasp gets to fly Ant-man around (hopefully she doesn't hold anything against the 616 Ant-Man ). Wasp's Ultimates TA can help you tag an annoying Stealthed support piece. Ant-Man just helps out with Outwit and can make a Charge attack to finish someone off if needed. Try to memorize Hulk's dial so you know when to push. That 19def click should be annoying and keep him on that click for a while. Do I really need to tell you to get the Hulk off his first click and into close combat?
BFC suggestions:
Restricted: Deep Shadows, Debris, Shrunk
Unrestricted: Warzone, Disbanded,
Debris will give hulk some extra objects, though you might wat to be carful about when you play it since you will probably see some other Super Strength around. With disbanded you lose your supporting TA's but its worth it to avoid Mystic and other wildcard abuse.
Team # 2 Restricted 300 points
Map Bonus: +4
PC: 1 (SN)R Kang + AP + Nanobots + Monster Hunter OR Inside Information 110 OR 111
(SIN)E Spiderman (sinister) 77
(Origin)V Atom 64
(SN)R Ant-man + Alpha Flight 48 OR Avengers Wasp 49
Spidey can use Leap-Climb and the Transporter Move and Attack ability since its a move action. This means Spidey can make an attack and get Kang or one of the others where they need to be. He can also borrow Kang's TA and keep attacking every turn, or pull Kang out of battle for healing. Kang does what he does, blast away at the enemy every turn and then use an object to heal up. Hopefully you can set it up to where he attacks, pushes onto his first 2 damage click and be next to an object to heal with. Atom and Ant-man can keep the opponent busy with there 18 def while Kang plugs away. Just don't use Energy Explosion when doing this or you could hurt Ant-Man or Atom.
Now for the OR options. If you would rather have anti-stealth than Outwit add Wasp to the team. She can give her TA to Spidey and they can both take care of any stealth threats. If you go with Wasp you can give Kang or someone Monster Hunter. If you stick with Ant-Man you can give someone Inside Information, which should go on Spidey or Kang.
BFC: Dark Shadows, Shrunk, Pacification
Map Choice: Avengers tanks, Junk yard
The strategy is simply. Use High Evolutionary to carry around Dr. Mid-nite and blast people. Try to base as many people as possible with Dark bBeast. Start off with him attacking and when he is knocked on to his special power, use it to cause mayhem. Stingray can tie up pieces for High Evolutionary. If anyone starts to run low on health, use Dr. Mid-nite to heal them back up.
Review:
I thought I heard someoe say they got there Dark Beast but, I don't think most of us have him so that could make this team hard to field. That said its nice. With Mid-Nite, High Evolutionary should be able to stay on those Power Cosmic clicks. Dark Beast makes a god secondary attacker and I know I can't wait to try that SP.
What this team does well is Range. The Experienced version of Kang from Supernova is, in my opinion, one of the better range pieces for its cost and with Stunning Blow it is a piece to be feared. The Rookie Fixer is an often overlooked piece. Top-loaded it has Psychic Blast and Outwit, which may make any major brick think twice about getting to close to it, and about half way down he gains Mind Control which can surprise opponents and turn the tables quickly. Trapster is all about board control, with Barrier and Dual incap he is a major pest, for those who aren’t fans, he can be subbed for R Ant-Man from Supernova (Also 48) or Ultimates Wasp from Avengers (49, and in place of Lucky Break's other four points, Inside Information on Kang). The Technicians bring a nice ranged attack boost as well as end dial healing.
Restricted BFC's: Atlantis Rising, Inferno, Isolation, Loyalty, The Great Arena (With Kang's high end dial attack, those double 2's may even hit)
Unresticted: Bright Lights
Review:
I am a BIG fan of Supernova Kang and any team with a T-Bolt on its extra points in my book! That said Trapster?? I guess if you get past the name the E Paster Pot Pete is not bad, he does have perplex and barrier for good support. Thiss looks like a good team for Malice even if you don't ignore it you can use it to get those Technicians on their Support clicks, and then you can heal Kang if he desides to push every turn!
Living Laser (Avengers) 91 points + Protected 8 points + Point Blank 4 points = 103 points
V Atom (Origins) 64 points + Protected 8 points = 72 points
E Hydra Technician (Sinister) 19 points
Have Living Laser carry the technician around. His team power will help with Lasers average starting attack. If you can try to move close to your opponent with LL so you can take advantage of point blank as well.
Atom should hang back and perplex Flash and Laser all game.
The flash should target any stealth figures first as they will be nearly impossible for Laser to deal with.
Suggested Map: Here you have a conflict of interest. The Flash want's a lot of nooks and crannies he can hide behind while Laser wants open spaces to utilize his range. I suggest the museum (the one with all the statues of origins figs). The flash has walls to hide behind but there are open spaces so Laser can work well too. Also atoms phasing will let him get where he needs to go regardless of the walls.
Suggested BFC's: (Bright Lights) If you play this ignore whatever your opponent brings to the table. This will help deal with stealth teams.
Review:
This is my kind of team, nice and balanced. I would probably give a Protected to Flash instead of Atom if you are going to keep Atom back. Of course I think Atom should get up in the enemys face. If you keep him with Protected it should frusterate your opponent when they finaly hit him and his Def goes up because he pushed to use protected.

No room for feats on that one (obviously), but I just really like to use those particular figures...
Review:
Kang is really good with AP, I don't like to field him without it. Of course that means you would have to replace Ant-Man with manybe 2 E Hydra Techs. Those Techs are growing on me as a cheap Support piece. They also up Iron Man and Kang's range attack. On Team two they are needed even more to help Living Laser's attack. If you add the 2 Techs to the second team you can add Nano-armor to Iron Man with the 6 left over points.

Nano for H.E. to keep his either near the top or just help him hang on to Power Cosmic.
Living Laser to be a ranged pest.
Dr. Choi ties up some trouble and the good Doctor brings his medical degree to hopefully keep his fellow nerds able to stand up to the Alphas.
While I don't expect the Inside Informations to be all too useful with this team, I just have a fondness for them and decided they were the best way to make up the 7pts I needed for floor.
Review:
A solid one-two punch team. Living Laser needs a little luck with his low attack.

296pts.
Leader can copy Wasp's Ultimates TA to Outwit or plain old cap stealthed figs. Or get a +1 from Alpha Flight. While pouncing a enemy of Alpha, Stingray hits an 11 atk score!
Team 2
(M+M)Zombie Giant Man with Inside Info 102pts.
(Avengers)Living Laser
(Sin)Wizard (E) with TK reach 86pts.
(Sin)Hydra Tech (E) 19pts.
298pts.
Laser caries the Tech arround during a Running Shot as his 9 atk score isn't good enough! But with Hydra and Wizard's perplex...an 11 is MUCH BETTER!!! Hail Hydra! I expect to see some Cuckoo abuse teams arround so Giant Man can pick up and throw the Fuel tank at the horde over everyone's heads! And he can have an 11 atk score while doing it too! Wizards TK reach can help bring in Objects for Gaint man to abuse!
Review:
The Leader is an interesting click and giving him an anti-stealth TA is just mean. I still think Kang needs AP so I would drop Stingray and add 2 Hydra Techs. This also gives Leader some more MM fodder. I think you can get more use out of R Fixer and R Ant-man instead of Zombie Giant Man but being able to see over people is an advantage with Outwit.
Well that’s it, thanks for reading. As always, please give me some feedback, any thoughts on how you’d make the teams better, specific examples would be great!
Next week will be Colossus ...What Colossus isn’t a Keyword? That’s because the teams next week will all have M+M Colossus and I will make at one team for each of his Keywords: Armor, Mutant, X-Men
If you have an idea for a team you can PM it to me and I will probably add it to the article.
You just have to follow this format:
•They must be legal Keyword Theme teams for the Keyword(s) I have picked (next weeks is Armor, Mutant, or X-Men AND each team must have M+M Colossus on it ).
•The team must be 300 points or less.
•You must also tell me how you would use the team and what BFCs you would use with the team.
•Deadline is 12/20/07 before 3:00 pm (next thursday).
I will of course give you credit and rep you as well as post a link where others can rep you.
Now I did get a lot of great teams this week! Maybe too many...
So, would you like me to continue posting every team I get and review it or would you rather me pick 3-4 teams of those that get submitted and only post those? Post the answer in your reply or PM me!
I am going to try and get some links up so you don't have to search for posts by the people that submitted teams to rep them, but that wont be until Tuesday Still maybe if they post here we can just rep them here

At 111 points, he fits nicely under the FLOOR cap, and he also has the following going for him:
Green Lantern TA, great for carrying your non-fliers
12 Range, plus 3 damage and starting Perplex.
I used him in a non-theme team, and did all right. If you have the right feats (from M&M): (basically anything 4 points or more) you can "Scientist" up
Tomar Re
2x Labcoat Beast
Dr. Mid-nite (r or e, depending on the feats used)
Surprised Mandarin didn't make the cut on any of the teams. He's actually a rather good fig, even in 300. And there's enough cheap Scientists that you could do a theme around him.
Something like:
Mandarin + Mental Shields + Protected
R Kang + AP
R Dr. Mid-Nite
Well, okay, not exactly cheap... but you get the idea (what can I say, I like R Kang too).
