Leader's Minions of the Leader SP

It says that Leader can use Toughness and Mastermind. Does that mean damage is reduced by one, and then passed off to the fodder? Or is it that he can use one or the other? I'm not really sure here...

I think it's just if he can mastermind it off he can use toughness to reduce it by 1 instead of eating it all up.
