The Keyword Theme is a new mechanic and relatively untested thanks to 10 weeks of summer sealed events along with the temporary disbanding of Approved Play. Whether you like the new keyword mechanic or not progress is determined to march the game forward and a flood of Keyword Theme Teams hit the maps with the release of Mutations and Monsters.
This column NORMALLY explores how viable Keyword Themes are in both friendly and tournament play. Please visit Rock810's excellent "What did you play, how did it do" thread, post your own Keyword Theme experience and you too could be honored in an upcoming Keyword Theme Team of the Week!
THIS WEEK we're taking a break from the normal Keyword mechanic and honoring all the custom painters & mod makers focusing on a custom team - made just for a holiday theme event. Tkwink spent a lot of time on his customs, so if you like what you see and you're feeling generous REP TKWINK HERE.

--
Jealous of Lex Luthor’s new toy, the Everyman Project, the Toyman secretly creates his own metahuman laboratory – Santa’s Workshop. For weeks, he trawls Metropolis for ‘volunteers’ – the desperate, the greedy, the disposed, the just-plain-crazy.
Now, after several hastily-buried ‘design flaws’, he has created and equipped his very own team of super-powered villains, ready to wreak toy-themed chaos. And what better time of year than Christmas? Get ready for the most dangerous toys this side of China…
Rebound– Billy Reed’s dream of a college basketball scholarship was derailed after he was injured in an auto accident and charged with drunk driving. Desperate to get back into the game, Billy jumped at the Toyman’s offer to be center court again – this time as a human basketball.
Barbara – Don’t call her Barbie! When Barbara Stacy’s steroid use got her barred from competing as a female body builder, she found a new calling – as Toyman’s muscle. His ‘treatments’ make her stronger than ever, and twice as mean. Just look what she did to that poor robot!
Silver Skater – Anthony Bird was the leader of gang of skate punks when a skirmish left him dying on the street with a knife in the gut. Toyman’s timely invention saved his life – at a price. He cannot live without his med-suit but he is faster than ever thanks to a high-tech skateboard designed by Toyman himself.
Doh-Boy– Crushed by his rejection by the Everyman Project, Joe McVicker was one of Toyman’s first recruits. Now Joe has more power than he ever dreamed. As a creature of living Play-Doh, he may be non-toxic but he is definitely dangerous.
Sarge– In and out of VA hospitals since the first Gulf War, Sergeant Kirk Killian was sleeping on the cold streets of Metropolis when the Toyman offered him a chance to get back in the field. Encased in ‘bio-plastic armor’ and sporting enough weaponry for an entire squad, the Sarge serves as Toyman’s second-in-command.
Mr. Snuggles– Teddy ‘Bear’ Boyd was an out-an-out psychopath, wanted for the brutal murders of three prostitutes when Toyman made his acquaintance. Now with his animal side fully unleashed, Teddy is a lightning-quick bundle of fangs and claws, all wrapped up in an adorable bow-tie.
With a couple of Toyman’s toy planes in support, this team is ready to kick Santa in his sack.
Toyman - 50
Rebound (JL Bouncing Boy)- 50
Barbara (Origin Rookie Knockout)- 70
Silver Skater (SN Rookie Night Thrasher) - 37
Doh-Boy (Sinister Experience Hydroman) - 57
Sarge (Easy Co. Soldier on SN Veteran Kree Colonel base) - 41
Mr. Snuggles (AW Experienced Wendigo) - 61
Remote-Controlled Toy Plane (CD Rookie Fire) x 2 - 34
400 pts
SCENARIO RULES:
Each team is a 400 point build, unrestricted, no BFC’s.
Each map has a ‘Bad Santa’ figure at the middle. After the second player’s turn, a single six sided die determines who controls Santa. 1-2 = first player / 3-4 = no one controls him / 5-6 = second player. Santa then becomes friendly to the player who controls him until the next die roll.
Santa has 12 clicks. He can be hurt and even KO’d and with each click of damage, his stats drop by a point. He begins with 20 Speed (Flight symbol) with Hypersonic Speed, 20 Defense with Impervious, and 0 Damage with Outwit. He has Incapacitate but no Attack Value - he always hits! With a 10 range and 2 targets, that can be nasty. Santa is immune to Outwit, Incapacitate and can act every turn with no pushing damage. For all this, Santa is worth 200 points if KO’d. As you can imagine, this rarely happens.
If a player loses control of Bad Santa, either to the opposing player or to a neutral die roll, that player gets a ‘present’. This special token acts like In Contact with Oracle. All figures on your team must get a present before a piece can be given a second present. With nine figures on my team, this never happened.
Finally, a Winter Wonderland Battlefield condition was in play as well – a combination of Bright Lights and Astral Plane.
ROUND 1: Christmas in Outer Space

The Space Map was an early Christmas present. I immediately moved into space, cutting the range from KC GL who was on the temple side of the map, using the Forbush Men as a shield. Here’s where an Outwitting Giant comes in handy – positioning my Wildcards and Barbara (Knockout), I had two Outwits, and Toyman was peering over the Forbush Shield and using his Outwit to nix Ranged Combat Expert.
In a couple rounds, I had moved to the edge of the temple and based GL with a Remote Controlled Airplane (Green Flame). GL had moved to the raised terrain at the temple and now I had two Outwits on him, turning off Running Shot or Willpower now that he couldn’t fire out of range. My opponent moved Batman in to attack and he ended up swarmed – Barbara (Knockout) charged him, Sarge (Kree Colonel) got a hit, his Close Combat Reflexes Outwitted and leaving him vulnerable.
All this was moving pretty slow as we were both pondering positioning and locations. Batman went down about the time GL vaporized the Green Flame plane. Doh-Boy (Hydroman) had taken a hit from Batman and was near his last click, so he valiantly sacrificed himself to move around up the temple stairs and base GL from behind, getting KO’d soon after. Rebound charged a Forbush Man, hit, and carried Barbara in to base Dream Girl. Thanks to Sidekick, Super Senses and Prob Control, plus ‘presents’ that gave both DG and GL the equivilant to In Contact with Oracle, Dream Girl was going to be a tough nut to crack. And indeed, time ran out without Green Lantern or Dream Girl losing a click.
Santa played a fairly equal role for both team – a couple Incaps that lead to pushing damage on me, a couple key Outwits on my opponent, but generally he did not play a crucial role.
So in the end, I won having swapped only 5 points with my opponent. He took down 74 points (Doh-Boy and an airplane) and I got Bats and Forbush Man (79 points). But a win is a win.

This was on the JL dock map. Playing cautiously, I moved the bulk of the group up a bit and my opponent moved Box and Shang Chi to a rooftop, leaving Mandarin as a long distance sniper with Scarlet Witch in support. Mandarin tagged Barbara (Knockout) early. I moved Sarge and Doh-Boy up to the same roof and moved the rest of the team out of sight of Mandarin behind the building (Santa was mine and I Incapped Mandarin and SW to keep them out of things). Toyman peered up over the roof and Outwitted Shang Chi’s CCE. So John took Box and Shang Chi off the roof and based Toyman and the other figures there.
From that point it was a matter of concentrating fire. With so many figures, most of which had range or were now based with the Box and Shang Chi, I could attempt a few attacks every turn without pushing. So Outwitting Super Senses on Shang Chi, I hit him until he went down, then turned on Box (who failed a breakaway at one point) and Outwitted his defenses until he, too, fell (Flurries from Mr. Snuggles, ranged shots from the airplanes and Hydroman on the nearby rooftop, Charges from Barbara and Rebound, even a pop from Silver Skater). While all this was happening, a remote controlled airplane (Green Flame) made its way over to base Mandarin and keep him busy (he ended up missing two rolls in a row, only needing a four to hit, further slowing him down).
This all took about three rounds and when I had Santa, he pinned down Mandarin and SW with Incap and when John had him, he would Incap Rebound and Barbara, eventually KO’ing Barbara with an Incap push on her last click.
Then we all moved to the middle pier of the map to face off. Mr. Snuggles ended up based with Mandarin who took him down to his last click. A Barrier from Doh-Boy forced Scarlet Witch to reposition, and Rebound went to base her. More positioning with the remaining plane and Sarge had a line of fire on Mandarin. All my figures had taken damage, mostly from Thunderbolted Mystics and pushing, and Sarge was on his third click, with RCE. He pushed and hit Mandarin with a critical hit for four clicks and knockback. Mr. Snuggles regens up 4 clicks, someone (can’t remember) pops Mandarin for his last click and Scarlet Witch succumbs having eventually lost Prob Control to Incaps and a successful hit from Rebound.
Santa was very helpful in this one but once again, a pseudo-swarm team with up to three Outwits at a time (four if Santa is helping) is hard to counter with 3 or 4 figures, no matter how good they are.

With no offense to my other opponents, Jeremy is a great opponent who I rarely (if ever) beat, playing his favorite team – the X-men. And Gambit is his new favorite X-Man. Jeremy is the only player I am aware of to have KO’d Santa in the tournament.
We end up on the Space Map again, with my team first. I start cautiously again, clustering in space on the far side of the map (my opponent placed the Aerial Baffler on the right side of the board and, unable to manage 3 damage at range, I moved left). Jeremy brings Storm with the Prof out to near the middle of the map, then TK’s Gambit to the asteroid nearest my group, then brings Marvel Girl out to join the others, carried by SW. 8 of my 9 figures are grouped within range of Gambit and he tosses out a double target Energy Explosion into the heart of my formation. Critical hit. My team goes flying like bowling pins. Everyone hurt for at least a click, most for more. The group is shattered.
I pull things back together a bit and fly Rebound in on the Professor, carrying Barbara. Silver Skater, Doh-Boy and Toyman try to take on Gambit. Mr. Snuggles starts to move in too, but with Battle Fury, he has to move the hard way (he’ll be whittled away and not end up a factor in the game). Jeremy again combines luck with excellent strategy. He TK’s Cyclops back two squares from the group of X-men at the center of the map to shoot Barbara. It’s an easy roll, a 5 or 6, but he misses twice, having positioned himself now in SW’s line of sight for the Prob Control. But he rolls a third time with the Theme Prob, giving the token to SW, and this time he hits, KO’ing Barbara.
Sarge gets some retribution by hitting his own EE on the X-men group, damaging all of them. He goes down soon after (shot with a Perplexed RCE from Storm) as does the airplane backing him up. And nearby, Doh-Boy, now sharing Toyman’s Attack Value and getting a boost from his Perplex, pops Gambit, as does one of the remote controlled airplanes. Silver Skater tries to finish him and get KO’ed in the attempt.
Now it’s all falling apart. Rebound is deflated with a punch from the Professor. A round or two later and Cyclops throws his own Energy Explosion at the little group of airplane, Toyman and Doh-Boy. You guessed it – critical hit.
In the end, all I had left was one of the Green Flame airplanes on its last click. With no tokens on it, I move it to the one place on the board safe from an Incap from Santa (in Jeremy’s control this round). It also happens to be in line to shoot Gambit, also on his last click, if I can make it to my next turn and go out shooting. Jeremy, in a ‘what the heck’ move, sends Santa on an HSS swoop and tries for a critical hit on the airplane, the only way Santa can do damage. And gets it. Game over. Every X-man hurt, some severely, but none KO’ed and Toyman’s Toy Team laying strewn around the map like unwanted presents on Christmas afternoon.
I did get Fellowship in the end, and that was cool. Everyone certainly liked the team. But the best part was being able to be extremely competitive with them in my favorite event of the year.
Merry Christmas everyone.
That sounds like a really fun time all around. Next week we'll return to our regularly scheduled format. In the meantime, please feel free to post any special Holiday theme teams or scenarios you've experienced below!

Fantastic work! I wish I had the creativity to mod figs like that.
Now we need some opponents for them though.
Maybe . . .
Icecicle turned into Jack Frost
Lockjaw as Rudolph
Chemo turned to Frosty the snowman
Mytxiplyk as an elf
Zaurial as a Christmas Angel
Emperor Joker (x3) as the 3 Wisemen
6th Place: WWE National Qualifier Finals, June 2008
Four Points Gaming Club: South
WWE National Qualifier Finals, June 2008, all four members of Four Points Gaming Club make the Top 8!
I gotta ask - where do you dig up a comic book cover like that?
I modded that cover as well. It is the original Avengers cover but with St. Nick in the place of Loki. It was my Christmas card to my fellow clixers at my local venue last year.
Thanks to anonym0use for highlighting Toyman's Toy Team. I really enjoyed making them and playing them. Hope y'all like 'em too.
