I think this movie is really underrated, David Fincher (of Fight Club and Seven fame) does a good job creating a very cool atmosphere, for Ridley to continue her alien beatdown.
It seemed like a bit of a let down for many at the time because Aliens was so fantastic, but I think if you watch it again now, you will find that it is a lot better than you remember.
Ive actually got to agree with you, as Alien3 may not have been Alien or Aliens calibre (each of them Classics in their genre, mind you), but its still a pretty darn good movie really. Very dark (both in visual and atmosphere), it went back to the first film of one Alien against many much lesser capable and equipped victims, only this time Ripley was there to lend her expertise and help save the day (even though, only ONE of the men in this colony survived, and chances are he didn’t last too much longer really). This was also the first film to create the mythos of the Alien taking a partial form of whatever the host was (being a dog in this one, making it sleeker, faster and more vicious), something that has become an interesting addition to the Alien cannon. The CGI was OK by me, they did a mixture of that and live action, so all in all the effects were just fine. Didn’t love the fact that Hicks was killed off so casually, but hey, Charles S. Dutton was a nice substitute all the same. In the end, Alien3 may not be a classic sci fi/horror movie, but its hardly bad watching, and well worth doing so in my book.
ALIEN3 – 8 / 10

Its a good movie and an interesting change up from the last (which really is one of the hallmarks of the series) but also suffers in comparison due to the fact that its two predecessors are classics.
I think my only real hatred of this movie is in the carpy way they killed off the rest of the survivors of Aliens. I really like what they did with the movie and it wouldn't really have worked with Newt and Hicks alive but I really liked those characters and having them die like that was a let down.

I agree wholeheartedly, though like you, I realize the story wouldnt have worked with Newt and Hicks, so they unfortunately had to go.

I saw it in the theatre when it was released and left with such a sour taste in my mouth.... I don't rmeember I just remember thinking: this is dreck. 10+ year later and I still have bad memories of it... and the bad taste in my mouth has only dminished a touch... and it is a very light touch.
Yes, but you're a surrealist! I'm a normal guy!
Gil Zoo Crew or bust!
Its really not half bad at all (though if you saw it when you were young, loving Aliens beforehand, I might see how you would be disappointed in the way they treated the other survivors in this one). Try it out sometime as an adult, and see if you like it a bit more now (as its really quite good, though it helps a bit too look at it as its own thing, and his Part 3 of the Alien saga)

Thinking back on this film, there's not much that I dislike about it.
As it has been stated, what detracts from this film is that the other two were classics of their respective genres.
I think there is a lot going for this film. It basically is the third comparison of man to the alien. In the first, it is the normal, unassuming person compared to the Alien. In the second, it is the tough-as-nails fighter armed to the teeth and ready for combat.
For Alien 3, you already have the average man falling to this living, breathing weapon. Man in all his great skills, mastering of technology, and strength has no chance against the alien. Where do you go? The answer: the lowest depths man can go. Prisoners. Rapists, zealots sealed in their own private hells. Can these men that resemble monsters match the cunning beast that is bred for survival?
Ultimately, we have Ripley who survives all this because she is not the average man, she is not man at its height or its lowest. She is a woman living in a man's world.
I think Alien 3 did a fine job of capturing this idea. However, it is a bit slow-building and probably best viewed at one's leisure. And then you have the complete disassociation from the prior movie: everyone dies except Ripley. Definite telling of deus ex machina at work.
Oh well. Better than Alien Resurrection. The only thing going great for that movie was Ron Pearlman, essentially.
Vote: 7.2 out of ten.
Eh . . .

Alien 3 is the first movie I was ever tempted to just walk out on because it was so bad. I had very high hopes for this film. I loved the first two movies, and was a huge fan of the Dark Horse Comics sequels. Sadly, my hopes were dashed from the start. First, they retcon Aliens so that the Queen Alien lays a completely mature egg somehow, despite the fact that she left all of the plumbing to do that behind on LV-426. Next, they took all of my emotional investment for the characters that survived Aliens and flushed them down the toilet. Then, they dump Ripley into a situation full of totally unlikable characters and expect me to consider them the "good guys" of the story. At that point, I didn't even care if Ripley lived or died. I was so disgusted that Weaver would agree to participate in a movie using that script that it just didn't matter to me one way or the other. I stuck it out, constantly hoping that something would happen that would turn things around, but it never did. By the time it was over, I was wishing I'd listened to my first instincts and walked out when I was first inclined to do so.
Eh, I thought it was a fun, action, horror flick. Even if it did throw out much to most of what the previous film did, it was still an enjoyable movie of its genre to me all the same (certainly not in the realm of the worst films Ive EVER seen, or close to it, in my book).
