HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
Often held up as better than the first, I just don't see it. The "doctor" was a poor character and not scary. The Cenobites went from scary, otherworldly entities to chumps. The Cenobite "God" was interesting but not enough to hold the premise. It also paved the way for the inevitable slew of sub par sequels. I give it a 3.
Well I am one of those that thinks Hellbound is better overall than Hellraiser (which I also liked, and own both on DVD). More gore, better effects and music, and a partial explaining of the original story (which left a lot of questions), while staying true to its original movie. The Cenobites weren’t chumps, they were fleshed out to show their origins, that they were once human beings (which even they didn’t know) who for some reason or another came upon the puzzle box and were then transformed into the dreaded agents of Hell. I took their losing to the Doctor Cenobite (who was a pretty cool/demented character ) at the end so easily was that the original 4 demons has taken Kristys side, regaining their human emotions, and therefore their boss (Leviathan) took away much/most of their powers, replacing them with the better fit/more evil Dr. Cenobite (not sure why Pinhead came back in HR3 really). All in all this was a well made sequel that took what the first one was and went further with it, in a direction I personally liked quite a bit.
Hellbound: Hellraiser II – 8 / 10

For remaining true to the Hellraiser series and having a decent enough story telling, I'll give it a 7. The original Hellraiser is so much better than this one, but 2 has its moments.
3 was awful with some ridiculous looking cenobites (CDs? Ugh.) 4 was not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I just watched 5 today, actually. I thought it would have been better as a psycho thriller and not a Hellraiser movie.
So anyway, one of the things about 2 that I really enjoyed was the self-realization of the cenobites. One of the things that I hated was their demise. The doctor also didn't seem to fit after he was transformed. He was too... out there.
I think thats why Leviathan killed the Dr., and I assume later brought back Pinhead, newer didnt necessarily mean better.
Personally, I really enjoyed both 1 and 2, though to me 2 was the overall better and better made film.
Hellraiser has been a great series, and I'm a little angry with myself for not checking it out sooner than I have.
I've noticed that none of the cenobites that are in the later films (with the exception of Pinhead) are as good as the originals.
I liked this one better than the first but in all honesty, not by a whole lot. That Doctor character I have mixed emotions for. On one hand, it was bad enough having to deal with the cenobites and now you had to deal with him. On the other hand, he was way to pompous for me to actually like him. I thought it was kind of cool that the cenobites realized they were once human who just got shafted in the worst way. When I looked back at it, an ok movie for me.
7/10. Not a true fan of horror movies, I have more of a passing interest in them. That said, Pinhead is just one of those cinematic villains where you truly cringed at the sight of him.
I only saw this once.... and I think it was as a sequel to #1 and thinking it was better but not memorably better.... but not good enough to make me want to see any of the sequels after it.... 6 because I don't remember it as geat but not bad either.
Yes, but you're a surrealist! I'm a normal guy!
