I love George A. Romero and I am willing to forgive a lot when it comes to his films, but lets be honest this one is not very good. It is an interesting thought, it was the first zombie movie that saw the scientists trying to understand the zombies and find a cure, and it was an interesting look at what life would be like years after the outbreak, but still it is a bad movie.
Zombies almost play a back seat to army versus science and military versus humanity (which likely inspired the last half of 28 days later). The acting is so bad it's funny and the actions of the characters largely don't make any sense, you just find yourself audibly saying "what?" or "come on" way too often.
It probably gets a higher rating than it deserves from me because I like zombies, Romero and B-movies a lot.
This is the lowest of the 4 movies in the series (haven't seen "Diary" yet, and it's a "new" story anyway). Romero still has some interesting ideas, just not the actors or dialogue to pull it off. The movie still has some well done moments and some great visuals.
Personally, I kinda liked Day Of The Dead, more than Land for sure, and even on the level of the classic Night (which while iconic for its time, doesnt hold up nearly so well over time for me). It was an interesting and natural progression of the previous films, from a few zombies, to many, to a massive amount, going not only into fighting and running, but holding your ground and trying to find a cure scientifically as well. Sure it had its dopey moments, and I didnt love Bud (I think that was the trained zombies name), but just for cool 80s zombie action, and real visual gore, I enjoyed this movie.
Day Of The Dead - 7.50 / 10

The original (1985) was the least "thought-provoking" of Romero's Zombie Trilogy. It did have the best action sequences/gore of the series, but much of its potential was wasted on downsizing the original script/cast of characters because of budgetary constraints (It would have been closer to a combination of "Resident Evil: Extinction" and "Land of the Dead," instead of "Panic Room" with zombies). I still watch it on a regular basis, despite its flaws. "Choke on 'em!" 6/10
The new version (2008) is related by name only. It borrows a few elements from the original, but those have been incorporated in most of the zombie/outbreak-type movies that have come out in the past decade. Bad acting, REALLY bad CGI (I miss the good old days of animatronics and latex), and wasted performances by Ving Rhames and Mena Suvari. It's suitable for "killing" time (pun intended) on a rainy day, but is easily the worst of any recent zombie movie, due to its unnecessarily stereotypical portrayal of some of the characters, and the rushed/"convenient" ending. Decent set-up, bad execution. 2/10.
Well the one we would be talking about would be the one whose trailer you can see by clicking the Movie Title on Post 1 above. (but its nice to know I should Stay Away from the DotD remake)

Not bad. Certainly the least of the original 3 and probably second from the bottom if including Land and Diary (Diary is somewhere between Night and Dawn).
Certainly the most bleak with lots of gore and zombies, but reeks of the 80's with music style. Also doesn't quite fit with Diary's social commentary, Dawn's social commentary, or Night's social commentary. Romero's best zombie movies ask the question: Are we worth saving? Day is a lot like Land where they compare the zombies to humans. That's not a bad theme to draw upon, but Romero tries to pound it into our heads that they are just like us, when it should be that we are just like them (yes, there is a difference folks).
6.83 out of ten.
