One of the classics, the host of ABC's Wide World of Sports Jim McKay; passed away of natural causes. He was 86 years old.
Before there was nightly Sportcenters; there was Wide World of Sports. It didn't matter the sport, they covered it. If you were a kid in the 60s or 70's and into sports, you wanted to make a segment of this show. And Jim was the main reason. He was incredible, and his coverage of the 1972 Munich hostage situation made him above and beyond any sports anchor.
He became a reporter par excellance.
RIP Jim. You were a great guy.
"Spanning the globe to bring you the constant variety of sport… the thrill of victory… and the agony of defeat… the human drama of athletic competition… This is ABC's Wide World of Sports!"
Even though Jim McKay has been commenting for a while, things still wont feel the same without him. My gosh, when I was younger I so looked forward to Wide World of Sports and the neat places he went to and interesting, offbeat sports he would report on. And I do remember like it was yesterday, the sad events of the 72 Olympics he reported on.
