Damage that is prevented is not dealt. So the short of it no. Your opponent is correct. Now if you are a paladin or an "armor" wearing class there are ways to stop the prevention. ie Lionheart Helm or Spread the Word. If you are Horde you can run Hur Shieldsmasher. Just some ideas to help you continue to wreck their face.
you are not dealing damage when you strike with a weapon. you are adding that weapon's attack value to your hero's attack for this combat. you don't deal damage until combat resolution, and at the damage prevention point if you use armor to prevent all damage that is scheduled, no damage is dealt and cruel hand of timmy does nothing.
