Hey guys Christian here and I’m back to share my Gen-con experience with you guys! Well, continentals did not go the way I was hoping at all, however I have a story to tell you about the block Dark Moon Faire I entered on Saturday. I played Kil’zin, and I have to be honest, it is just as fast in block as it is in standard. Our list was quite inferior compared to some due to the fact that we spent so much more time preparing for continentals as opposed to the Dark Moon Faire.
All in all I was pleased with this sideboard; however I probably would play with a third terror-pit girdle. It is much better than I originally gave it credit for.
That's the the list I played! I won most of my games on the back of Chill. It was by far my MVP, against the mirror match and against the druid archetype with the Hammer of the Naaru.
Round one I played against Desecrator. Both games were very close and I opted to hold chills knowing I could not win a race once it hit the table. The turns keeping the druid from attacking won me that round as my burn finished the job.
In the second round I went up against Alliance Ripped Combo. I must admit I deserved to lose game one because I read his hero and instead of realizing it was combo I thought he would be playing agro do to a damage dealing hero flip. So, as my punishment I open up with a hand that would crush any aggro deck: 2x vexmaster, lightning arc, Brok. As it turns out I realize he is playing combo as soon as he plays alchemists stone revealing A’dal. The hand I kept wasn’t fast enough to get the job done and I concede after he played ripped on an A’dal. Game two I kept a much better hand but was a few points short of the turn five kill which lead to another turn five ripped A’dal. So, at this point I’m 1-1, but I’m not too worried yet.
Round three comes along and it’s a mirror match! I decide to mulligan my opener aggressively digging for Aegis of the Vindicator. It turns out I wasn’t the only one playing it main! However, my hand did consist of 2x Minions of the shadow council which allowed be to burn my way through his turn six aegis he threw out at me. After sideboard I was very confident with my mirror match with 3x Bindings of Lightning’s reflexes. I keep an opener consisting of both Aegis and Bindings and win a fast game where his board was almost always superior to mine but he couldn’t force any damage through.
Rounds four and five panned out very similar to each other. I aggressively mulled for Aegis in two more mirror matches game one. Having those main ended up being a huge benefit to my deck as I lost both of these die rolls. It allowed me to lose game two and still have the benefit of playing first in game three. So, now I am sitting tight at 4-1, and feeling really good about this tournament.
Round six I play against a Mythen-Serpent Form deck, and man it had me worried. He got the early serpent form and with no main deck answer I had no choice but to let him eat my guys, however, the extra card draw from my quests allowed me to play some hasty guys and chilling his hero allowed me to keep them around few extra turns. Eventually I was able to burn him out for game one. The match-up becomes much easier after the crackling purges come in from the sideboard seeing as how serpent form and typhoon both are incredible against me. Game two ends very quickly as he is forced to play very defensive early and play myriam with no other guys in play. I crackling purge his turn six typhoon and win on my next turn.
Now sitting at 5-1 I’m quite discouraged that my breakers aren’t going so well. The guy that beat me from round two was 4-2 and most of my other breakers were X-2 which meant I was probably going to have to win out to make top eight.
Round seven I sit down against what I expected to be a very good match-up for me in “Black ice” Fizzlefreeze. He wins the die roll crushes me with an Antikron on one, a Xanata on two and a water elemental on three. I was able to kill all these guys on consecutive turns however another turn 4 water elemental was to much for my draw and I fell over after that. Game two was completely my fault. My sideboard for this match-up is 3x Terror Pit Girdles. It turned out he was easily ably to kill off my guys however I could have bought myself one extra turn if I had been preventing damage with it, but I just assumed it exhausted to prevent zero like the bindings when I should have just read the card!!
Now I have completely lost my desire to finish this tournament. It is one of the worst feelings finishing a tournament knowing you will probably not make the top eight.
So, in round eight I play against holy priest, and let me tell you it was a battle. Game one went to around turn twelve or so and I had to fight my way through big guy after big guy but was able to pull it out in the end. Game two my opponent played 3 Circle of Healings, but my draw was incredible in this game and each time after one was played I was able to deal most of that damage back to him.
With a finishing record of 6-2 I knew I would be in contention but miss it to tiebreakers. I finished in 11th place in my First Dark Moon Faire which my friends mentioned I should not complain about. However my goal was to top eight and without that I feel like I let the team down. Guys I don’t want you to worry, I will be at Dark Moon Faire New Jersey looking to redeem myself with a better finish there.
Some changes I would like to make to the deck are very simple. I would want Wysko in place of Marksman Glous; this allows me to play retainer’s blade which is an excellent card in the deck. The Deck is so explosive! Their were some games where I would deal twelve points or more in one turn, and the weapons with Wysko would only improve this result.
Until next time, I really hope you enjoyed reading my Kil’zin block tournament report.
