This is an exercise to hone my writing skills. As such, this will be subject to editing and possibly complete changes over the course of my writing it. The idea I have for this story isn't fully formed.
Chapter one: An Unusual Discovery.
Clark Savage Jr, finished unpacking all the supplies he'd brought from New York to his fortress hidden deep in the Arctic Circle not less then 100 miles from the North Pole. He and his crew had just wrapped up an important case for the U.S. government in which he'd foiled a ring of saboteurs and he was looking forward to a little down time; Clark Savage style, where he might do some exploring.
He'd flown in a team of Huskies and a sled because he was interested in exploring a valley not three miles from his fortress that he hadn't gotten around to inspecting yet.
He'd been experimenting with some ideas that might enable him to penetrate some of the secrets that might be hidden beneath those layers of ice and he felt that valley might be a good place to start. He suspected he might be able to access some caverns by taking advantage of the summer time when the weather wasn't quite as bad as it might be in other times of the year.
The dogs had all been fed and watered and were anxious to go out and do the things they'd been bred for. Clark ( known as Doc by his friends, relatives and pretty much the entire Western civilization) had personally inspected each dog and determined that each one was in the prime of health and would be the best ones to handle the potential weather extremes they'd be facing. Doc had even applied some animal psychology theories he'd been contemplating that suggested that each dog had the perfect temperament for the tasks that Doc had in mind for them. His crew (Ham and Renny especially) thought his theories about animal psychology were a bit silly but they knew better then to openly scoff at Doc's ideas as they'd been made to look foolish more then once when they'd doubted him.
Doc hitched the team up to the sled, double checked to be sure he'd brought his devices he'd concocted to help him penetrate the ice and began driving the team toward the valley.

It took him about forty minutes to reach the valley but the valley was huge and he used up another thirty reaching a section of the valley that looked like it would have what he was looking for.
When he constructed his fortress he came to the conclusion that the island he chose to build on probably had a large network of caverns that were hidden beneath the layers of ice. He'd noted a section of valley that seemed to be protected a little by configurations of rock that with a little hard work might be penetrated and enable him access to the caverns during a flyby.
Once he approached the area he'd chosen he unhitched the huskie team and set to work with his prototype device that could tell him whether there was solid rock behind the layers of ice or if there was potential access to the caverns. After two hours of negative readings he finally found a section that looked like it might be promising.
He set to work. He had to work carefully because he didn't want to trigger an avalanche that could bury him. Carefully he dug the snow away until he came to ice barriers that he needed to broach. With torches he carefully melted the ice away. It was painstaking work but Doc's iron will enabled him to carry on. Slowly the ice melted away and became less opaque.
Finally he reached a point where he could peer into the cavern somewhat by shining his flash through. he could see a small chamber that looked like it might open into a larger chamber about thirty feet in. After a half hour more he'd managed to create an opening that would allow him to enter his six foot six inch frame.
Once inside he looked around the chamber. Amazingly, he discovered animal bones scattered around the chamber. They were mostly broken as if something had snapped them to reach the marrow. The bones looked mostly to be seal bones but some bones actually looked as if they came from adult polar bears. Some bones didn't appear to be that old. Doc didn't realise it but a trilling sound had risen. His mind was working overtime and it was the subconscious sound he would make when he was in deep thought. He stood and looked around. there was an area of the cavern that was obscured by a cavern wall as if it might be a small cul de sac or something. He walked around to investigate and was surprised to see a heavy looking large metal door. His trilling became louder.

The door was extremely large and heavy and seemed to be made from a metal that Doc couldn't readily identify. This bothered him because he was sure he was completely familiar with all the metals known on the periodic table. The door seemed like it was designed to be impregnable and even Doc might have been daunted except for one thing, something had obviously been able to force the door open before. As strong as the metal appeared to be, someone or some thing had been able to force the door open before. Large indentations on the edge of the door suggested that a creature very powerful had pried a hand hold to gain egress.
Doc had large powerful hands but the hands that did this seemed to be even larger. Never the less, Doc was able to get a grip using the indentures made by the creature and force the door open himself. The door was so heavy he doubted even his colleague Andrew Blodgett Mayfair, otherwise known as Monk could have opened it by himself.
While Doc had been examining the cavern his team of huskies had filtered in to explore and escape the cold arctic winds. Once Doc finally forced the door completely open they were assaulted by a myriad of strange and unsettling odors. The dogs demeanor instantly changed as they began to cower and whimper, most with their tails tucked between their legs. Doc also struggled with the unpleasant odors for a second as his keen sense of smell attempted to adjust.
I apologize if anybody has been reading this and is wondering when I'll get on with this. There's some research I want to do that I haven't accomplished in order to continue.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
Doc entered the chamber. The most amazing thing in Doc's eyes were the bizarre mushroomlike growths that lined the walls in each direction that had a faint glow virtually guaranteeing a slight visibility no matter which direction Doc chose to go! The other amazing thing about the chamber he'd entered was the temperature had a temperature that was much too comfortable for the region.
He knew that the mysteries presented by this Chamber would keep him preoccupied for a long time. The thing that amazed him was the tremendous scale to which these chambers were made.
Despite Doc being a large man the chambers seemed to be designed for creatures that towered even over him .
Another thing that gave him pause was that the chamber had exits that shot off to his left, right and directly ahead. There was nothing else of distinction for the chamber other then it seemed to obviously be made by intelligent life .

Stealthily he eased down the left passage. This was an incredible discovery and he meant to learn everything he could about his find as quickly as possible. The scientist in him could barely contain his excitement.
Occasionally he detected signs that this passage may have seen some use recently despite the general air of antiquity that dominated the oveall impression of the place. He thought of the broken bones he'd seen in the cave entrance that he was certain belonged to polar bears that roamed the ice on the outside. Whatever could do that to a grown polar bear must be formidable indeed.
Although Doc was supremely confident in his ability, part of him was glad that he was equipped with paraphenalia that would give him an edge in any potential confrontation.

I'm glad you found this and brought it back, RE. I'll be following from now on.
The hat trick is getting me off my lazy butt to keep it up.

Instincts suggested he arm himself. He equipped himself with a Walther PPK specifically designed to handle his mercy bullets.
Doc had never been comfortable with the idea of being responsible for the termination of life and he wasn't going to start now. One thing that Clark Savage Senior had instilled in him, was that all life was valuable.
No matter what the future held, he knew there would be no way that anyone would accuse Clark Savage Jr of a callous disregard of human life.
His great regret was that his good friend, Monk Mayfair couldn't quite see it his way. Still, he had large hope that he could sway Monk to see it the way he did.
As he crept along the passageway, he noticed that the incandescent mushrooms seemed to be getting sparser. The further he got, the harder his visibility.
Knowing that somewhere in here lurked something or someone that had power that potentially dwarfed even his own actually gave him (if not a sense of fear) a sense of nervouness bordering on trepidation. He knew even he couldn't overcome a full grown polar bear unaided and from all appearances, someone or some thing did exactly that.
Indicators he'd seen told him that there was something tremendous that even a man as capable as he was, shouldn't ignore. Not only that but his keen senses made it clear that there might be more out there then just the powerful adversary he suspected he might be trailing.

The further he advanced down the corridor the more he had to watch himself to keep from making the peculiar trilling noise he often made subconsciously when he was wrapped up in an enigma. The place was a source of fascination for him and he was nearly overwhelmed with scientific curiousity. He knew there was potential imminent danger and he couldn't afford distractions.
He was beginning to think that he should have brought some of his crew to allow them to exercise their various areas of expertise.Johnny would be especially useful in his capacity as both an archeologist and geologist.
As he moved along he detected danker odors that were becoming stronger as he advanced. Some odors were unfamiliar as well as unpleasant.
He also thought he could hear faint noises that sounded like low voices gibbering. Sometimes he thought he heard shuffling noises.

The noises seemed to be getting closer. His natural curiousity and confidence in his ability drove him forward to investigate despite a slight chill that coursed through his normally imperturbable heart. Whatever he was hearing was unlike anything in his prior experience. A man of science, he was quick to disregard any notions of the supernatural whenever they were presented to him. His father's intense training given to him as a child helped him to overcome the natural penchant toward superstition that normal humans were prone to.
Still, he was never given toward overconfidence. He had a good grasp of his abilities and wasn't inclined toward overconfidence. He was aware of his limitations and strove daily to expand the boundaries they gave him.
He knew what he could do and doubted that there was another person on Earth who was better suited to overcome any obstacles or surprises that awaited him. He was driven by a desire to improve the human condition and knew that to accomplish that, he would need to be the best he could possibly be.
Hwever, even he could miscalculate. He needed to be on his guard. Ready for anything. The visibility had become so bad he was forced to pull out his flash. He shined it down the corridor hoping to catch a glimpse of the sources of the peculiar noises. As the light penetrated, he had a sense of something retreating.
He chose to move forward.
