Marvel Releases For The Week Of 3/1/2009 - 3/7/2009 (spoilers welcomed)
.
:cross-eye
Age Of Sentry #6 (OF 6) - The tale concludes with a story called...Death of the Sentry. One could only hope it were the real true ending.
Agents Of Atlas #2 - Norman Osborn is gaining ground and the Atlas Foundation is helping! With the onset of Dark Reign, changing things from the inside just got a lot harder for the Agents of Atlas! And to complicate things further, Temujin enters the mix.
Black Panther #2 - What happened to T'Challa? He got beat-up on. What happened in Latveria? T-Challa (hopefully) learned not to be so cocky.
Cable #12 - Through the course of the new series, Cable has been struggling to protect the first mutant child born since M-day. Now they're stuck in a completely barren future without food or water and if they are to survive, the child may have to become the protector.
Daredevil #116 - Predule to Return of the King - A New threat draws the Kingpin out of hiding. Kingpin Vs Jenny Craig ???
Deadpool #8 - Magnum Opus - Deadpool has had it and takes the fight straight to Norman Osborn. Easier said than done as Osborn unleashes his all-new Thunderbolts. The story continues in Thunderbolts.
Hulk - Broken Worlds #1 (OF 2) - Revisit some of the incarnations and alternate eras of the Hulk in this all-new mini. House of M, Hulk in the Microverse, the world of Future Imperfect, and the year 2099.
New Avengers - Reunion #1 (OF 4) - Mockingbird is back and she's hot on the trail of a mission that she has to see through. What is this surprising mission and will Clint Barton help her or try to stop her?
Secret Warriors #2 - The conclusion of issue #1 saw Fury uncover information that flew in the face of everything fans knew about S.H.I.E.L.D. in the Marvel universe. What does it mean? We may never truly know.
Ultimate Wolverine Vs Hulk #3 (OF 6) - Almost three years late. Last issue, the Hulk literally tore Wolverine in two. And that was just the beginning. Watch as Hulk gives Wolvie a choice of which leg of Wolvie's the Hulk will eat. Not a joke there.
War Of Kings #1 (OF 6) - The stage was set by X-men Rise and Fall of the Shi'ar Empire and Secret Invasion Inhumans, now the universe is about to explode as Black Bolt challenges Vulcan (possibly to an exciting game of thumb wrestling).
X-Men / Spider-Man #4 (OF 4)- If you were wondering how Sinister's plot would affect the present day, this is it! The X-men and Spider-man's efforts to stop him over the years were not enough and a dangerous new threat stands before them
Daredevil #116 - Predule to Return of the King - A New threat draws the Kingpin out of hiding.
Totally looking forward to this storyline. Hopefully Brubaker handles the Daredevil/Kingpin/Murdock/Fisk relationship well.

Yay! More Thunderbolts!

I've been looking forward to this since Secret Invasion ended.

Retcon alert! I was not impressed by the first issue or it's "shock" ending. It's like finding out that GI Joe works for Cobra or James Bond is a commie.

The great thing about this issue coming out now is that Yu's art has improved over the last 3 years. He's still not my favourite, but he definitely did a good job on Secret Invasion and it not looking as messy as his older work.

I'm getting worried that the Marvel cosmos that Abnett & Lanning are making so interesting would die and be forgotten if they don't do a yearly/bi-yearly event. First Annihilation, with its four lead-ins. Then Nova launched, and within its first year we had Annihilation: Conquest, with another 3 lead-ins, plus the Nova tie-in. Then GotG launched, and within its first year we get War of Kings, with three lead-ins to that. It's not as bad as a Secret Invasion size event, but it is a lot. Especially considering that when they're not doing an event, there's only Nova and GotG to collect.

More retcons! Kraven once worked for Mr. Sinister. Who took some of his DNA and has cloned a monster that hunts mutants, like a one-man Marauders. Kind of cool, but the last thing I wanted was more imitation Kravens. This'll be our 6th now? 5th?
Still, looks like a good week.
HeroClix needs more Goblin.
Acceptable in such forms as Green, Grey, Demo, Hob, Ultimate, and "Menace."

That Kraven got around. Now you're telling me he and Sinister had a child together.
Damn that Kraven's fertile loins.
X-men/Spiderman- what can I say.....Kraven gets a powerup as being his original huntery self with the added bonus of the orginal X-men's powers ala' Mimic. Just a clone of Kraven that calls himself Xraven and ends up fighting sinister......Is he good or bad? only time will tell (though I'm very certain a telepath cannot enter Kitty's mind while she is phased...I could be wrong though).
Deadpool 8- Basically a lead up to where he actually meets the Thunderbolts on the last page. Oh and He and his inner mind have apparently broken-up!
Cable- The girl is actually resourceful and gets the items needed for Cable to live on. Though he thinks she must have her powers, a quick test proves she does not. A few hops into the future and the time mechanism gets busted...this time on a populated world that isn't very popular......
War of Kings- Now thats how you crash a wedding!! Vulcan doesn't bother screwing the bridesmaids....no...not at all. Its much better to totally punk Blackbolt in front of his new followers. We have a few deaths: Night shade, Shape shifter and Atom smasher, possibly Ronan. Cho'd loses his hand and Nermani becomes the damsel in distress again. Blackbolt, beaten worse than rihanna on grammy night, decides to declare war through Medusa (who also recieved a royal ### beating). Can't wait to see what happens next!
Someone please tell me what happens in Black Panther! How did he get beat? What was Doom's characterization like? Has She-Panther actually made an appearance yet (I bet she graced the cover again either way).

Does anyone know if Agents of Atlas did actually make it out today? My supplier sent me my invoice and it wasn't on it and I'm trying to find out if he just Oops'ed or it wasn't released.
"Nobody important? That's amazing. You know, in 900 years of traveling time and space I've never met someone who wasn't important."

I've got AoA #2 in my stack. Just haven't read it yet.
"We're all in the gutter, but some of us are looking at the stars." -Wilde
War of Kings #1 - rated 9 "Ehs'tyl, by the way, is a Shi'ar word that means literally 'bursting cranium.' Headshot, if you will."
In case you hadn't already decided that Paul Pelletier is an outstanding comic book artist, I offer exhibit A: War of Kings. This is a fine looking comic book that illustrates the first strike in what will likely be a terrible war. Abnett & Lanning once again do a fine job laying down motives and personalities in a large cast of characters. Vulcan's aggressiveness and cruelty are exhibited as he initiates war between the Shi'ar and the Kree, with the most terrible of his assaults taking place on Hala, interrupting the wedding of Crystal and Ronan the Accuser. The Imperial Guard strike with horrendous precision and power, taking a prestigious prisoner and leaving a very angry royal family behind. This was a very exciting first issue.
Agents of Atlas #2 - rated 8 "And I enter the virtual bowels of Uranus."
This story flashes back and forth between the modern story, in which the AoA craft an alliance between the Atlas Foundation and H.A.M.M.E.R., and a story of the past, in which Woo's team investigates the mysterious sporadic appearances of a Russian fighter jet. The art chores are divided amongst two teams, one for the modern story, one for the 1950s story. While a lot of cool elements and scenes take place, I would have preferred a smoother transition between the flashbacks. Overall, though, it was still a fun comic which featured appearances by Temujin and the Grizzly.
Daredevil #116 - rated 8 "But happiness is always so fragile. The unhappy aren't raised knowing this, of course, and the happy simply forget."
I keep thinking I ought not to have liked this issue as much as I did. I have seen movies and comics (even comics featuring the Kingpin) in which a character who has abandoned a formerly criminal life gets dragged back in. I ought to be viewing this comic as cliche' and no doubt some will. Brubaker's simple language, though, and David Aja's beautiful art make this Wilson Fisk solo story a gem. Brubaker seems to be a master at taking the old stuff and doing it so well, in such a simple understated manner, that it comes off as new. This is the story of an expatriate's attempt to find peace, redemption, and love but whose plans are ultimately thwarted by ninjas.
Black Panther #2 - rated 7 "Your life is over, T'Challa. You have no idea how much it pleases me that I will be the one to personally end it."
This is a pretty decent comic. While I hadn't read last issue or most of the Hudlin run at all, I didn't feel confused by what was going on here. A dilemma has been established for the leaders of Wakanda, as T'Challa has been critically injured. The leaders are left with four problems - solving the mystery of who attacked T'Challa, watching out for further attacks on their nation, finding a temporary replacement, and finding a way to save their king. In a flashback, as revealed by the cover, the Black Panther was attacked by Dr. Doom, with some of the circumstances of that attack still unrevealed. I almost rated this title higher than a 7 until I started scouring it for a line worth quoting. While Hudlin's plotting appears to be better than I remember it, his dialogue is artless. The only lines of dialogue that go beyond mere statements of the situation, are the cliched threats issued back and forth between T'Challa and Dr. Doom. This seems to be an adequate superhero comic with a few interesting plotlines. Unfortunately for this title, I was reading Black Panther a decade ago, when I learned that I didn't have to settle for adequate.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
Someone please tell me what happens in Black Panther! How did he get beat? What was Doom's characterization like? Has She-Panther actually made an appearance yet (I bet she graced the cover again either way).
1. Black Panther vs. Dr. Doom
The full details of this battle are not yet completely known. We don't even know how the conflict really started or even where (although it looks like maybe Latveria). Here's what I can tell you (spoiler box for those who might still care):
Spoiler (Click in box to read)
Doom and a bunch of robots stand, blocking the Black Panther and the Dora Milaje from their Wakandan quinjet (or whatever it is called). Threats, threats. One Dora Milaje attacks Doom, remote intiating autopilot in the ship into opening fire on the robots. The other Dora Milaje tries to get her liege to safety, only to encounter a WHOLE bunch more robots. Weapons fire, explosions, yadda yadda. Single Dora Milaje doing surprisingly well against Doom. Other one gets T'Challa to the quinjet, but its a trap. The first Doom was a Doombot. The real Doom was hiding in Panther's ship - he says some mean things about razing Wakanda and unleashes a horrendous blast. Black Panther seems to be intentionally shielding his bodyguard from the blast. T'challa is down. One Milaje blasts the real Doom in the back with rocket launcher, distracting him so the other can carry Black Panther into the ship, managing to launch and escape. The rocket launcher one gets captured by Doom and opts to blow herself up rather than be tortured by Doom. Doom survives the blast just fine.
2. Doom's characterization
He seemed to be in character to me. I didn't notice anything that seemed particularly un-Doomlike.
3. She-Panther appearance?
No. Storm, though, as the Queen, makes the call on getting a new Black Panther trained, acknowledging the advice given to her, that Wakanda needs a Black Panther. Storm nominates Shuri, T'challa's sister, and sends her Zuri, who is to prepare her to meet and be judged by the Panther God.
...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
Well at least Zuri is in it. Nice to see Priest created Panther cast show up.
Figured it was the 'oh-so obvious' Shuri that was going to be the new BP though. Why bother with all the "Who is the New BP" promos if thats all they were going to do. Ugh.
I must admit, I was surprised you rated it a 7 though.
