I have a pretty big collection. Conventional wisdom is to leave them in the package because the value drops tremendously once they're open (or loose).
Personaly I just like the look of them, and I'm not collecting to pay for my retirement, so I usually open them and display them on shelves in various poses.
A word of warning about female action figures: their ankles are usually pretty thin, and if you display them loose, they tend to bend over time. I have a silver age Batgirl that "leans" now because of that.
thanks for the tips. right now I got them sealed hanging from thumbtacks on my wall. it looks pretty cool, but then I think to myself, I'm wasting $10 or more on each of them & there just hanging there, I mean there not like heroclix where you can pick up the figure ,admire the sculpt & still play a game with them! I mean it is pretty cool to look at the detail in my Infinite Crisis Superman, but besides that I just feel weird being 25 & having"Action Figures, Toys" hanging from a wall. You do not know what it feels like when I have company over & they see that!
I finally bought a house two years ago, and have been slowly opening my entire collection to display it. I hung my boxes on the walls for a long time, but I later needed that wall space for some shelves. After the shelves went up, my boxes were stacked in random places around the room. Talk about a pain! The clutter! ARRG!!!
Now I have a couple of shelves and the tops of my bookcases, and the top of an entertainment center to display my opened toys. My toys look so much cooler out of the box than they do in the box. I have more to open still, and will probably need more space eventually. I'm mostly buying high end vinyl now, or small blind box stuff now and then, so my collection isn't growing too rapidly any more.
I'm enjoying my collection a lot more now that I have started opening things. For me, that was the way to go.

I did collect Marvel Legends, but they are done so I am done until they start making 6" Marvel figures again. The smaller figures just don't look as good.
Ok, I caved. Yesterday I picked up the Marvel Univese Fury Files Silver Surfer and Wolverine Origins Deadpool (comic series). Those two looked pretty cool I admit. Thought about getting Black Panther but at $8 each for something so minimal, I'll have to be very selective. That's too much for me right now.
I collect A few. Mainly DC figures, I have An infinite Crisis Firestorm, A HUSH Harley Quinn, Dark Victory Scarecrow and Captain Gordon at the top of my collection along with A few others (some DC Classics and some Dark Knight figures and x-men as well). I recently picked up the deadpool (wolverine origins: comic deadpool) as well and picked up the gambit too. I like them, theres not too many deadpool figures out there and I was excited to find this one easily enough at K-mart. I wish I could collect more but it seems TPBs, Statues and Clix always seem to get in my way.

Who Cares? If it's what you like than it's what you like. Everyone has their odd thing that they feel slightly embarrassed about it, Weather (spelling? im tired) it be soap operas, celebrity magazine, dolls, clown statues, or figures. It does not matter. My girlfriends brothers are 25 and 30 and their apartments appear to be shrine museums to everything Star Wars, Marvel, DC, Indiana Jones and Simpsons. I love it
used to collect Masters of the Unvierse and Super Powers, now as a tourist I collect small "action figs": Heroclix.
I started to buy some of the DCU Classics line. They are 6" figures by the Four Horsemen. The line updates many of the old Superpowers figures. They even made the Wonder Twins! Right now I have Hawkman (m fav Superpower as a kid), Flash, Capt. Marvel, Blue Beetle and Booster Gold.

I saw those Wonder Twins and Gleek and they are INSIDE good!
