I just want to know: What are the best fight scenes in the Marvel universe? I collect a lot of the books (about 3-4 years), but don't really know of some of the coolest fights i might have missed. I base most on hearsay and was inspired by someone talking of a Wolverine vs. Gorgon match that sounded quite gruesome. This guy supposedly beat Wolvie with ease to the point of his guts hanging out and if it weren't for some Medusa inspired finishing move, he would have won.
Good fights I've seen:
Nova vs. Annihilus- the phrase "cat got your tongue" gets a remake as Nova actually does get Annihilus's tongue and everything attached to it!
Kane vs. Ravenger- Kane was forcefully trying to get her to join weapon X, but she was holding her own against him (using her telepathy to see his moves). It wasn't until his robotic side kept swinging that she was in trouble using this tactic and we get a funny cat and mouse game before she runs away.
BuckyCap vs. Tombstone- This was pretty funny. Taking out the serpent squad is one thing, but going toe to toe with a true Captain America villain could get you tossed out the window! Crossbones never looked so good until I read this (he pretty much looked like some dumb jock) and now I eagerly await more from the character.
Two Marvel Silver Age battles immediately come to mind -
Daredevil, totally outmatched by the Sub-Mariner (on a rampage against the surface world), takes him on to at least slow him down to help minimize civilian casualties.
He can't even hurt Namor (think 2 damage against Invuln or Imperv) and even though he avoids most of Namor's attacks (super-sense of course) he still takes quite a beating.
At the end of the issue (yes, great comic battles were typically completed in one issue back then!) Namor looks at his fallen opponent and leaves the city relatively untouched out of respect for his valiant opponent.
it was sweet! I think it was around issue 7 or 9. As a little kid reading that way back then I was inspired!
Another wonderful Silver Age battle was a Thing VS Hulk battle in Fantastic Four. It was part of a two issue story that concluded the following issue with "The Avengers Take Over!"
But in the first part, the Avengers aren't around and the Thing is the only member of the FF who isn't injured from the previous issue. The Hulk comes lumbering into (where else?) NYC and it's up to Ben to stop him!
A classic moment is on the GW bridge, when Ben wraps the Hulk up in suspension cable and is trying to hold on, knowing the Hulk is WAY stronger than he is. Of course, the madder Hulk gets, the stronger he gets, so it is only a matter of time before he busts loose and poor Ben gets stomped on!
But the fight was just so cool. Again, a hero outmatched but doing everything possible to keep the enemy from wrecking everything in sight!
There are many others, but these two just jumped right out of my "little kid" memory banks as great Silver Age battles!
Je Suis Charlie!
"Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can." John Wesley
Avengers 158 ( must be 30ys+ old )Wonderman vs vision.
Always been a fan of Wonderman since. " I'm in a class only thor can touch " awesome.
Spiderman ( black costume ) vs Firelord. Can't remember the number, I have it somewhere but where to start looking.
A real slugfest from start to finish.
I also loved the Avengers vs defenders story line. When they both sent team members after a piece of the eye.
Also
The bloodsport story (Wolverine 167-169) had some nice match-ups.
Mr x, Wolverine, puma, Taskmaster all involved in a kind of enter the dragon tournament.
Also liked wolverine vs carver (wloverine 157 )
And anything with Cyber in.
I only buy comics now that contain at least one good slugfest. For me thats what comics are about, hero's vs villians, hero's vs hero's etc.
I stopped buying loads of comics when it became more important to tell a story about aunt may than spiderman.
Too much talk talk and not enough walk walk for me these days.
Enjoyed Civil war though.

oh whoops marvel...ummm id say issue 12 of squadron supreme plus some of the fights in the original secret wars
Assuming you're referring to the original mini-series (although I can't recall off the top of my head if Straczynski's run ever made it to issue 12), I'd agree wholeheartedly. Not only was it a great fight in pure 'slugfest' terms, but it also has some fantastic character development moments (the one that jumps to mind is the bit with Doctor Spectrum, Firefox, and Mink).
I'd also add an earlier battle in the series, where Hyperion and the Hyperion doppleganger go toe to toe, with the original sacrificing his eyesight to destroy the imposter in a battle of heat vision versus heat vision.
With Daredevil being my favorite I would have to say #7 of the original run. It was the first time he appeared in the all red suit. He fought Namor who had come to destrpy the city. DD couldnt do much to him except slow Namor down. In the end DD is clutching to Namors ankle as he walks down the street. Seeing the courage DD displayed Namor left without destroying the city.
Another of my favorites and probably the best fight comic of all time in Marvel (my opinion) is Iron Fist#15. It was the last issue of the series. The issue before was Sabretooth's very first appearance in Marvel so were talking 30+ years ago if I remember right.
But anyway Iron Fist is on his own and is beating the X-men. Cyclops, Wolverine, Colossus, Storm and a few other members. They came after him searching for Sabretooth and I think it was Wolverine who attacked Iron Fist first. They were fighting from page 2 to the last page in that book. Sadly that was the series finale. But how could they have topped that? I do not know.
Cap vs Red Skull have included some really awesome and epic fights (I really enjoyed the multi issue one from Cap vol 3, where Skull is merged with the Cube). Proving Cap is the man.
Thor vs the Jorgumand Serpent when he was under Hela's curse.
Thor (In the Destroyer suit) vs all of Hel - Sweet to watch him just toss away Mjolnir at one point because he was so freakin' powerful it was a pointless weapon
Iron Man vs Titanium Man, where they fight live on camera, and Happy Hogan has to bring IM a whizbang to fight TM
Spider-Man vs the X-men in Secret Wars - You just got ownzored!
Thor vs Iron Man, post Civil War - not much of a fight, but I LOVED the total smack down
Oh, and one more.
Blazing Skull, any of his fights - from talking about looking down She Hulk's cleavage to singing little mermaid songs while bashing Atlanteans. Every fight he's been in is a total riot.
"Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad,
He's so bad, he mak'a me mad
Un-fun Dad, un-fun Dad
He's a real cad, Un-fun Dad"

Read Atomic Robo and Conan then. Lot's of action, but still good story telling.
Atomic Robo is great for rock solid action

that moment was the first one that jumped to my mind as well. and yes hyperion vs his imposter was great too. there's a reason this is my second favorite comic story of all time
