oh im a big fan of marvel 80s...its what i read as i grew up...and actually id say that the new universe wasn't all that bad...id also say that DP7 was easily the best book (imagine that, from mark gruenwald) and still one of my favorites to this day. star brand was also decent....luckily for me those were 2 of the 3 (spitfire was the third and got better near the end) i chose to try when it came out...and having sense checked out some of the others im glad those were the choices i had made...
I don't agree with you that the Avengers were going down in quality at the time of the X-Men/Titans crossover. If I remember correctly Roger Stern was writing the Avengers book in those days and he's way better then most of the people writing for Marvel today. It's just that both the X-Men and the Titans were juggernauts that couldn't be stopped so the crossover made serious sense $ wise.
Anyway I liked Marvel just fine until DC did Crisis, then it seemed like Marvel threw quality control completely out the window while DC seemed to step up and stop writing like we all had the emotional maturity of a five year old.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.

Actually Stern didn't come onto the Avengers until early 1983 with issue #227. Before that Shooter and Steven Grant were writing the title and it didn't seem to have much direction. Something which Stern fixed rather quickly and I agree he was way better than most Marvel today!

I don't have access to my old issues of the Avengers but Shooter was probably spreading himself pretty thin in those days but I do remember the Korvac/Michael storyline that blew me away. When Shooter was on his game he was pretty good. He just needed some kind of ego check. He did; after all, ruin Master of Kung Fu by alienating Doug Moench and driving him off to DC. Poor old Shang Chi hasn't been written well since.

Yeah, that was a great storyline, although a few years earlier I think, like 1978. Then Byrne/Micheline had a run, then Perez drew some issues, and then there was a bit of a void in the early 200s. Loved that Wundagore story with Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver and C'thon.

I think the 4 part x-men vs Avengers is one of my favorite comic stories of all time.

That was when Jim Shooter pissed everybody off at Marvel and they all defected to DC.
In fairness to DC, you can't look at stuff like the 1970's JSA stuff, or O'Neil's work on Batman and GL/GA and characterize it that way.

Yeah, not everything was that bad but Superman and Wonder Woman definitely benefited from a new point of view, at least until Dan Didio showed up.
