Clixcast Episode 31: Top 5 IronMan(s)!
This week Steve and Gudda talk about their picks for the top 5 IronMan
clix as well as talk about their feelings of the suggested demise of
the game that they once played.... a lot.
Another great one guys. God bless Gudda, all though your sneezes are no where close to my grandfather's, dad's, sister's, and dog's. Thank god it pasted me. Aaaaaaaaaaaachoooooooo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am very pleased with your Top 5. Hard to argue with your choices.
Great point on Centurian Iron Man. "Its all about patience".
You can't rush him into battle. He needs to stay on that first click to be most effective.
I like SI Iron Man but he is a big target. Everyone loves to try to take him down.
Top 5 Range combat experts?????
Winter Soldier would make my list just because of that first click.
Yellow Lantern might make my honorable list just because of the ridiculousness of the 0 damage.
Shield Snipers !!!!!
Others to look at:
Manticore: 10 range for 4 damage
IronWidow: makes her pushable
Starter Storm: 4 damage for 40 points with stealth
Firelord: still a beast
Nebula: that mastermind, 10 range and 11 attack is still hard to pass up
That's funny, people in my area are always really aggressive with Silver Centurion Iron Man. They put stunning blow on him and push round after round going down quickly but taking twice his point value with him.
'The game used to be built around many fundamental rules. But there are a number of figures that fly in the face of those rules. Their powers are too all encompassing, and too cheap.' -MegaLotusMan
First of all, I would like to say I appreciate the effort you obviously put into doing these podcasts. You're not paid and you've devoted a good amount of time on doing these. Of course, this is followed by a big "however" and what I say from here on out is my hope that you can make it a better podcast. You're fully welcome to call me an ###, ignore me, and keep doing things the way you've been doing them.
The podcasts are extremely long. I personally could only listen to about quarter of the last 3 podcasts all the while doing other stuff on my computer. I think the absolute maximum time should be about 30 minutes; although even 20 minutes might be long. Gudda needs ony to look at one of his favorite tv shows to know a good time for a two man discussion show, PTI. Just look at how many sports they're able to cover in their 30 minutes with commercials.
It really won't be too hard to cut down your time if you do some pretty simple things. Keep focus; no political discussions, no telling us how you feel about the death of Walter Cronkite, skip the information about the rough ride over to the apartment or whatever. Basically, stick to the topics that a podcast about HeroClix should be about, but if you absolutely must pontificate on unrelated subjects at least keep it brief.
Do a little extra planning. Do I really want/need to hear you guys doing searches on the internet about the characters in your top 5 countdown or about the origin of the "Raft"? Maybe bring the characters (and comics) with you or simply have the units section of the site up with your chosen 5 put into a force before you begin the show. Something as simple as a written list of topics you wish to cover along with the amount of time that you want to devote to each one would be handy, and a nearby clock to keep you moving.
Ideally, if you had time, you would edit the podcast before publishing it as well. Even with the conversational style you're doing now an occasional edit would be fine.
Anyway, I hope you take this in the vein it was meant. I only wish the best for your podcasts and I hope you continue to do them and improve them.
Dr. Briefcase (also, don't spend too much time in your next podcast ripping into me or keep it to under a minute )
First off thanks for your comments and suggestions. WE are always looking for ways to improve the podcast and make it more enjoyable...especially right now in these dark times. That being said we can only please some of the people most of the time and as someone once said, the need of the many outweigh the need of the few. (Hate the fact that it was Spock that said that)

WE don't bash people on the show usually. That became a running joke from a few episodes ago between Gudda and I...so no we won't call you names.

The first Podcasts were about 30 minutes long back in the day and they were done at the Game Store we played at...sort of a round table discussion with a lot of people there. Then I moved to Illinois and we had to do the podcast in another form. Almost all our listeners complained they were too short so we made them about 1hr sometimes a little over an hour. We usually try to stay in the hour range though. I actually like the short ones myself but I am trying to benefit the people who listen.

Nah. Again most people like the style we go with, so we will stick to it till the majority changes. They like the casual conversation feel of it.

We do, do some extra planning, sometimes. But we tend to stick to the freestyle conversation aspect of it because a lot of our listeners like the ComicShop/Gamestore talk feel of it. Sometimes things just come up...so we just look it up on the fly. We could script the whole show, but hell that'd be no fun.

No time, barely got time to put the intro in or even do the podcast sometimes. I have edited things out in the past. One of the podcasts I cut down 15 minutes cause we went on about something that was totally off subject and in bad taste.

I agree that you are just offering suggestions to greatly improve on our podcast. And I hear ya. I've tried to implement some of these things you have talked about, for Gudda and I though....they just never seem to work out, and when they get implemented technically difficulties from everywhere happen, so I take it as a sign that the Podcast is meant to be what it is and I am sticking to it. With 31 podcasts under our belt and only a few listeners have made improvement suggestions while many have commented that they like it the way it is, I think for now we will follow our current format.
Also I'd like to add there could be others out there who are silent, who aren't speaking up about not liking the Podcasting style we use. We can't do anything about it if we don't know you hate us. And on a side note, I did change my mic so people could hear me better, that was one of the only and longest running complaints we have had. Without knowing you dislike something we have to assume it is fine the way it is.

Again thanks for the time and effort you put into this critique. Everything you said I will definitely take under advisement and perhaps try to implement here and there again, Like a shorter podcast (But I think it's just not meant to be.) Sorry if they are too long to listen to for ya. I hate to lose a listener but to keep you I have to turn 10 others away...doesn't make sense. So start a petition or a bandwagon or something and perhaps other people will follow and some of these changes will get implemented. ^_^
I listened to the most recent podcast, I think I enjoyed the snarky reading/comments on the current 'realms threads the best!
As far as next week's top five...I think you did yourselves a disservice by focusing only on "restricted" figures, here is why:
So few of the restricted figures fall into the classic category of "RCE" figures! There are very few with a range of 10 (classic Bullseye), and not many that start with RCE or even keep it for very long.
Without scanning the Units section, I can only think of two figures that deserve to be on the top five 'restricted' list:
1) Winter Soldier: With RCE only on his top click, 10 range, starting stealth and toughness...it is hard to one-shot/alpha strike this figure to KO. His keywords play nice with support staff as well. One of the few figures with a single RCE click that I'd use Trick Shot on, since you are likely to do 20 points of damage to other figures with it.
2) Vet (IIRC) Starhawk: Also assign Trick Shot and at certain parts of the dial (including top click) you can get some quasi-Vet Icons Superman HSS ranged attacks.
There are no doubt a few good 2.007 "archer" types that either get RCE or something like it (Green Arrows? Merlyns?) but it's been a long time since we've had figures like Firelord, IC Bullseye or even CJ Starfire.
1) V Hawkeye (Fantastic Forces) 2) E Shield Sniper (Sinister) 3) V Hawkeye (Clobberin' Time) 4) V Scourge (Ultimates) 5) V Shield Sniper (Clobberin' Time)
I had heavily considered the Ultimates Hawkeye instead of the Clobberin' Time Version, but CT Hawkeye starts out mobile, and can be T-Bolted to the Ultimates TA for 5 points less than the Ultimates Vet. Or, better yet, T-Bolt him to the Hypertime TA to hold figures at range, the Sinister TA Syndicate to boost his AV, or the Defenders TA to raise his DV. The Batman Ally and Skrulls TA either hamper him mobility or rely too heavily on chance to protect him.
FF V Hawkeye is even more mobile and updated with better stats, and thus takes my #1 slot.
Ignoring V Scourge's starting click (which isn't shabby by any means), his first RCE click features Stealth and a 10 AV. He retains the RCE for the rest of the dial, and at 21 points, he was often a game breaker after Ultimates was released. After Fantastic Forces and LAMP, not so much.
Both SHIELD Snipers are great, although the Sinister version is the definitive stealthed harasser.
