Didn't Tony loose the ability to use the Extremis armor? I would think that would facilitate the need for a new suit, and I don't see Iron Man as being the kind of guy to simply re-design the inner workings of his suit.
Though I do agree the number of lights on it is a little extreme. I'd like the look better if it cut the four extra around his chest and two near his neck (and maybe the ones on his shoulder), but I'm thinking I could really come to like the design once I've given it time to set in.
I like that they are thinking slimmer and sleeker, to be more in line with current technological trends, but at the same time I miss the more classic designs. I don't hate this, but something seems off to me. Honestly, the gap between the shoulder piece and the collar piece is my biggest design complaint. If that was a solid red area of the suit, I think it would look better over all.
It makes sense. Technology should get more and more streamlined.
Tony even ponders this when he first encounters Extremis. His armor was getting bulky and it required more effort to control.
David Michelinie said in an interview that the bulkier, more complex look was the opposite of what he envisioned for the armor in the future. He stated he should look more and more like Silver Surfer, sleek with no unnecessary shoulder-pads, etc..
That's not to say his classic looks aren't cool, I'm sure we'll see a return to this at some point.

Reason: changed my editorials to opinions instead of 'facts', lol
I like it, I just wonder how long it will take writers to forget how powerful they initially made it.
Initially, Extremis put IM into a class where he could pound old armors into jelly, and beat the stuffing out of Sentry. Then it went back to being same ol' same ol' armor.
