...now, if we can just get Professor Pyg confirmed.
Part of that has to do with my decision to wait to see how Brightest Day turns out and then snag the graphic (sorry, but while I thought 52 was good, I was less impressed with Countdown and Trinity). Also, it leaves me money to play in tournaments (I'm on "new baby" budget)

For anyone not reading The Rise of Arsenal, I strongly suggest you do. It's a highly emotional and well written book that really nails the grief and heartache of loss.
I am not sure if I remember a greater single day release for DC comics. I am in comic reader's heaven today.
The Great Ten #7 - rated 4 out of 5 "And then, I slid apart like a deck of cards. The crowd in my head went their separate ways. I still remember those white eyebrows going up in utter surprise. It was almost worth being turned into a monster."
The spotlight on the Seven Deadly Brothers reveals what is likely to be the most thuggish member of the Great Ten. The Brothers, alongside the Accomplished Perfect Physician, continue their assault on scores of Hong Kong and Taiwanese mobsters, while their comrades bring an end to the Chinese god of death. I love this issue in the same way I have loved the 6 previous issues, the forward motion of the plot is seamlessly woven to a flashback origin that is dramatic and exciting. I was not wholly convinced of the downside of the curse revealed in the origin, but I consider that a minor flaw in the larger, colorful picture this series creates. The ruthlessness and pure combat-glee exhibited by the Brothers are certain to make them amongst the more popular of the Ten for those who read this story. This issue concludes by playing up the drama for next issue's spotlight - Shaolin Robot. Count me in.
Batman and Robin #12 - rated 5 out of 5 "I hope I can be a worthy one, mother."
Last issue's cliffhanger left Robin under the remote control of one of Dick Grayson's greatest foes,

, amidst an invasion of demonic thugs at the Wayne Family Cemetary. Even with the help of the mysterious Oberon Sexton, you knew this was going to be crazy and it delivered. But whoa, Nelly, it does not stop there. Secrets are uncovered beneath Wayne Manor. An invasion takes place at an Al Ghul secret HQ. The new King of Gotham puts on a glove, preparing for a siege. The face beneath a top hat is revealed. Here I will offer a challenge: for those who hate the Damian Wayne character, to those who have dismissed this comic on that basis alone, I challenge you to read this issue and try to maintain that position. I dare you.
Doom Patrol #10 - rated 5 out of 5 "D-D-Dammit, T-Trainor...yer cure's W-w-worse'n th' disease!"
Several times in the previous issues of this comic, I have noted Keith Giffen's tip of the hat to Grant Morrison's Doom Patrol run, but this issue feels like Giffen and Clark have summoned the ghost of that series and are forcing it to serve their will. I mean that, of course, in a good way. It is not just the inclusion of Crazy Jane, Danny the Bungalow, or

in this current storyline that gives that impression. The pure craziness of the porcelain darling girl's attack on Oolong Island, or the Humpty Dumpty visual showcase of her powers, or the breadth of what I am starting to suspect Jost Enterprises is really up to, but also the art. There are pages of this comic, in both figure drawing and panel to page composition that feel just like the work of Richard Case, Morrison's artist on Doom Patrol. Seeing this combined with the signature back-and-forth dialogue that is the hallmark of every Giffen comic makes me a very happy comic book reader. This series has hit its stride, and I'm talking Rita Farr-sized stride when I say that.
The Secret Six #21 - rated 5 out of 5 "All right. I don't know what normal people think. This is &^%$ed up, right?"
Catman's off the rails and his teammates need to bring him back down from the ledge. Please note that this is the Secret Six we are talking about. He's so far afield, that he needs the cooler heads of Rag Doll, Deadshot, and the daughter of Vandal Savage to bring him back down. Yeah, this is &^%%ed up all right. As he goes on a brutal hunt for the assumed killers of his child, Thomas Blake flashes back to secret childhood origins. Bane and Jeanette hire some new Sixers to replace the AWOL group, which includes two familiar faces from Simone's stint on the Atom series. Black Alice suffers a complication from stealing the powers of Dr. Occult, leading to a transformation that would have got the writer hung in effigy if said writer were not a female. Even still, you may be hearing about this one. Calfiore's art on this series continues to be the best I have ever seen from him. Across the board this is an amazing comic.
Brightest Day #1 - rated 3 out of 5 "So if this white lantern is the sword, where's King Arthur?"
The short version: This comic was OK, but kind of jumbled. I can tell already this maxi-series is structured like 52, which featured several different heroes, each involved in their own arcs, some of which connected briefly, but not all. My only problem with that, is that this first issue seems a little manically paced for my taste. Some of the story arcs seem to have potential, like the Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, and Hawks arcs seem pretty cool. The Firestorm arc, at this point, feels more like the beginning of an explanation rather than a story. The Deadman as invisible Pariah seems even more boring than that. As for the mystery that opens the series, I sure hope that wasn't suspense they were trying to build with that part, because it felt a whole lot like them telegraphing a punch you can see coming from a mile away. I see potential in this good-looking series, but I sure hope future issues read better than the first issue did.

I, Zombie #1 - was all kinds of fun. The lead character Gwen, is undead and every so often needs to chow down on a recently deceased brain (good thing her day job is a gravedigger). Problem is, you are what you eat, so when she snacks on a brain she gets the memories and then is compelled to tie up the deceased's loose ends. Throw in ghost and were-terrier sidekicks, a Vampire moving into town and a few mysterious men in black out to put monsters back in the ground where they belong, and you've got a recipe for what looks like an awesome new series. And the first issue is only a buck. What are you waiting for?

I'll back up Rouge2 on this one. At the time I wrote my reviews above, I had only read my DCU and Marvel U comics. Later I read iZombie and I also enjoyed it. I'm looking forward to seeing where they go with this.
