I haven't been following the FF for a while. I was reading an article about the current writer and they mentioned something about Ben not really being the Thing? I've been looking and I can't find anything more specific.
Are you sure you aren't confusing Fantastic Four with Ultimate Mystery? in the Ultimate line of comics Ben Grimm just lost his rockines and turned into a normal dude who radiates purple energy when he wants to kick booty.
Or something about the F3 thing coming up where someone (probably Ben) is going to die in the 616 universe(normal continuity)...

Not really sure what you are getting after.
Why can't it be Reed for once?
Out of all the FF members, he deserves to go "missing" for a while.

He already did. Back in the 90's during Tom DeFalco and Paul Ryan's FF run, Reed was considered dead/MIA for quite awhile. Sue was basically in charge and Llyja was part of the team. It also featured the villain Hyperstorm(son of Franklin Richards and Rachel Summers), rogue Watcher, Aaron, Sue in a very nice and skimpy outfit due to her being increasingly influenced by her Malice persona and several other bits.

And Scott Lang was their science guy and Namor popped in and stayed for awhile to comment on Sue's interesting outfit.

Understandable, but he needs to try again.

I just meant there was another time when Reed was the "odd man out." THough he wasn't replaced, and did go on missions and such, until he broke up the team (for the umpteenth time).
They're going to cure him. That's why he's not going to be the Thing.
More than likely.
I hope not. He's finally an Avenger again. That's too cool to mess with. So I guess it makes perfect Marvel sense.
