With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility For An Amazing Spider-man
Originally, this was going to be posted for the review area of the WOS Spider-man #007 heroclix, However it is much more suited here due to the length of this review; Here goes:
For a Spider-man named set, and Spider-man being one of the major poster boys for Marvel Comics (Wolverine being the next), this Spider-man leaves much to be desired; this Spider-man can't even take on half of the Spidey villains in this set (Definitely more than half).
I love and appreciate the Spidey Sense Trait - I furthermore like it being a trait, because none of his villains seem to understand why he always slips away. However, bringing this around full circle, He only has super strength for his first click, and then loses it until alter ego time, what?
He doesn't have any kind of Outwit or Perplex (Intelligence based), Flurry (Anger Management however Black suit has it), Combat Reflexes (Agility and Combat Experience), Charge or Running Shot (Web-lines), No Range (Need I say more? Yes), Incapacitate (The new Web Marker doesn't Incapacitate someone let alone do damage, at least Scarlet and Black Suit have Energy Explosion and Incapacitate on their Web Marker abilities respectively).
To Ballpark the Friendly Neighborhood Spider-man as a [Leap/Climb, Hardly Super Strong, Awesome Spidey Sense, No Range, Web Marker ability only when he has no action tokens on him] is an insult to a Spider-man named set; This is a little too Friendly Neighborhood of a Spider-man to let the Villains of this set beat the adolescence out of. Not to mention the Brick Red and Blue is hardly anything to cough at either compared to this mockumentary parody of Spider-man. The Scarlet Spider and Black Suit are far better to play with. And honestly, for a point less, you could play the Secret Invasion Spider-GIRL, and she is uber powered than Ole Pa Parker.
With Great Power Comes Great Responsibility - A Responsibility to honor a Spider-man named Set with a Level Red and Blue Spidey to play with. Uncle Ben is rolling in his grave as this Spider-man eats pumpkin bombs for breakfast. I mean seriously Wizkids/NECA, are you trying to go all Joe Quesada on us heroclix players, and ruin Spider-man too? This is a brand new day for you and I expected better.

I can agree and disagree.
Agree: I would like to see him have at least a ranged incap with his web token. This is really where my agreement with you ends, however.
This spiderman avoids damage 50% of the time. He does what he is meant to IMO; irritate the hell out of people. He does not have the Scientist keyword, so I can live w/o him having Plex and Outwit.
I honestly came in this thread expecting yet another "OMG COZMIC SPIDEY" thread.
I agree that Spidey needs to have ranged attacks. I think most preferable would have been a SP power that allows him to Incapacitate from range of 6. Spider-Man doesn't deal damge from range, so only allowing him a non-damaging attack from the use of Incapacitate seems to make the most sense. He does need super strength, too, so maybe next time he'll just get it as a trait.
Let's Play "Whoizzit?"
My Avatar is an as-yet-un-clixed character. If you know who it is, be the first respondant to correctly identify this character I'll send you some free rep!
Yeah, no OMGZORZ Cozmic, just an interesting, non-foul language, humorous review of Classic Spider-man. I don't really give a madame web about Cosmic Spidey :O)
I agree with you about the Ranged Incap for sure. None of the Spider-men have any range = Disappointing.
I have played this Spider-man multiple times now, and I'm just let down by his overall lack to do anything but dodge attacks (Which is still cool by the way). His Spidey Sense being a trait, un-outwit-able is totally awesome IMO, because none of his villains should be able to take that away from him. However, keywords don't mean anything to me, Spider-man was still incredibly intelligent regardless of his age and place in comics; and he was always full of wise cracks and methods to get around his enemies, instead of just dodging them, thus, the outwit.
All in all, having two Red and Blue Spider-men in a set, and none of them being worth playing is just depressing as far as Heroclix making goes. I had higher expectations after Brave and the Bold did some great things with DC comics.
Look out! Here comes your friendly, neighborhood SpideySteve. Catching comics and writing reviews like a Spider can. Thwip!

I see your point. It must suck especially after the damage-dealer Spidey of Secret Invasion, and it used to be all of the Spideys had range pre-Avengers.
This set should have had the definitive version of classic Spider-man.
The trait rocks, can't argue with that.
I think the Weblines ability that Spider-girl has perfectly represents Spidey's hit and run fighting style. Spidey is about fighting on the move, and yet, he lacks any mobile combat abilities. At the very least, he should have had the Transporter ability.
The web-shooters ability should have included incapacitate.
Perplex and late dial outwit should have been obvious.
Spider-Man deals 3 damage on every click except for his last one.
With his bare hands. You know what that is? Super Strength. It's on his dial. Every click. Right up until he's beaten and exhausted. Spider-Man doesn't need to swing around a car at every opportunity. Spidey isn't up there with Thor, Hulk, the Thing, and so on. He's fine, as is. Super Strength-wise, anyway.
I'm in Providence! I've been out of the hobby, but I'm looking for Saturday gaming. Send me a PM if you know the down-low!
There is no definitive version of a character, because there is no definitive writer of a character and because writers don't treat characters as unchanging constants, and because different generations prefer different things about some characters.
The whole concept of definitive is flawed.
I like this spidey because he does a few things that spider man often does and he does them very well. He's cheap enough to field and he's more versatile than the lampost version (who mainly hits you, then get's hit and dies)
I'll gladly take this spidey over a 160 pt spidey who has perplex and outwit and incapacitate with range and web token markers and the ridiculous defense trait, and.......
Simply put I'm not gonna pay more than 100 pts for spidey. I've tried and it feel wrong to me. This spidey fits nicely in the point range I play spidey and he does a lot of the things I'd like a spidey to do and he's not prohibitively expensive.
Iron River Read my wife's comic or I will say mean things about your dog.
I suckered these guys into playing: Feedback Damage
50/50 Spidey is a beast. Played two of em tonight and they stomped red shulk and Spiderhulk taking no damage themselves and without pushing.
As for the shortage of superstrength, How often does Spidey hit people with engine blocks? Hot dog carts? Not often enough to warrant more than 3 clicks of spread out SS IMO
TEAL? Teal is for people who have not yet mastered sarcasm to the point it is always evident, even in text form

Hello, thank you, Goat, people look at green boxes and don't look at his damage... Spidey can knock down a brick wall with his bare hands. He can kill a normal human being wearing body armor (a bystander token with Toughness) with one punch. Yeah, I think that's Super Strength, too. Except it's un-Outwittable, because it's a raw number.
He should NOT be able to knock down a brick wall or kill a human being at range with his web shooters... when has that ever happened? Outside of a HeroClix game, I mean.
I personally like the new web shooter design. It's not overpowering, it's comicy. This Spidey can use Incap-lite with his web shooter for free -- he doesn't even have to roll to hit, he just webs you in place. That's pretty cool, especially against players that have sucky breakaway rolls.
This Spidey is only 73 points, too. He's not ridiculously powered (and then not ridiculously costed).
For those who want a Spidey with ranged attack, play the BIBTB Spidey. He can deal damage from range.
I still really want a 80-90 point Spider-man with good stats and STARTING perplex, and a move and attack ability that represents his webs, ie he can't really do damage with it but he can run interference and/or slow people down. Out of the dozens of Spider-man pieces we've gotten there's what, 1 with starting perplex, maybe 2? How many with running shot, 1-2? I think we got 1 transporter in sinister without the transporter symobl. Spider-man wisecracks, is smart, has webs, is strong, dodges stuff, is very mobile when he fights, and never gives up. Have just don't have a dial in the game yet that allows him to do all of those things. I think the closest version we got to a Definiative spider-man came out way back in Mutant Mayhem, the Veteran is doing a lot of what he should be able to do. Still though, no starting perplex and old-school flagging defense numbers keep him from being great.
This new one is great, I use him with lunge and he's totally playable. He's still not the Spider-man I wanted. Also if I"m going to nitpick, if they made a trait to represent his spider-sense, WHY DON"T CARNAGE AND VENOM IGNORE IT? And yet Doppleganger gets to? Lame.
