A while ago we had another musical showdown that featured songs with the same name but different writers/performers. They were one-offs and not done in conjunction with the Rock Wars. Please listen to all the songs, even the ones that you haven't necessarily heard before and then pick your favorites. Some songs may only have two competitors and some may have as many as four or five or six or even seven max. I'll try to weed out the pretenders from the contenders.
Our 71st match-up is LIAR (with thanks to readdyeddy?).
As usual, there are a lot of songs on this one, but this will make for a nice time killer while you're working or blogging or whatever it is you do. Just sit back and listen. Give each song a chance, and then decide.
The last matchup featured the song I Want You and was won by Bob Dylan with Tom Waits and Marvin Gaye taking 2 and 3 respectively. Every artist in this one was recognizable and even the last place Kings of Leon had a song with almost a million and a half views.
In the immortal words of DTM - "So what say you all?" Who will be the winner in this latest match-up of Same Name/Different Song? Rank the songs from favorite to least favorite as there's a points system to decide winners & losers. Also, if you like, put in comments about the songs - good or bad, it's all cool.

Rollins Band: I remember this from years ago, and was ready to dismiss it as gimmicky, and then while listening I remembered how awesome it was. Why do I own no Rollins music?
Mumford and Sons: Nice folky tune
Argent: A pleasant surprise! I'm sure I've head this before, but don't remember it well.
Sex Pistols: A clean little rocker
Cranberries: I really like the sound of this band and listened to this album to death back in the day, but this song really is too much of a throwaway to rank very high
Queen: Never would have imagined, at first glance at the list, that Queen would be so far down. But like Cranberries song, it's too much of a throwaway to me.
Korn: Didn't hate it (as I expected to) but still the weakest of the batch.
1. Argent - Russ Ballard is a great songwriter and I'll always love me some Argent.
2. Queen - Could just as easily have been my #1 but I figure Argent will need the love. This is a great Queen song.
3. Mumford & Sons - A nice surprise!
4. Rollins Band - I get what he was going for here.
5. Sex Pistols - Better then I was expecting. Never really knocked out by the early punk movement.
6. The Cranberries - I've heard much better from them.
7. Korn - Pretty much where I expected them to end up.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
1. Mumford and Sons --- no better or stronger evidence of why I am grateful that two of the regulars steered me here (thank you, RE and VG9). This is just plain beautiful and I hadn't heard it until today, because of this thread. I am glad to know it now.
2. Argent --- I LOVE Argent and this is as good an example of why as any.
3. Rollins Band --- well, there must be balance in the universe so here is the flip side of the comments attached to my first choice. Egad, now that I've heard this and viewed the video, I feel cursed and am fearful, knowing that the consumption of pepperoni pizza (Sicilian-style) too soon before bedtime now will increase the risk not only of acid reflux, but likely bring this demonic persona of Henry Rollins onto the stage of my very own Sandman Mystery Theater, yelling and cavorting up close and personal, until I wake up screaming my head off, all in a sweat, and then having to answer to She Who Must Not Be Roused From Sleep (shudder)...whew. I am NOT glad to know this now.
*pours big glass of cold water over head, shakes self all about*
Ahem.
4. Queen
5. Cranberries
6. Sex Pistols
7. Korn --- I'd sooner listen to Henry again.
Tim Burton was right: "A square jaw does not a Batman make." Steve Buscemi as the next Batman! Luke Perry as Joker! Let's make it happen!
-------------------------------------------------------------------
1) Argent- The song that popped into my head when I saw the song title. Not the version, just the song. I think Argent is better, but the song is not one that I think is great no matter which version is used.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2) Cranberries- Easy enough to listen to, but is it good?
--------------------------------------------------------------------
3) Korn- I don't hate it, but this has never quite been my scene.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
4) Queen- I hear parts of what would later be Bohemian Rhapsody and Keep Yourself Alive in this, but I liked them better when they were in those other songs than I do here.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
5) Rollins Band- Yeah, the message is there, I just don't care for the delivery, and no one wants to believe it, anyway.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
6) Sex Pistols- It's the Sex Pistols, alright.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
7) Mumford and Sons- As I am slotting these as I am going, I am hoping that the trend of each song being worse than the one before it doesn't continue. I started with a song that I said wasn't great.
This is solidly in "bad" territory.
This was a very lackluster selection. Maybe it's my mood right now, but 1-6 are all interchangeable, and the line could be over or under any of them.
#7 is clearly the worst of the bunch, though.
Queen - this is the good stuff. Brian May, Freddie Mercury. No amount of glitter and fancy costuming can hide the sheer raw talent that these 4 guys have.
Argent - Close enough to the original remake by Three Dog Night that I still enjoyed it alot
Mumford and Sons - I'm really digging these guys lately. Little Lion Man gets a lot of airplay on the local AAA radio station.
----------------------------------------------
Sex Pistols - hey look y'all - its the Sex Pistols. Yawn.
Cranberries - speaking of yawn. Someone please tell me why so many people love this snooze band so much.
Korn - yeah. okay. whatever.
Rollins Band - Holy ####! What the #### was that?!?!?! It started out funny because you could almost believe that that ####### believed all that he was saying about himself. Then he goes all Red Hulk on us and....what the #### was that, anyway?
May all your hits be crits!
On the whole, human beings want to be good but not too good, and not quite all the time. - George Orwell
1- Rollins Band- The intensity makes me want to smash some concrete slabs and laugh while I'm doing it! Fun and exhilirating. Think I'll try listening to this rather than just clearing my mind before my next training session. Oh, and I think I lost what was left of any innocence in four minutes and fifty one seconds.
2- Argent- The whole song sort of simmers, and the last 1 minute feels like it going to boil over. Parts remind me of Savoy Brown's good stuff, with the TINIEST seasoning of Atomic Rooster. Good song.
3- Cranberries- I find it so hard to dislike any song that they do. Always a unique and pleasant sound. Like this.
4- Queen- Great intro! I really like the guitar.
5- Mumford and Sons- OK.
6- Sex Pistols- There is energy.
7- Korn- I think I am tired of Korn. They used to wake me up, but like a train going by outside the window every night, I think I can actually sleep through most Korn songs now.
1. Queen (Better than the rest, but doesnt rock my world at all really)
2. Cranberries (Eh, it was........OK, I guess)
3. Argent (Nothing special really)
TIED for Last:
Korn (loud, noisy metal that just gave me a headache)
Mumford and Sons (blah, thankfully Ill never listen to that again)
Rollins Band (Uhhhhh, more carp)
Sex Pistols (More noise)
That was one painful series of song to sit thru.
HCR Rates The Movies Is Back! Come and share your thoughts on a TON of films, new and old! Our latest movie - BATMAN V SUPERMAN: DAWN OF JUSTICE
Mumford and Sons (WXRT, Chicago's grand old dame of indie rock, has been championing these guys for months, and it's nice to see that the old girl can still be ahead of the curve on occasion.)
Argent (A fine little classic rock tune, with some surprisingly complex instrumentation.)
Rollins Band (Oh, Hank. I'm sorry, but whenever I hear this song, I can't help but think of the Beavis and Butthead sketch.)
Queen (I'm honestly surprised that this didn't rank higher. I dig me some Queen, but this is hardly them at their arena-filling best.)
Sex Pistols (This actually sounds, I don't know, more musically competent than most of their other stuff. Granted, the bar is fairly low, but I'll give credit where it's due.)
Cranberries (Have these guys started sending royalty checks to the Sundays yet? No? Okay, that gets them docked a couple points.)
Korn (Well, at least you know it's awful going in. It's not like they try to start out decent and slowly build up to something horrible. Nope. From the first, erm, "note," you know this one is going to be a cringe-inducing assault on the senses.)
