I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.
I couldn't resist doing this one because they cowrote the song.

Just the other day I was wondering why I didn't put this song into the 70's song ToC.
But I would have a problem calling either of these the cover or the original.
I guess Patti Smith gets the nod, but the writing credits say Springsteen, too, and it was a song that he set out to do and only passed it to Patti Smith later.
Her "original" was actually a cover of a song that had never been recorded.
Given that the song has been covered numerous times (10,000 Maniacs, Keel, Cascada, and others), I would have liked to have seen one of them up get put up against (and probably get crushed by) Patti Smith.
And doing that would have also put a studio cut against a studio cut.
This is Patti Smith's best work. Whether she regrets it or not, this is the only song of hers that I care about, but it is a great song.
But considering the source I shouldn't be surprised. If I was being sent to a desert island and I could only have the music of two bands two accompany me, Springsteen would be there.
If I could only have ten albums, Springsteen would be there.
But for this song, and these two takes on that song, I can't say that he beats what Patti Smith did.
Did you miss the part where I said they cowrote the song?

I've posted a studio version for Bruce Springsteen.

You are really on a roll with some great songs for the Originals/Covers, seriously.
I really love the Patti Smith version, a vote for the original. Rarely do I say this, but seems like no contest on this one.
Mentioning 10,000 Maniacs above, I don't think they would have been "crushed" by Patti Smith. Beat by her probably, but not crushed, as they are both very good. This just seems like a song that lends itself more to a feminine voice.
I have to vote for Patti Smith also. Bruce isn't bad though.

Patti Smith easily on this. A smoother rendition. As I've said, I'm not too big on Bruce.
Ditto. Sometimes, Bruce's style and the song converge enough that I can enjoy the song, but really not much of a fan. Patti Smith easily here for me too.
