I wanted to vote for the Temptations, I really did, but such a great effort from a band whose drummer, Pete Hoorelbeke, was the main vocalist. The bass lines are tight, percussion is all up in your grill, and they just don't give a flying funk. I had a few 45s of theirs and wish they were still in my collection.

Rare Earth is a classic example of 70s music done right: no pop, no schmaltz, no disco - just pure funk and great musicianship. I'd have given anything to have been able to see them live. The Temptations are smoother than silken butter, to be sure, but Rare Earth definitely gets the nod here.
May all your hits be crits!

Anyone who's followed my voting in these knows I have a soft spot for the oldies. And while the Motown sound isn't my favorite, I'll still give a nod to the Temptations.

Rare Earth
VelvetGuru, Your comment prompted me go look through the 45s I still have, and I do still have it. Gargantua's following comment:

reminded me that I thought both the original and cover were by Motown. Its true, Rare Earth was a trademark of Motown Record Corporation.
So Gargantua, even though the Rare Earth version doesn't sound as much the familiar Motown Sound, it looks like either way any of us went was a vote for the Motown sound!
