The Manfred Mann version reached the public first and was called The Mighty Quinn.
Quinn the Eskimo is based on a role from an Anthony Quinn film.

Much as I love Dylan, there are times when I prefer a cover version of his work.

This is one of those times (and I'd likely feel this way even if Bob had the benefit of a better production).

I remember back in the 60s, I was in the Bronx visiting family and I was standing outside their brownstone with my 14 transistor radio and I was touching the antenna to one of those metallic things that used to be attached to telephone poles and listening to Manfred Mann doing Quinn and the Turtles doing Happy Together. I love you Bob, but that's a memory not even you can beat. Manfred Mann

I love Bob Dylan's music but this is definitely a case where the song was improved by the cover.

Yeah, Manfred Mann's cover was just so joyous and exuberant, it's impossible not to love it.
