Going Emmylou here as well, but a hardy high five for mentioning Steve Earle...again. Steve is amazingly good.

I love the Steve Earle version, but Emmylou really knocks this one out of the park. You know that she's got the pipes to carry the tune without those little vocal breaks, but they allow the "character" who's singing the song to exist separately from the vocalist. The "character" is hurting, and she's not afriad to let you hear it. Well played, Emmylou.

Unfortunately yes, and I only say that because I want to pick the acoustic version, but can't argue with that sweet voice of Emmy Lou.

This is one of the few times you'll hear me opt for a female voice over a male voice. I'll definitely go with Emmy Lou Harris here though.

Well, I'm paddling upstream here, but I gotta go with Steve Earle. Nothing against Emmylou Harris, but I for one can certainly feel the hurt in Earle's vocal. To me he just does a slightly better job of selling the song. Hell, if he sang a car commercial like that then I'd be crying all the way to the showroom.

I wonder if Steve would have fared better if I could have found a studio version?

I like Emmylou's cover better.
