New player with FF Starter - looking for expansion advice
Hi Everybody,
Brand new to the game. Just played my first one this past weekend and then I picked up the FF starter set. Last year I got into MonsterPocalypse & Star Wars Miniatures pretty heavily so I need to be somewhat budget conscious as I begin my HeroClix obsession.
I've also picked up a Nightcrawler from WoS. My friend was using NC and was so annoying I went ahead and picked one up. I can see some potential use with the FF starter as well. Figure it doesn't hurt to have one.
I've been reading a lot of articles & posts in the forums the past few days to get a feel for how to proceed. It seems like the starter will give me some decent options for casual play. I'm sure I'll try local tournaments but my goal right now is to learn the game and have fun.
With that I've put together some potential acquisitions and I'd love to get advice on them. My main focal points are:
budget friendly work decently with the FF starter initially. Or just be cool. have fun & they're a favorite character (I've been out of comics for awhile but I'm getting back into them.)
So here are my thoughts on some potential acquisition targets. I appreciate any advice on these & welcome suggestions! TIA
blackest night starter (& maybe brightest day) - played these in the game the other night and it was fun. I even won somehow.
Iron Man WoS - I love Iron Man and this guy seems pretty decent and budget friendly. He's two points over playing a nice, easy even point team with the FF (depending on point build) but hey, he's Iron Man.
WoS Spiders - Scarlet, Spiderman, Venom, Carnage, Symbiotes, others? - I like Spidey and my friend was using some of these pretty effectively. Plus they are budget friendly. Not sure how they'll fit with FF but that's not important in this case.
a bunch of nurses - they seem like decent pieces to fill out point gaps and provide support
a bunch of researchers - mainly to fill out a doom team and to fill out "scientist" keywords once i figure out how to utilize keywords
doombots - same as researchers except without the "scientist" part
puma WoS - seems like he'd fit in pretty much any squad and is decent. Plus he fits that budget point.
Bullseye WoS - Looks like a fun piece and not too expensive that will fit in multiple teams.
Thor HoT - I also love Thor. 'Nuff Said. This one looks pretty good and not too expensive.
Capt. America HoT - So my research indicates he doesn't quite fit the budget part...
Capt. America SI - Gotta have Cap. And this guy seems like he'd work out decently. And I could team him with Sgt. Rock below. No shield throw though. Bummer.
Iron Fist SI - Liked the comic, searched the units db, and there he was. Looks fun. Not sure if he's expensive or not.
Shang Chi Avengers - Another "liked the comic" character.
Red Skull Avengers - Yup. Another "liked the comic" character.
Mole Man SI - Fits the FF theme, seems decent.
Moloids SI - If I'm going to have Mole Man...
Dr. Strange SI - I love the Doc. Also would be fun to try and Perplex The Thing with Doc & Mr. F. Not sure if you can do that and it wouldn't be a long term strategy. But it'd be fun.
Howard the Duck SI - Also love Howard. I remember when the comics came out.
Sgt. Rock DC75 - Yes, I also loved Sgt. Rock comics. Must. Have. Also will look for the other Sgt from cosmic justice as that sculpt seems more appropriate.
Easy Co. soldiers DC75 - Need somebody to go with Sarge. I'm thinking 10 or so?
Warlord DC75 - Yes, another comic I love from my childhood. And he seems pretty useful on a bunch of teams.
Larfleeze - Honestly don't know much about him (again, been out of comics for awhile) but reading about him he just seems like he'd be fun to play.
Kid Zoom - Guess I need one to counter nightcrawler.
So thanks for looking. I'm looking forward to getting into clix! Again, appreciate any advice & suggestions you may have for a n00b.
well, if you really like the fantastic four, the vet ghost rider from fantastic forces is a really good addition to your team, I would recommend typing "fantastic four" into the units section and checking out all the different possibilities, most of them are quite cheap to purchase
I absolutely love the WoS line. The red and blue spiderman, scarlet spider, and puma are great. another great piece is AA metron, JL batman, impossible man, and HoT venom. If you are aiming for a cheap very effective piece I recommend WoS red and blue suit spidey or puma. both of these pieces will give you more bang for your buck.
an005 Deadshot
an008 Crimson Avenger
an010 Johnny Quick
ws003 Researcher (pickup 3 if possible)
ws027 X-23
ws029 Wolfsbane
ws042 Bullseye
ws040 Scarlet Spider
bb021 The Holiday Killer
bb043 Kid Zoom
bb044 Black Flash
ha010 M-11 (Best piece for sub 60 points ever released)
ha033 Sif
ha035 Loki
ha040 Captain America
aa004 The Question
aa006 Gotham City Detective (pickup 3 if possible)
si001 Spider-Man (Almost as good as M-11 and has F4 keyword for theme)
si004 Iron Fist
si008b Ms Marvel (Feel bad for suggesting as she is so cheesy, but if you want a good brick, she's the go-to, but you'll be hated for playing her >_<)
si033 Dr. Strange
si045 Namor
si041 Spider-Girl
si048a Elektra (HUMAN VERSION!!)
cr010 Liberty Belle
cr022 Dawnstar
cr039 Harbinger
jl001 Batman(Best Batman in the game, probably one of the best figs in the game. Absolutely broken)
jl032 Bronze Tiger
There's a small-ish list of all the recent sets. Most of these figures are low cost, high utility/power pieces that are worth every penny you spend on them. The last three pieces are Super Rares, I tried to avoid them as you said you wanted to ease into it, but those three pieces are absolutely must haves and are simply fantastic.
Most pieces on there you'll get for around for 5-6 bucks and downwards, depending on the figure.

I agree with Omegarobb, Spiderman, Scarlet spider and Puma are must plays. Metron and Impossible man are great too, Hot Venom will completely bother ur opponent. I wonder when they will bring back the Human Torch since they just killed him off in Issue 587 of Fantastic Four by a bunch of bugs.

Nekron you suck. the first time I let it go because you may have not known any better. Now you are just being a jerk.
Pick up the FF "team members" She-thing and Spiderman from SI. both 50 points and very useful. Also the power pack from the same set have the FF TA.
Some of the Greatest cheap figures out there. I'll give you a cheap 300 point team idea first. I built this team on a whim and it kicked @ss. Never underestimate the power of healthy figures with b/c/f.
Thing 100
Solo 99 wos rare
Warlord x2 100 dc75th
Other cheap figures i recommend
Some of these have already been mentioned
The Question AA, 37 points of perma stealth and outwit or perplex
The Chief crisis, cheap scientist thats all around support piece, great with Reed from the FF starter
Spiderman wos, Classic red and blue super -fun piece to play
Researcher's, plural horde these guys they rock as mastermind fodder
Johnny Quick, 50 points of hypersonic, dont forget telephone booth object
Mr. Terrific, great source of cheap outwit
As for Brightest Day/ Blackest Night packs i would buy the Brightest Day one first if your strapped for cash. The Blackest Night characters usually have 1-2 keywords and dont fit easily on many theme teams besides lantern themes, while the brightest day characters are an easier fit. The Hawkgirl and the Deadman from the BD set are amazing for there cost.

Thanks for all of the advice everybody. Very helpful! Rep given.
FYI, I like the Four but honestly if the Blackest Night starter had been in the store I would have bought it. But after reading a lot about the four I'm looking forward to playing them. I'm putting together my list of "stuff to get" based on the recs in this thread.
My budget focus is more to reduce wife-aggro than anything else. This past year has seen a huge invasion of all of the MonPoc factions and several Star Wars factions take up residence in our house. Now I have to figure out a place to put everything. I guess there are worse problems to have. :>
Tonight's our one of our weekly MonPoc tournaments at our local shop. Going to play in that and then hopefully get some clix in. Looking forward to learning the game and figuring keywords, team abilities & such.
I'm just throwing this out there, but the "Marvel Classics" Battle Packs are great for new guys, in particular the one with SI Iron Man, Iron Fist, and Punisher, which are all excellent pieces. I'd also suggest a 100 pt. FBCD Iron Man, as it's a good, solid, and cheap clix that pairs well with Reed.
PS: FBCD Iron Man and War Machine are often bundled together on eBay for a low price. Get them both if you can.

Firt thought in my mind is that you should pick up 2 pieces. Both dirt cheap.
Secret Invasion Spider man and She Thing
Both 50 points and keyworded Fantastic Four.
This gives you the ability to build with the FF starter very easily and should cost no more than a buck or two.
My second thought is, and this is key people, Why did this guy have to buy his first hit of Plastic Crack?
Has this ever happened before? Everyone I ever asked has told me that the first time they played, the person introducing them to the game would give the new guy/girl a few pieces to start him/her off.
This is Unnacceptable. So here is my offer Superfly.
If you send me a PM with your shipping info, I will send you a box of my extras to get you started right.
Welcome to the game.
We'll have you Clixin with the best of em in no time.
