So, I'm somewhat newer into the game, but I was curious what most would pick given these restraints. This will be my first time trying to build a large theme team. If I am misunderstanding the theme team rules, I'd like to know.
Is it correct that in 1000 point build total, a non-generic theme team would require 7 characters in theme? (1000/150=6.66...; round up to 7)
Also, do my theme PC actions have to be put on the themed characters?
1000 pt Golden Age, no feats, no BFCs, must be either non-generic theme team, or a team that shares the team ability (but with the non-generic theme team requirement of one character for each 150 pts).
I will most likely run Sinestro Corps because I have them and have wanted to use them in a big game for some time now, but still finagling how I'll set it up. I really wanted to get Larfleeze into a game, and this is probably going to be one of my few chances.
Build
The theme team
176 AN044 Mongul
85 BN003 Scarecrow
64 AA002 Manhunter
64 AA002 Manhunter
126 AA028 Arkillo
72 AA046 Lyssa Drak
70 AA030 Amon Sur
5 BBS003 Yellow Lantern
The side story
212 AN043 Larfleeze
97 CR021 Rip Hunter
The filler
???????? < - probably want some PC here, hmm? Might take some digging to actually find one but XP024 Destiny fits perfect here at 29 points. Or maybe I need more outwit? Or .... suggestions?

Anyway, I was curious for suggestions on what I'm trying to do, as well as ideas for good teams that would fit in.
All figures on your team must share the keyword for your team to be a themed team. The Sinestro corp part of your team totals up to 657 points so youre gonna need some more Sinestro Corp characters on your team. My suggestion is the DC75th SR Sinestro. If you can get your hands on one I highly suggest using him. He will bring your point total to 881 points, which with no feats will be harder to get close to the even 1000. Another good thing about Sinestro is that he has psychic blast and outwit and a perplex that cant even be outwitted. As far as the sinestro characters you already have, the combination of perplexes you have can help when it comes to busting through invulnerability/impervious/toughness, but youre really gonna want those outwits to get through defense, and Manhunter unfortunately is SOL for that. Make psychic blast your friend, and DC7th Sinestro is gonna be your MVP when it comes to that due to his 12 AV. Another good figure for this team would be the AA104 Grodd LE. He has outwit for most of his dial and starts with 3 damage with ranged combat expert. He is an LE figure and hes not the easiest to get but he would do some serious damage. I would also suggest the AA044 Yellow Lantern. His defend combined with the energy shield/deflection that Scarecrow and Amon Sur both have will make it hard to break through their defenses. Yellow Lantern isnt going to do a lot of damage but he will definetely help defend the team and his energy explosion and ranged combat expert will have its uses. I think the Sinestro characters you already have are good, but I think that another heavy hitter on your team would be the best advise I can give, and the nice thing for you is that some of the heavy hitting Sinestro characters have outwit so youre really getting 2 for 1. The one power your team is going to lack is PC and theres not much you can do about that. Having the PC for your team will be helpful though and thats nothing to sneeze at. This is the team I would build:

I'm going to answer the "what would you build?" question, but keep in mind the following: (1) I'm a long time player, with a big collection of older figures and (2) I tend to focus on comic themes.
I recently played this Asgardian "Ragnarok" team (999 points, no feats) that was fun. It's 100% HoT, which may not be available for you as a newer player.
100 points is the perfect size to play the original (Golden Age) JSA (Thank you WK for the Golden Age Atom!) lineup:
234 CR Spectre
145 DC75 Green Lantern (Alan Scott)
135 V (Or) Hawkman
134 LE (Or) Doctor Fate
120 AA The Flash
100 V (Leg) Hourman
59 U (Or) Sandman
50 DC75 The Atom
= 977 points and there is room for tweaking if you want some other golden oldies to join in.
1000 points is also the right total to play the original (Silver Age) lineup
251 V (Icons) Superman
169 DC75 SR Hal Jordan
144 LE (Or) Detective John Jones
127 DC75 Uncommon Wonder Woman
119 DC75 SR Barry Allen
106 DC75 Aquaman
75 JL Common Batman
4 BST Snapper Carr
= 995 points. You can also fool around with this one, but be mindful of keywords.

Except for bystanders of course. A typical strategy is to have a number of bystanders on a theme team. Any character on your team (including the bystanders) can use a theme team probability control.
It seems I was confused by the theme team rule, I read the section about 1 per 100 / 1 per 150 and missed the first specification. Yeah, back to the drawing board.
I do have that Sinestro, and will gladly play him. I also have access to the big giant Sinestro, but the venue I'm playing at doesn't usually allow those. Maybe since this is a large game, but I have heard he's not the best in game. Hmm.
I like Mongul's Leadership ability, and since the scenario special rules limit the number of actions to six (I still don't get why) I think it will come in handy. I will always roll his first, and then Sinestro's if I fail with Mongul. Those two together is 400 points, so I've got 600 to work with.
That gets me awfully close, and that's only if I can manage to get more Manhunters. Alternatively, I might splurge for a Superman Prime.
I like the idea of a JSA team, I love the team ability as well. I might try to work that out if I have enough minis, and I love Jay Garrick on the treadmill, especially when he gets to Supersonic Punch. I mostly have newer figures, so mine might not work out the same.
The 100 point Sinestro figure shouldn't be too bad, as long as it is sharing the defense value of Yellow Lantern. The drawback is that your team only then has 2 Manhunters, and is 49 points down. If you aren't familiar with the big figures, I don't advise using it for the first time in a 1000 point game.
FWIW, the Sinestro Corps Scarecrow is IMO more playable than Amon Sur.
A Justice Society team I might be able to manage. I have all of the new pieces, and the older pieces don't seem to be too hard to find. I'm only missing Shazam, LG Mr. Terrific, and The Spectre. There are enough fliers and transporters to have a pretty strong opening turn. Whoever seems the biggest target for Outwit will take AN Mr. Terrific along with him, The Atom will probably go with Wonder Woman as a secondary attacker after she charges. I'm not sure who Superman and LG Mr. Terrific would ride with, all depends on positioning. Superman WILL be in elevated terrain quickly if possible. I also like AA Flash, but not sure if I want to shuffle for him. Suggestions welcome on this team as well.
234 CR059 The Spectre
59 AN011 Mr. Terrific
145 AN049 Green Lantern
120 AN050 Superman
100 AN051 Wonder Woman
50 AN012 The Atom
140 BB055B Shazam!
80 AN052 Batman
72 LG017 Mr. Terrific
1000
I agree about Scarecrow. I have both of them in, we play with a Highlander rule (no dupes of the same non-generic character from the same set). I want to keep Amon Sur because of his Perplex. I'll probably push him while positioning to get it, as his low damage and attack values are going to keep him as a secondary attacker at best, but I wonder if I might shuffle some to get more Manhunters. Are they worth the points, though?
I was also thinking about Central City. It would pretty much be a bunch of HSSers. Seems fun in my mind.
I like some of the Central City characters but I dont think that youll be able to do a lot of damage individually and although HSS is great, most Central City characters dont do a lot of damage with HSS and in 1000 point games, youre gonna be going up against some big characters. Also, someone plays Kid Zoom and its all over.
As for Sinestro corp, the manhunters are good, dont get me wrong, but the outwit that only works against nondefense powers is gonna be very situational and may not work out well for you. If you do use them, I would not choose them over the BN Scarecrow.
If I were building a team for this, and my understanding is I have to choose characters that are either nongeneric themed or they can all share the same team ability, I would (suprisingly) play Batman Villains. My Batman villains team is my favorite team and even though they are not the strongest team they are my favorite. This is what I would play:
AA007 Two-Face 75
AA011 Riddler 90
AA051 Mad Hatter 75
AA059 The Joker 97
BB021 Holiday Killer 43
BB026 The Sensei 70
BB034 Ra's Al Ghul 102
BB053 Harley and Ivy 175
AN057 Bane 140
AA042 Ventriloquist 70
AA008 Street Thug 19 x 3
Total 994
The strategy with them is to use the outwits and perplexes as much as possible, but unfortunately this team usually has to focus on one character at a time. This team is very fun and has a good combo of lots of support from perplex and outwit, and stronger attacking characters like Harley and Ivy, the Joker, Bane, and at some moments Ra's and Sensei. I also never get tired of one of my characters using mastermind to transfer 5 clicks on to a street thug.
I already have Scarecrow in, venue has a highlander rule, so I can't dupe him. Manhunters I can because they are generic. The only other figure I actually own for the team is Grodd, and he just doesn't fit as well.
EDIT: My last team did not have a Scarecrow, sorry.
The reason is simple, though. He's 85 points. I'd be stuck with 50 open points, and that seems to small a hole to fill.
I have access to most of the newer Sinestro Corps pieces except Batman (starting at Arkham Asylum).
EDIT: CRAP. That's not enough pieces. I guess I'd need to move either Mongul or Sinestro out. I like Mongul for his leadership, but Sinestro's Perplex is more tactical. But still I'm having trouble making it fit ...
