RPSC: Green Lantern Corps #22 - Raisins, Dates, and Nuts
Green Lantern Corps #22
“Raisins, Dates, and Nuts”
By Lightshear
The sounds of squeaking rubber, thwacking paddles and grunts of exertion reverberated in the brightly lit training room as Jennifer "Jade" Hayden and Tomar-Tu ducked and wove around each other, pursuing the ball being bounced with ever-increasing speed off the wall ahead.
"I like this… racquetball thing," Tomar said, huffing out a breath as his three-clawed toes gripped at the waxed floor. He raced back to the left and stretched out with his will to move the small ring-projected paddle into position to hit the ball back as it sped toward him.
"Yeah," Jenny gasped, pushing off in her sneaker-shod feet to hit the ball on the rebound. "Well--it's more like a variation on the regular game."
She ducked and dove right to catch Tomar's rebound with her own hovering paddle. The object was to keep a focused projection of the racket-paddle held at a constant distance while each player applied their will to projecting the ball simultaneously - a shared construct that required each player's will acting in concert while also spinning and counter-spinning the ball to get the edge over each other for the rebound.
"I used to *huff* play this a lot to… to keep myself model-fit an--*hooah!* And to learn to manage my powers. Th-the team dynamic thing is a new idea."
"Well," Tomar said, hammering the ball as sweat rolled off his yellow-orange beak, "I like it."
When they finally finished, Jennifer missing a strike and falling with little grace to her butt on the floor, they grabbed towels and water and retreated to the showers. After a long, relaxing wash, they met back up outside and sat heavily on a bench in the open park that faced the training facility. The place was on a hill overlooking a wide span of the city, and the view from the benches was fantastic.
"You know, it's kind of sad," Jenny smiled, rubbing her neck and taking a long drink of water as they sat looking out over the gleaming city of Oa. "I've been here so long, I have to remind myself how amazing this place is."
"Almost all of us share an amazing capacity to render anything mundane, given enough exposure," Tomar nodded, sitting back with a sigh. "It feels good to see it like this, though."
"Sore and exhausted?"
"No," he laughed out loud; a funny, clucking kind of squeaky sound that Jenny had found hilarious from the first time she heard it. "No, I mean casually. In normal clothing with a friend and without the feeling of duty dragging my focus elsewhere. I feel like it's these moments where I can actually remember how it felt the first time I came here."
"Ugh. It seems like forever since I came here. It's been… years. My life now would be completely unrecognizable to the girl I was then."
"Is that a bad thing?"
"I don't--not really? No, not really. I don't miss who I used to be. I mean, I like who I'm turning out to be. I like it better than being a model, that's for damn sure."
"I was going to ask you about that…"
"What, being a model?"
"N--well, not really, no. It's more… well, this was actually a pretty terrible transition, honestly."
"Come on, Tomar - out with it," she laughed, watching as he grew more and more flustered. He actually reminded her a bit of her brother Todd, so fastidious and nervous all the time. Maybe it's why she liked him so much.
"Well, you're a female, right?"
"So I've been told."
"Yes. So, you see, there--there's this… wow, this is harder than I anticipated."
"Tomar, is there a girl you like and is this the talk where you ask me what girls like in a guy? Are we really having that talk right now?"
"…Per--uh--perhaps…?"
She laughed out loud, then tried to stifle it but only laughed more when he made his sad face, his head-crest lowering somewhat as his beak slowly worked open and closed in little movements.
"I'm sorry, Tomar," she said, wiping her eye. "Aww, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to make you feel bad. I'm not laughing at you. Not really. It's just the whole situation. I mean, that anybody would come to me for relationship advice of any kind at all is just… wow."
"Why would it be so strange?"
"Uh, hello? I've been single for something like a millennia, and the last real boyfriend I had turned out to be an ancient disembodied evil that wanted to possess me to steal my power and, like, take over the universe or something. Not exactly setting myself up to take Dear Abby's job, here."
"Dear… Abby…?"
"Oh, right--it's an Earth thing, sorry," she sighed. "I don't think I'm the help you need, birdie. I'm not really in the right space for this kind of stuff."
"Is something the matter?"
"Nothing I can put my finger on, exactly," she shrugged, slouching in the bench and watching the city life pass by in the distance. "It's just lately I've had this… it's like a sense of impending doom, not to be too melodramatic or anything. I just… In my dreams, something's happening. Something bad. And I can't ever remember what it was when I wake up, but I've still got this feeling deep down that something horrible is coming."
"Is this because of the Starheart, do you think?"
"The Starheart isn't a thing, Tomar - it's me. I am it. And yeah, I think it's that part of me trying to warn my brain about something it sees coming. I've been getting more in touch with my power every day since Krona really woke it up in me. It's starting to feel less like this outer thing that I can use and more like a real part of who I am. More natural. But at the same time, I still don't really know how to make it do exactly what I want, and when I start getting these… these feelings I get, I have no idea how to figure out what they mean exactly."
"Forewarned is forearmed," Tomar said, patting her shoulder. "Knowing that danger is ahead will help you to be ready when it comes."
"That's the weirdest part of all of it, though - I'm not afraid at all. At the same time as I'm getting these feelings of impending doom, I'm also getting this deeper sense that I'll be fine. Like, something dark is coming, but I'll be able to handle it. Like… I dunno, like I'm not alone."
"And you aren't," Tomar smiled. "In fact, if you are interested in courtship, I happen to know that Lantern Reemuz finds you quite attractive."
"Oh, Tomar, no…" she turned to him quickly. "Thanks, but--pass."
"You don't find him to be a good match?"
"Tomar, his face looks like a raisin. No. Bad match."
Tomar sighed heavily. "I just don't understand mammalian attraction."
She smiled and laid her head on his shoulder. "That's alright, birdie. Us mammals are pretty weird anyway."

"Alright, before we start I have to apologize in advance," John Stewart said as he sat at the table. "It's been a really, really long time since I've done this. Mistakes may be made. Could be bad ones. So if this isn't as smooth as you're used to, I'm hoping I can get a little leeway and aim for best two out of three."
Katma laughed lightly. "Trust me, it's been at least as long for me as it has been for you. I doubt there's any breach of etiquette you could find that I won't match."
"See, but that's fine with me," he smiled that easy, confident smile that always made her melt in secret places. "I've never been big on etiquette anyway."
"Then we should be just fine," she smiled back in kind.
"Okay. With the preamble out of the way, we can let this date officially begin," he said, picking up his menu and settling into the restaurant's fine chair.
"Sorry, mister, but this date has been officially underway since you picked me up this evening. And just so we both remember the one ground rule - no talking about work. This is about us as people, not us as Green Lanterns."
"Oh, I remember," he laughed. "I think both of us need to get away from 'the office' pretty badly. With all the business over Hal getting his ring revoked and now Arisia on probation pending an investigation into improper use of her power--"
"--Which is exactly how we wind up talking about work instead of getting to know each other as people. Nice try, Stewart, but I'm not wasting our first date on Corps business."
"Fair enough. It's just on my mind, is all. But you're right - I don't want to waste tonight either."
They placed an order with their waiter and selected a wine, then just enjoyed the relaxing evening air on the restaurant's veranda. This world hosted one of the finest resort islands in its sector and was a common retreat for Green Lanterns taking shore leave. John and Katma had arrived that morning, having each taken a couple personal days from Oa. It was to be ring-free as much as possible; buying their clothes, picking her up in a rented ride that he could only compare to a hovering version of an old-time horse-drawn carriage, and trying to have a vacation like normal people - however briefly.
"So," she began, looking up from her wine and pretending not to notice that he'd been checking out the fit of her dress. She smiled; apparently she'd chosen the right one for the night. "What should we talk about?"
"Whatever you'd like," he said, confident that there was no way she caught him admiring the low cut of her bodice. "I'll say this - the guys at Oa did not lie about how nice this resort is. I haven't been anywhere this nice in my entire life."
"We actually have quite a few places like this on Korugar," she raised his glass and drank. "Though I never really spent any time there."
"Couldn't afford it?"
"Afford? Oh-- no," she said, smiling and shaking her head. "No, we aren't like that on Korugar. Places like this ought to be enjoyed by anyone who wants to go; they're free to the public. The ability to enjoy the fruits of the prosperity of our world is as much a right as health or food or shelter is."
"Yeah… Earth ain't like that," he laughed as he tipped up his glass. "We're still a very haves versus have-nots kind of place."
"We weren't always like we are now," she said quickly, seeming embarrassed that her life had been easier than his. "It's only been about fifty years, more or less - Sinestro took a world of squabbling politicians and bureaucrats with an entrenched aristocracy on one side and the destitute on the other and turned it into an egalitarian society of plenty.
“So this was before you were even born, then?"
"Yes," she said, pausing as the waiter brought their appetizer salads. "I didn't have to live through the way it had been, but I learned about it from my parents."
She poked at her salad, suddenly feeling a rush of sadness. "Sinestro. You know, I don't think of him as Sin'nus anymore. Is that awful of me? Over a decade of apprenticeship, a lifetime of adoration and admiration, and now I think of him as 'Sinestro' even when talking about the good times."
“Does this count as talking about work, or is it something you really want to talk about?” he asked, though he immediately cringed inwardly. It had just come out before he could think of how it would sound.
“You're blunt, but it's a fair point," she sighed, taking a bite.
“No, I didn't mean-- if this is something weighing on you and you want to talk about it, I want you to. I want to be somebody you can talk to about anything."
“No, I don't have to. Not right now, anyway. Thanks for the offer," she smiled at him, and he nodded, feeling as awkward as a teenager. They sat quietly for a while, and didn't say much more until after the waiter had brought their main course.
"You know," she said, cutting at her jhlan and taking a small bite. "The sad thing is I'm struggling to think of things to talk about that aren't work related, but I really don't have much of a life outside the Corps.”
“It's true," he agreed. "I haven't done anything but work for the Guardians for the last… god, has it been five years? Even with the Agri-Corps, it was still Lantern business."
"Are we saying that our goal of a work-free weekend is impossible?"
"Maybe. There's still a lot about each other we can talk about, but we're just going to have to face up to the fact we're ring bearers and it's pretty much what both our lives are about."
"I don't know if that's sad or not," she laughed. "At this rate, I'm half expecting some alien menace to just drop out of the sky and crash into our table…"
With a scream and a start, their night was shattered by a body sheathed in green energy toppling through the sky from the distance and slamming through their table. The table broke in half, splinters flying along with glass shards from broken plates and particulate from food and water and wine; the air was filled with the sounds of chaos and tinkling broken things and clattering silverware.
The man was a Green Lantern, it was obvious from the symbol on his green vest. What surprised John was that the guy was—
“Human?” he asked the guy, getting up from where his seat had fallen back in the crash. Katma was getting up on the other side, looking out to see where the guy had come from.
“Yeah, you got a problem with that?!” the red-haired man grunted, sneering at John as his ring glowed on his white-gloved fist. Whoever he was, John had never seen a Lantern whose ring had the same effect – it seemed to be constantly sparking and sputtering, like the energy within was barely contained. Or maybe it was the will of the bearer that was barely contained…
“John Stewart,” he introduced himself as his own ring flared brilliantly, shifting the molecules of his nice suit into the uniform of a Green Lantern. “Honor Lantern, Sector 1.”
“Guy Gardner,” the red-head smirked with arrogance and machismo oozing from every pore. “Bad-a##. Sector ‘up yours.’”
“Now you just back yourself up, you trifling--” John started, but Katma raised her hand.
“Hold on, John, I know this loudmouth,” Kat said, stepping in, her costume already on and her ring ready. “He helped us fight Krona and Sinestro’s Yellow Corps. (*Green Lantern Corps Annual #1!) What are you doing here, Gardner?”
“Got assigned a new post on Oa, and I was dealing with some trash out in this sector,” Guy said, flicking dust and debris off his shoulder with a ring-generated hand. “No serious issue for a real man like this guy, but he had this thing he does what I wasn’t expecting.”
That’s when they noticed the bodies of the alien creatures climbing over the railing of the restaurant’s veranda. They had six limbs and moved like insects, but they clearly had sentient intelligence and maybe some kind of hive-mind because they all moved in perfectly timed unison formation.
“What’s the deal with these things?” John asked. “Anything we should be aware of?”
“Just a buncha mooks need their a##es kicked s’all,” Guy laughed, ready for the fight. He reached out a hand and mockingly beckoned for the aliens to come get him.
“Alright, then,” Katma said, taking aim. One jumped at her to attack and she sent a simple bludgeoning ram from her ring straight to his gut. It dropped down with a thud, but when it landed it split somehow into two identical creatures.
“What… was that?!”
“Oh, yeah,” Guy said, charging ahead. “If you hit ‘em but don’t put ‘em down in one shot, they duplicate themselves from the impact. Or something.”
“Kind of exactly the sort of thing I was talking about when I asked if there was ‘anything we should be aware of!’” John shouted as he followed in after Guy. Katma spared some of her will to form a barrier at the entrance to the restaurant itself and protect the patrons inside.
“Keep the fight outside,” she said as she moved in to assist the two men. “And avoid crowds. The last thing we need is civilian injuries!”
“Believe me, sweet-meats,” Guy laughed. “Only things getting injured today are these chumps! Bwah-ha-haaaa!”

Turn 3a: (Yours was 2b I went first.)
I will clear. (8 attack sigh.)
Descriptive Post:
"Cowabunga!" Guy waded in and started smacking aliens. Generally he seemed to be putting down more than he was spawning but it was hard to tell.
John and Katma backed him up and tried to keep clear the civilians out of the way. When one of the aliens attacked Katma though she blasted back with enough force to put it down for the count. Unfortunatly she must have targeted the wrong one, because the sonic vibrations continued.
John paused to asses the situation. This was not looking good, they would have to concentrate their firepower if they were going to end this quickly.
