Welcome one and all to the Guitar Wars. These battles feature songs nominated by you, the folks from the Realms. This isnt about who the better guitarist is, or what band is better. This is about the instrument and the song. Great solos are something that make us sit up and take notice, but the guitar is more than that. There are great riffs like the one in Beat It, which was not done by Eddie Van Halen. You know, that awesome riff that permeates the song is also the part that EVH had nothing to do with.
There are ways that the guitarist wraps his playing around the melody and makes a perfect fit thats so subtle and imperceptible that most times it gets missed. And of course, there are the solos, some with blinding speed and some played so eloquently and with so much feel that you can get lost in one sustained note after another.
You are hear! Hendrix, Clapton, Lifeson, Atkins, Page, Abasi, Santana, Morello and a host of others will be popping up. Come on in and check out the virtuosity of these and others. Find new songs you can add to your shuffle or just reminisce on songs you may not have heard in a while. Enjoy.
Listen to each song and pay attention to the guitar part and vote for the song whose guitar part you liked better. Maybe youre a fan of the slide, or finger-picking or electric solo, but give each song a chance and then vote for the performance that you liked better. Well go round by round and match by match until we have a winner. That song will be crowned best overall guitar song to listen to on the Realms. All the songs will have the main guitarist or guitarists listed along with the bands name and the name of the song. Critique it if you want, and judge it as you will, but keep in mind, this isnt a battle of what band or artist is better. I for one may not be a fan of a certain band or solo artist, but that will not keep me from voting for a song of theirs if that song has one of the most gorgeous guitar solos ever heard.
Matchups will close on the fifth day after they are posted.

Okay, I've got to come back to this one. I'm going to have a difficult time separating Les Paul's playing (which is stellar) from the fact that he invented darned near everything in that video. Solid-body electric guitar? Check. Multitrack recording? Check. I mean, with those two innovations, the guy basically invented modern popular music. I'll probably end up going with Dick Dale for the jaw-dropping virtuosity of Miserlou, but I stand in awe of Les Paul for a lot more than his picking speed.
I want these clixed: Doc Savage, Fu Manchu, Tarzan, The Shadow, The Green Hornet & Kato, Conan, Solomon Kane, The Phantom, King Kong, Universal Monsters, Black Orchid, Manhunter (Paul Kirk), Xemnu the Titan, unclixed Kirby Fourth World characters, and Lilith, Daughter Of Dracula.

Probably the toughest round to choose for me.
HOW HIGH THE MOON – Les Paul
I agree with both of you here. It just isn't right that these two are up against one another. Still and all, though, Miserlou was my nom, so my choice here is a bit easier:
Miserlou - I actually do prefer it to the Les Paul nom.
May all your hits be crits!

On How High the Moon. is Les Paul playing a Les Paul? j/k
Les Paul is everything to this whole Guitar Wars. I once read that when he and Chet Atkins had finished recording their duet LP, that Chet had mentioned that there were a couple of parts that needed fixing. As I recall the story, Les Paul turned around and said, "leave the few mistakes in and let them know we're human." That may be the best thing anyone has ever said after recording.
Golly, both of these tracks were a pleasure to listen to. And do I ever echo the "why'd they have to get matched up in round 1" sentiment. I'll readily concede Les Paul's influence and importance, and I won't mind in the least if he moves on, but if it comes down to it, Miserlou edges it out in just the slightest.

This is why I love hearing mistakes in tracks. Anbody can use a computer to make music, anybody. But to be able to physically play an instrument, there will be mistakes.
