There are two LOTR releases. This is the non-clix compatible co-op board game. The clix compatible who-knows-what's-in-it-but-I-bet-there'll-be-Nazgul release is the other, and we have a date for neither, as far as I've heard.
The clix compatible set is 30 figs, available through boosters or Watchmen-style, with maps and etc.
MK is just a boardgame, the Nazgul game is a co-op boardgame where you play as evil stopping the ringbearers, which is definitely an interesting take. The LOTR clix is coming out later, but MK isn't scheduled at this point for a Clix re-release.

Yeah, thus far the Mage Knight board game doesn't sound like has anything whatsoever to do with the old game/world other than the name.
If they want my money they'll start doing Heroclix-compatible Mage Knight miniatures that are more in the same vein as the original 'clix game. I, personally, would have thought that the creation of Lord of the Rings Heroclix would have been a perfect segue into them doing Mage Knight Heroclix, especially since the LotR Heroclix are supposed to come with the new "Epic Campaign" optional rule-set (similar to how the 1v1 rules came out shortly before Street Fighter.)
That's how it was announced, just a game set in the Mage Knight universe, not an extension of the old game in any way. Personally, as much as I'd like the old game to come back, I'll take an extension of the IP however I can get it.

The problem is that it doesn't even sound like it's actually set in the same universe / game world, especially with the focus on you playing one of the four "Mage Knights" who are destined to change the world. However, I will admit that I am no expert on the setting, and I happily look forward to someone who knows the world better than I proving me wrong 'cause that would mean that they didn't simply take the name and slap onto something unrelated.

I have to disagree with you on this, sir.
as one who played this from the first set thru 2.0, i'm preying this isn't a cash grab to string along old school fans (such as myself) ,just to justify that they "tried" to reserrect the IP. this was one of the concerns i had when it was annouced that it would be a boardgame, and i'm aware that the designer is established, but id i wanted a boardgame, i'd stick with battlelore, which is a fine game of fantasy warfare in itself.
If they're not going to attempt to give it a reasonable try, then i rather that the IP stays buried instead of morphed into something that's totally unrecognizible.
OK Wizkids- NECA..so far so good. Just remember, don't be complacent, stay hungry..and now that Mage Knight is back, don't blow it.
