Every one has a different taste, and although i agree AoA was a realy great story ..i don't think it was the best ever ..personaly i still like Days of future past, coupled with Days of future present
Individual, but crucial interlocking stories that set a new standard that brought the X-Men to the forefront and made them the icons they are to this day.
There have been a lot of good X storys. I liked AoA, but I am not sure it was the best ever. I'd love to see an expansion based on it (not just X men). God Loves, Man Kills was a big favorite of mine as well.
My only problem with Days of Future Past being called the best ever is that it lasted for 3 issues of the regular series. They managed to make AoA interesting and fun for four months in like 7 different books, 2 Tales, 2 regular marvel books, plus Alpha and Omega. I loved the AoA, but I think it might have been because, other than Bishop, it was a story all its own. Most big X arcs have alot to worry about from the past and where they want to go in the future within continuity. They could do so much to change up the characters it was just fun to get acquainted with the new versions. Plus its a big thing when you characters get so much praise that you have to keep on of them going post story-line like with X-Man, and the love of Blink and Morph so them being brought back in Exiles.
I think of the big "summer crossover storys" like Onslaught and all those it was my favorite. We can't say anything is the best, but we can say its our favorite and thats good enough.
AoA had some really great books and a few books that were just about atrocious. As a whole I really enjoyed the story for one big reason: an ending. The biggest problem for the X-Men books in the 90s was that month after month Marvel would trumpet some major revelation or that the status quo would be changed forever, yet nothing really changed. With Age of Apocolypse they could tell one of these massive storylines with the benefit of having an ending. Characters could die, sacrifices could be made, and with the exception of Blink and one or two others showing up again the universe was closed off.
The one image that stands out more than anything is Colossus turning his back on the Gen X kids and leaving them to die. This was an incredibly powerful moment and stuck with me long after the series ended. If this had happened in the Marvel U odds are the characters would've made it out by the skin of their teeth or would be resurrected within a few years.
I'm pretty thankful that Marvel has moved away from these "earth shattering" crossovers as it gives the creative teams the chance to build their stories at a more natural pace. The first few times they did big summer X-overs it wasn't so bad, but as time went on it got really tired.
My vote for best X-Men story: Muir Island X-men vs the Reavers. When I first saw the cover for X-Men 254 it shattered my world. The outback era X-Men had just drifted apart or died, yet most of the characters were given a backdoor to return. That group of X-Men was my X-men and I couldn't accept that they were done with. Then when I see this new issue Forge is leading a group with Dr. McTaggart, Sunder, Amanda Sefton, Lorna Dane, Legion and Banshee on the cover. As much as I dreaded the issue, those 3 issues or so became my favorite Xstory ever. The potential of seeing an "all new all different" group unfold before my eyes had me thrilled beyond belief. Seeing them square off against the Reavers and then team with Freedom Force was wicked stuff. Unfortunately this group was just a red herring and before too long Jim Lee hit the book and developed the line-up that has endured until the last few years.
The wolvie vs Sabertooth battles... Collosus paralyzed, Nightcrawler near death in a coma, Shadowcat stuck in phase form. Angel gets harpooned through the wings... soo good.
I loved the whole Pheonix II Rachel Summers stuff a bit later. Wolverine was hunting her down.. so cruel.
Old school Wolverine rocked. Bring back the tan and brown wolvie!!!!
Two of my personal favorite x-men story lines were Nimrod vs. X-men and Juggernaut; and Nimrod vs. X-men and Hellfire club.
Two outstanding stories. But little compares to Days of Future Past and its impact upon X-men comics for the next twenty years.
I never got to read AoA in completion. Does anyone know if Marvel has made a bound reprint of this containing all the titles, like they've done for Death of Pheonix, Secret Wars, etc.?
I think AoA was the best ever. But that's only because it's still referred to more than other series. We see rabid Blink fans. Their incarnation of morph is around in Exiles (or a close enough to the AoA). Even their Sabertooth made it's way back to steal a scene or two. Additionally, the image of cyclops with one eye, still the coolest cyclops ever.
