Welcome one and all to the Guitar Wars. These battles feature songs nominated by you, the folks from the Realms. This isn’t about who the better guitarist is, or what band is better. This is about the instrument and the song. Great solos are something that make us sit up and take notice, but the guitar is more than that. There are great riffs like the one in Beat It, which was not done by Eddie Van Halen. You know, that awesome riff that permeates the song is also the part that EVH had nothing to do with.

There are ways that the guitarist wraps his playing around the melody and makes a perfect fit that’s so subtle and imperceptible that most times it gets missed. And of course, there are the solos, some with blinding speed and some played so eloquently and with so much feel that you can get lost in one sustained note after another.

You are hear! Hendrix, Clapton, Lifeson, Atkins, Page, Abasi, Santana, Morello and a host of others will be popping up. Come on in and check out the virtuosity of these and others. Find new songs you can add to your shuffle or just reminisce on songs you may not have heard in a while. Enjoy.

Listen to each song and pay attention to the guitar part and vote for the song whose guitar part you liked better. Maybe you’re a fan of the slide, or finger-picking or electric solo, but give each song a chance and then vote for the performance that you liked better. We’ll go round by round and match by match until we have a winner. That song will be crowned best overall guitar song to listen to on the Realms. All the songs will have the main guitarist or guitarists listed along with the band’s name and the name of the song. Critique it if you want, and judge it as you will, but keep in mind, this isn’t a battle of what band or artist is better. I for one may not be a fan of a certain band or solo artist, but that will not keep me from voting for a song of theirs if that song has one of the most gorgeous guitar solos ever heard.

My vote goes to the Scorpions. Dio has a very good voice. May he rest in peace in Heavy Metal Heaven.

ok lemme start by saying that jimi hendrix is one of my favorite guitarist and one of the best ever, now with that said he is also one of the clumsiest/slopiest guitarists ever. i have read where he would miss notes all the time and would hit the wrong note and then just try and bend it to where it should be. the man was amazing but so sloppy..

Now on the other hand Uli jon roth is one of the cleanest guitar players from his era, his guitar playing is almost always perfect. he is a machine of pure guitar power and amazing at what he does.

So with all that being said i bet you would think i am voting for uli jon roth, well you would be wrong. PEACE IN MISSISSIPPI/Jimi Hendrix gets my vote. the pure emotion that comes out of his guitar in this song makes it hard to deny, granted it is sloppy as hell it still makes me feel something more than the scorpions song(which i love). good job jimi.....

I really can't start with how wrong some of this is...

I vote for Uli Jon Roth. I think that his guitar skills outweighs Hendrix on these particular songs. If it were different songs I would change the vote.

Peace In Mississippi. While I recognize Roth's skill, The Scorpions still don't do it for me.

Sad to see that this is winding down. (Or is it?) I appreciate VG9's work in putting this Guitar Wars together.

Dio was never in the Scorps, but Klaus Meine is a tiny, leather lunged crooner with bushy hair so I can see how they could be confused.

Hendrix really isn't my bag. It's not something I would normally choose to listen to. Sails of Charon, while also not my normal style, is a good song that I've enjoyed listening to these six times. But it is time to man up and give credit where due. Roth certainly plays a mean guitar. Terrific, spot on, graet playing, but Hendrix, man, he could coax sounds out of that instrument that other quitarists could only dream of. Peace in Mississippi is a great work of art. Like Picasso, it may not be a piece of art that I personally care for, but I'll readily concede the artist's transcendant abilities. So yes, if this were Rock Wars, I'd be totally voting the other way, because I would listen to Sails of Charon over Peace in Mississippi nine times out of ten, but as it I vote for Hendrix here, because that's what this is about.
