Hello all and welcome to the Sealed Booster League!
For those of you who don't know, this thread is for a league here on hcrealms that's based on playing matches using sealed boosters.
We use the Play by Post forum here on the realms.
For any of you who aren't familiar with Play by Post here's a useful link. This particular link is for the fantasy league but it demonstrates Play by Post basics pretty well.
The League will consist of a series of sealed tournaments with a constructed tournament happening after every 3 sealed tournaments. Each sealed tournament will be with a different set, starting with Infinity Challenge.
Sealed Tournaments:
Sealed tournaments will generally be 3 boosters per person. Out of those 3 boosters people will construct 300 point teams. Sealed tournaments will be 3 rounds, with the two people with the best win records going on to a final match. Tiebreakers will be decided by points. The winner of each match is to be determined by KO Points. The final, however, is not based on cumulative points. The winner of the final wins the tournament.
The drafting will be conducted by the tournament organiser, using software (in this case Battle Planner). Given the nature of drafting software, the organiser will draft four boosters per player. Any Booster that contains doubles of a particular figure will be discarded from the set, otherwise the player will be assigned the contents of the first three boosters, and the fourth discarded. The organiser is empowered to draft additional boosters should more than one of the originals be invalid.
Constructed Tournaments:
Constructed tournaments will be held after every three sealed tournaments. Players may use any figures they have previously obtained. Teams for constructed matches will generally be 500 points. Constructed tournaments will also be 3 rounds and a final, just like sealed. Also, as in sealed, the final match is standalone. I.e. whoever wins the final wins the tournament.
In addition, just prior to each constructed tournament every player may choose 1 starter box, colossal figure, or collector's set from the available choices in the Prize Inventory. There will be a limited number of most starters or sets available, however, so to get what they want players will have to stay vigilant. In addition, each time a player must choose a starter or set that they do not yet have.
Match Rules and Set Up
Games in the Sealed Booster League will follow the standard Heroclix rules, with the following stipulations:
Set up:
Opponents will roll off for initiative. The order for initiative will be:
Players can bring their choice of any light or heavy objects (but can only use special objects that they have drawn from their boosters).
Map Choices:
The primary source of maps is Peers Heroclix Utility (see links below). Players may use maps from other sources as well, providing both players have access to and can use said maps.
Rolling:
In a perfect world everyone would be honest about their rolls, but since we are competing against each other, we will use die rollers. You can look at the helpful links below to find some.
Length:
Sealed Tournament Matches:
Sealed matches will generally last 15 rounds or 3 weeks, whichever comes first.
Constructed Matches:
Constructed Matches will generally last 15 rounds or 3 weeks, whichever comes first.
Fellowship:
Clix should be a fun game to play. One where we enjoy each other's company. As a result, we will have a fellowship prize every tournament. After each tournament Players will PM their votes to the Fellowship Coordinator. After someone wins fellowship, they will not be eligible to win again until 3 tournaments have passed. Fellowship votes for any given tournament will generally be due by the end of the final match.
Prizes
Prizes will naturally be awarded for all tournaments. Prizes will generally be LEs and other figures that can not be pulled in boosters. As a warning though, know that LEs will be rare. There will only ever be one copy of a particular LE in the league ever! Players will generally get their choice of LEs, providing no one else has picked that particular LE already.
Sealed Prizes:
5 LEs from the appropriate set will be given out in the following order.
1. Tournament Winner
2. Fellowship Winner
3. Runner Up
4. Tournament Winner
5. Last place (but not if the person was obviously trying to lose)
In addition, the top point scorer who does not make the finals will get an additional booster as a bonus.
Constructed Prizes:
LEs from the last 3 sets will be given out; along with other figures from starters and collectors sets. Wait and see what will be offered :-)
Trades
As there will be constructed tournaments, trading figures between players is highly encouraged! Just PM the trading coordinator and tell him of your trade and he'll pass the word on to me.
In addition to trades between players, in order to keep things competitive, there are two other ways to trade in figures.
1. Upgrading: If you can come up with 3 identical figures of the same rank (rookie and exp only) you can trade them in for one copy of the next rank up. (example: 3 rookie firelords could be traded in for one exp firelord. similarly, 3 exp firelords can be traded for one vet firelord)
2. You can also trade in any 10 figures (regardless of rank) from the same set in exchange for another booster from that set. You can trade in for as many Booster as you desire as long as you have enough figures.
For either of these options, once again just PM the trading coordinator.
Gaining and Losing Players
New players are always welcome and can join at the end of any tournament. New players will not get any older boosters, but will be on equal footing in sealed tournaments once they join.
If a player has to drop out their figures will be set aside in the hopes that they can return someday. They will not, however, get boosters for any tournaments they miss.
In order for a player to keep their boosters from a set they must complete at least one match of a sealed tournament themselves.
Here are some links and important people to help you guys out :-)
The most useful tool for Play by Post, including maps, dice roller and LOS tools, was generously developed by our own Peers and is located at the following link:
These are just a few tips that I'd like players to follow.
1. Before matches send a test die roll to your opponent to make sure it'll work.
2. When doing your recaps please include things like stealth in the recap. It makes it much easier on everyone.
3. If you have a character with a power that can be used on your opponent's turn, please be specific about how you would like it used. PC is the most obvious example so please state something like "I will PC the first attack that I have line of sight to that needs a 6 or better to hit."
If you do not specify, the assumption will be that you will PC the first successfull attack that you can.
4. When choosing starters and collector's sets, determination will be on a first come first served basis. Choices should be PMed to rouge2 and the earlier players do so, the better their chances of getting the set they want.
