Kyle Rayner watched as the rest of the Justice League went into the Fortress of Solitude.
It’s okay. You really can do this. You weren’t just projecting confidence for their sake…
He walked down the massive stairs and looked out over the field of ice. With his power ring shielding him from the cold, he could admire just how beautiful the arctic landscape was. The sun crested over the mountains, golden light turning the frozen sweeps of snow into a vast range of diamonds glittering brightly in every color. He smiled to see it, gusts of wind catching the loose snow and making it dance like a private moment between him and the world.
It’s okay. You really can do this. And this time he felt more certain.
Ahead and beyond he could see ships flying in. With only the slightest thought, his mask elongated and sharpened his vision, allowing him to examine the distant jets more easily. United States Air Force; his own country doing the best it could to prevent a terrible situation. Or, depending on your prerogative, President Luthor capitalizing on an excuse to send armed forces against the Justice League in a final effort to piss on the legacy of Superman for all the world to see. Kyle didn’t know where he fell on that line – he knew it was all more complicated than that.
Just like now. He was the only thing standing between these soldiers and his friends’ ability to prevent the Cyborg winning and destroying everything. But it was all more complicated than any of the players wanted it to be. In better times, under better circumstances, they would all be working together on the same side. But that wasn’t how this was going to play; it never went that easy.
He found that he was tired. Tired of the complications and the gray, tired of having to fight people who ought to be allies, tired of the war never being over and the earth always finding a way to slip back into peril. It felt like superheroics had essentially put him on a hamster-wheel, always running faster and faster but never making any progress. He looked down at his ring and sighed. Was this how the last Green Lantern felt? He’d only met Hal Jordan once, and then very briefly. He only really knew him through Green Arrow’s stories, but he thought he caught a vague sense of weariness.
Or maybe this is just how they all feel. You do this long enough and you’ll find out the work is never finished. What else could you feel but exhaustion? God, I wonder how Superman felt.
He rose off the ground in flight and lifted his fist. He could feel the power reacting to his will more easily than ever before. A dam had broken and whatever it was, the ring was responding to him like it never had. He saw Alex in his mind, her red hair in the breeze, and his calm center was there. From it, a nearly endless amount of power seemed to flow. He sent a beam out and sailing toward the arriving jets.
With luck, he could end this without hurting anybody. They weren’t really his enemy – it was all more complicated than that.

Thomas Blake rode in the transport jet, checking his harness for the thousandth time. He wasn’t comfortable in the military-grade gear they had loaded him up with. They’d tried to tailor his loadout with equipment more up his alley, and the knuckle-claws were a nice touch, but still… it wasn’t comfortable.
It didn’t help that he was here under duress. Oh, they’d given him a choice. Sign your life away to this black-ops unit and work for the government, or rot in a dank cell for the rest of your days. Not much of a choice, really. He wasn’t stupid – he knew how this was probably going to end. But as the rear hatch of the jet opened and everyone began standing for the air-drop, he saw the bright skies of the sunny day, the white plains of the arctic, and he knew why he’d agreed.
He was outside again. It wasn’t the savannah, but it was a wild, untamed place. Despite the knowledge that he’d die if he disobeyed his handlers, that he’d probably die even if he DID obey, despite the heavy military harness and uncomfortable jumpsuit in the arctic camo scheme… despite it all, he saw the sky and the sun and felt the wind whipping his face and he felt free.
The mountain of muscle ahead of him had a look on his face that Tom didn’t like. Being this close, he could see that the man’s jumpsuit was hiding some kind of mechanical undersuit. Tubes connected to the back of his neck in a way that made Tom shiver a bit. As if he could feel the eyes on his back, the man turned around. As intimidating as he was physically, when those eyes locked onto him it was even worse. Tom had run with a pride of lions in Africa. He had fought of a pack of jackals bare-handed. He had faced Batman on the rooftops of Gotham. But this man’s eyes sent a chill up his back. He’d learned to trust those instincts when out with the animals. They were usually right.
A sudden flash caught his eye and he looked out the hatch to see a giant green latticework structure forming around one of the other transports. It was transluscent energy at first, but solidified and seemed to gain weight. Cables and hooks launched from beneath to catch on the mountains below and drag it down where it landed in a net made of the same energy. As this was happening, the other transport was swallowed by an enormous whale that slammed into the mountain and dissolved into a cage that locked the ship down on the ground.
“Green Lantern is still in play,” the soldier at the front of the line said. “We jump now or we don’t get the chance.”
Tom checked his harness again. He supposed now was as good a time as any to find out if these jump-packs would actually work like they were supposed to.

Captain Atom watched as his reinforcements dropped from the only remaining transport jet, their jump-packs slowing and directing their descent to arrive at his position. As the last were coming out, an army of energy constructs shaped like angels caught the jet and forced it down. Green Lantern was soft-balling them, using non-lethal attacks. That would make him vulnerable, but only if they were willing to fight to kill. He grit his teeth, feeling the liquid metal that formed them and every part of his body grind together. He hated being put in this position. Why in the hell couldn’t the League have just stood down? Why were they fighting him?
He watched the criminals in military uniforms rushing toward him, saw Deadshot checking his pistols as he came back from the other direction, and he wondered what he’d have done in the same situation.
No, he thought. I’d have seen the soldiers, seen their flag, and I’d have stopped fighting and listened. I’m in the right here, I have to remember that. They’ll understand when it’s over and the work is done.
“Reporting for duty, sir,” the lead soldier said, doing a fast field-salute as he took up position in front of the Captain. “Looks like we’re the only ones who could make it to the party.”
“It’ll be enough,” he nodded. He almost added ‘it’s going to have to be,’ but decided it didn’t need saying. “Alright, men—“
“And women,” Killer Frost cut him off with a smirk. None of the villains wore their costumes, but her skin was pale as death, her hair shades of frosted blue, her eyes like ice, and a thin layer of frost hung on her gear. It wasn’t hard to put two and two together.
“I’m your commanding officer,” he continued, ignoring her. “That means if you hear my voice on your comm., you do what I say. Do it quick and you might get out of this alive. Do it slow, and—“
“Those League chumps ain’t gonna kill anybody,” Frost shrugged with a pssh.
He stormed up to her, standing a full head taller than the petite woman. “You listen and you listen good – I don’t give a good god-damn who you are. You answer to me, now. Your asses are my property and I decide how to use you or not. Make no mistake, I know who you were before you landed here today. As far as I’m concerned, if you die out there it’d be justice. I almost hope you get yourselves killed disobeying orders and acting like the lunatics you are just so you aren’t my problem anymore.
“But there’s a superweapon in that fortress that you can be damned sure will kill each and every one of you if it is successfully activated. Me? I’m made out of quantum energy. Near as anyone can tell, I’m immortal. So we work together and save a lot of lives, yours included, or you go off on your own looking for an angle you can play and get everybody here killed. Either way, I walk away alive and fine.
“Are there any more comments from the gallery?”
She looked like she really wanted to get in another dig, but finally shrugged. “Nope.”
He leaned down and glared into her eyes, letting some energy leak from his to burn the frost off her cheeks. “No. Sir.”
“Captain! Bogies incoming!”
He turned around and saw the unimaginable storming them across the field. It was like a child’s toybox had been overturned and brought to life – giant robots, army men, fantasy creatures, all made of green energy.
“Alright, squad – we’re up against a Green Lantern,” the Captain shouted. “I don’t know if any of you’ve had experience with a Lantern, but the short version is this – no matter what you see out there, it isn’t real. That means one simple thing: If it’s green, eliminate with extreme prejudice.”
“Now that is an order I can get with,” Killer Frost smiled. Captain Atom took flight, his fists radiating burning red light. Time to see what these people could do…
