This was when Willingham took over after Johns? I stopped paying attention around that point.
I know I'm in the minority here, but I think Johns is a hack. I did enjoy his JSA stuff, but the whole "War of Light" thing was just a Hostess snack ad gone out of control.
"The Guardians kicked me out of the Green Lantern Corps, but I'll start my own team! The Sinestro Corps!"
"Hey, great idea! I'll start a team, too! The Red Lantern Corps!"
"Here, boys; maybe these will take your minds off such nefarious doings!"
"HOSTESS® FRUIT PIES!! WITH LIGHT FLAKY CRUST AND REAL FRUIT FILLING!!"

I love those Hostess ads mister. The CPT Marvel vs Nitro, the SHAZAM vs the evil TV host, the Joker giving up to regular police...all solved by the simple application of Hostess Twinkies or Fruit Pies.

While Johns isn't a perfect writer, his work on the JSA was my gateway into the team, and I liked how he called upon things from the team's past that I had no idea connected to other parts of the DCU. I recall reading Willingham and Sturges up to the split, and Bad Seed was that storyline. I honestly can't recall who the mystery person was. I just remember after that there was a time travel storyline per se. I dropped it around there.

Yes, I thought that army of loser villains was, well, lame. I read comics consistently for 30 years before I finally quit buying new comics altogether, and there were maybe four villains in that group that I recognized.
The sad part is that JSA got really good again (the Monument Point stories) six months or so before the reboot. But loads of readers had bailed by that point and missed it.
(And it's not just because I'm from Maryland and Monument Point was soooooo obviously supposed to be Baltimore, either.)
(And whoever said "Johnny Sorrow" earlier was correct. I'd forgotten, which is why I didn't answer, but now that somebody said it, I remember it. And how bad it was. )

Ooooookaaaaay......so where did Johnny Sorrow get all that money to put those bounties on the JSA's heads? (Or did he just never intend to pay what he had promised?)

That part never really came up. It was a really lame story all around, probably the worst thing Willingham's ever written. The story continued when they split the book into JSA and JSA All-Stars. All-Stars continued it, and it was even lamer.

When it comes to Superman and Batman, Grant Morrison is nothing but a 50's cover band in a 70's psychedelic funk style.
